I like it because I actually talk to real people, and have friends. Friends with varying interests and skills that don't spend all day in front of a computer. So I can easily create shared folders with them and there is 0% hassle.

I guess since most people on 4chan, and ALL people on /g/ don't have any IRL friends, they could use something else, that is unnecessarily harder than it needs to be

used it for school when doing big projects (big is relative when in school) which eased up the proces a great deal.
also use it for collaboration when doing private projects.
and "off site" backup. As in, all the documents i have on my laptop i lug around for work and school, i compress them in winrar, encrypt and password protect the file which i then store in dropbox each month.

also pretty handy to have on my phone as well. take notes in a txt file stored in dropbox while doing interviews, which i can then continue on afterwards on my laptop or desktop.

Obviously it's not nearly as fast initially, but it's a relatively easy affair to set up a plain text web page to host your files on that can be accessed from any device with a browser.
Seeing as it would be for personal use, you could probably get away with hosting it on something as powerful ad a 6 or 7 year old laptop.

I like Dropbox a lot. It makes file sync exceedingly easy, which is something /g/ hates. The more obscure and hipster a program or solution is, the more they like it. Anything that dumbs down a difficult process or makes it more accessible to new computer users is anathema to them.

Data should hardly be the least of your worries if your house is leveled. All of your important documents should be somewhere. Those documents detail everything about you as a functioning member of the first world: Your social security info, insurance documents, deeds, wills, etc...

You should have really critical stuff held somewhere else, but don't claim for a second that data doesn't matter after a disaster. You're not 11 years old and you're not a black person living in a third-world country. Data matters. It's the only thing keeping you from being homeless.

One of the great things about dropbox is it's shadow copy ability ("previous versions"). each time you modify a file, dropbox keeps track of that and retains each version of the file. This can be extremely useful if you occasionally need to check old copies of your files, but don't want to bother with archiving multiple versions of it, or for situations where you accidentally overwrite a file, and need to pull an old version.

Question: Wouldn't having your files auto-encrypt themselves, make them useless if you had a shared dropbox account. Because the other people wouldn't be able to open them.

I'd rather just do manual encrypting of the 50 or so archives of stuff that actually needs to be secure, encrypting the whole drive has so many downsides

Anyone implying a service provider like Dropbox would be more reliable than your own servers (at home or otherwise) has obviously not been keeping up with the news for the last year.

Amazon, one of the biggest names in cloud services, has had numerous problems, including permanent data loss. It isn't natural disasters or theft they really have to worry about, though, it's generally human (admin) error.

yeah, but I'd still have all that data on my computer and every other computer I'm logged in to with that dropbox account. When they set up new servers my data will be resynced. Or if they can't afford to set up new servers and the go out of bidness, I can move over to a dropbox alternative. My data was never out of my reach the entire time.

However if my house catches on fire and my home made back up server dies, then I'm fucked. Or if a fucking hard drive dies (I know, completely unlikely being that it's based on movable parts). Then I'm fucked. Or if I spend a fuck load of time and money buying matching hard drives and setting up a fucking raid set up.

just. just fuck all of that. it takes 4 seconds to sign up for dropbox and then you just copy and paste your shit into a folder. fucking done. easy. you guys can't beat dropbox. And if you think putting your shit in a bank deposit box is any less likely for the govn't to access it than on a company server you're retarded

You'll see this warning when you do it, but frivolous reports will get you banned. It's not like some automatic voting system where enough bitching will accomplish anything.

But go for it if you want. Look at everything /g/ flocks to and everything /g/ criticizes (both on the software and hardware side). I'd say about half the time people on /g/ can come up with a legitimate-sounding excuse for their niche preferences, but the other half it's clear that they're just choosing whatever's obscure.

/g/ is full of tech hipsters.

    >yeah, but I'd still have all that data on my computer
What's the point of cloud hosting if you have a local copy of what you want to host?

You (or some idiot) said that data isn't a big concern for you. Evidently it is.

Dropbox is a great place to store files that are important to you - such as deeds, wills, etc... - but not necessarily important enough to store in a lockbox at the bank. Especially stuff that much change fairly regularly.

This includes things like doctor contact information, prescription info, emergency contact sheets, etc... And even things for classes like research papers, essays, etc...

These things are important to you, but not necessarily legal documents, and they change frequently so it wouldn't logistically work to go and swap out an update every other day at the bank.

If not being retarded is hipster, then I'll happily accept the label.

I'm not trying to convince you.
By all means, continue being retarded.
