The problem with Shittyrail is that the railway tracks in Australia are built on steep gradients and are fairly curved.

The Countrylink XPT is based on the BR 125 however they had to modify it significantly. Apparently if they'd just dumped a BR 125 on the tracks here, it wouldn't go up the first hill it reached.

Daily train commuter reporting in. Sure, it does have it's drawbacks - but it's cheap and effective, I can read a book / play vidya while on the train, and the daily route from home to the station and from the station to my lab gives me a 5.3km walk, which is neat for health reasons.

This is one of the things I will never understand. In my city, you can reach almost everything faster by train than by car. Even if you're faster by car, you still have to find a parking lot, probably far away from where you wanted to go, and probably pay for it. Yet people always prefer car over public transport. Wtf?
My opinion in rail based transport vs. car
    # Faster
    # No parking lot needed. When you go home, just get into the next train station, not walk miles to your car
    # You can do stuff while being transported, e.g. preparing lectures in uni
    # You meet lots of friends and new people on the train
    # You can get drunk
    # It's way cheaper
    # No need to repair something or worry about something getting broken
    # OIl price? IDGAF, trains here run by electricity

I am 24, have my driving license since I am 20, have lots of money, yet I don't own a car because it is pointless.

Because most cities in the US don't use rail for mass transport, outside of the large ones.

We were going to get a 2 billion dollar mandate here in Florida to build a high speed rail line through the state, but our asshat governor didn't take it for whatever reason. Not like anybody would use it everyday, since it would just go to other cities. And Tallahassee is too small of a town to warrant a train system within it. It takes maybe 20 or 30 minutes to drive from one end of town to the other, depending on how fast you drive and how many green lights you get, so there's really no need.

    Yeah.

I don't want to offend you if you actually like it, though, but shit man.

This reminds me of an episode of Thomas the Tank Engine, where one train almost falls off the rails and the other train has to pull him back up.

I live in the countryside so I usually walk, bike or take a bus to get anywhere. For longer distances, I take the 1-hour bus ride to the nearest railway station and then go by train from there.

Honestly if I lived in an area of the world where I had access to a half-decent rail system I'd fuckin' use it. The gas prices are absurd right now and getting worse, but I'm sure you faggots will try to justify it, just like Mac users justify spending twice the price on hardware because the OS is only $30.
