I'll tell you why Reddit inherently fails to provide good content.

You see, Reddit users are either new to the scene, or have been with the whole crowd since Digg 1.0.
Digg "died" due to "Power Users" exploiting the system by reposting content and consequentially sapping any originality and "good" that Digg was supposed to provide.
When Digg updated their site, a large percentage of the users migrated onto different sites. Unfortunately the "power users" followed them, being the scum of the Earth that they are.

Without knowing it, Reddit is following the trend that Digg did, with shit content and reposts now ruling the front pages. "Karma" is exactly the concept that makes Reddit and other similar sites such a breeding ground for fa­ggotry, as these so-called "power users", trying their hardest to reap the most Karma, without caring about the actual content that they supply. As a result, there is a continuous stream of "This is my girlfriend with x", and "I just adopted -insert cute animal here-" shitposting that is posted for the sole purpose of Karma whoring.
This is known and accepted by the community that used to use Digg and co, but is ignored by the new users and idiots that upvote everything like the good little karma drones that they are.

The only reason I stay on 4chan is because it's the only good board that has this anonymous kind of posting. Youtube commenting actually isn't bad either, because you're anonymous in the massive sea of it's users.

It's great once you have your preferred subreddits. It seems awful at first, but, I suppose, so does 4chan.

The API is really nice. I keep a subreddit and have it act as a pool for a URL catching bot for my IRC channel. You can just give it a quick overview and see all the links you missed, or do a quick search if you saw one posted earlier and need to find it again.

I come here to do all the talking though. I don't really like to talk on Reddit. I just read the links.
