So since all the filehosts are going down I decided to try using newsgroups since so many people here recommend it. I guess I need help or something since it doesn't seem all it's cracked up to be. You guys said you can find anything in any format. I've used the top search engines/indexes I've found out about through googling around but it's really hard to find what I'm looking for. Black Books, 15 Storeys High, and The Conformist are all easy to find on torrents or rapidshare but I can't find them for usenet (except DVD isos in some cases which I don't want). Also had a hard time finding the Terry Pratchett movie The Colour of Magic and when I did the rar was password protected with a readme linking to a webpage that doesn't work.

Can anyone explain to me how to unlock the magical powers of usenet?

You got trolled. Usenet is pretty much shit, you have to pay to pirate, and programs on Usenet area always full of viruses.

In general, XDCC, DDL and/or torrents will always beat Usenet by quite some margin.

    >>22822503

I was thinking exactly like this guy till I started using usenet. Its insane. Speed is excellent and you can use grabit till you find something that isn't shit. SSL is a big plus. RAR archives and split files are annoying though.

    >Speed is excellent
DDL and XDCC speeds are crazy as well, plus you get more content to boot.

Torrent content is the widest by a huge margin, but the speed can be dubious at times.

Well seeded torrents give me speeds of about 12.5 MB/s

I'm using grabit to download. Problem is I can't find good files. Also seems like the majority of non HD movies are in 2cd format for some reason. Didn't think people still did that.

    Usenet is alright.
I mean you get blazing speeds and all that good.
No community though and there's a fuck ton of spam and virus'.
The layout is horrible yes I know it doesn't matter.
You don't care about that shit you just want your files.
    I like torrents personally.
    Why?
Most of the shit I get from torrents is stuff that needs to be organised, you don't get that on usenet.
On trackers I'm guaranteed quality, usenet not so much.
I've also found content that I can't find on usenet on torrents.

Anyways, I like torrents and am going to stay with them.
Usenet is great and all but it's just not for me.
Go ahead, try it out if you want. It's great if you want something that wouldn't be seeded well on torrents really fast.

I was checking out my options ever since MU went down too. Usenet sounds meh. Tried looking at paying for rapidshare again (tried it a few years ago) but man is it expensive these days ($16 a month) and it's "out of stock" anyway, whatever that means. What's my best option? Paying for a vpn so I can torrent? (Comcast threatened to cut my connection last time they caught men they're the only isp around here)

first off usenet has been around sense pre internet days, and yes it can be daunting, but some of the great ways to find files are things like merlins portal, nzb matrix , newzbin , etc, alot of the time its hard to find old stuff, and mostly all 0day go through usenet first,so if your looking for that its great, but the community so is awesome just ask for old shit, secondly do watch the fuck out for virus' from douchey dicks and bots i assume and enjoy your blazing fast encrypted dl's

    Internode.on.net have a nntp-caching setup.
If the company I work at where to ask Astra for a feed, they'd be all Jewish on us ($1800/year?), which they did when I originally set up the newsserver here ('hey, the precedent for the past 25 years has been to pass it around for free between peer servers.. uunet certainly had no problems with it..) Nuh, Astra did a cease-and-desist on us, and Internode didn't have the balls to side with establish Internet practice. So instead, I made the leeching and posting invisible to Astra by changing the Path: header around a little. 7 years later, still doing it.
    You could do it too.

Usenet has a bit of a steep learning curve, but once you get the hang of it and understand what to look for and what NOT to look for, it's actually very transparent.

I've been paying for PowerUsenet for about 5 years now, and I've also been paying for the best Usenet client - Usenet Explorer, which as a paid search service run by the developer which is every bit as fantastic as it sounds.

Sure binsearch.net and the other search sites are adequate, but the fine granular control offered by a built in search engine is extremely powerful.

For "new" people I'd suggest SABnzbd+ & binsearch or some other nzb indexing site. Sorting through headers is not for the faint of heart.

How you can possibly say a paid usenet client is the best, and mention SABnzbd+ in the same post, is beyond me. No paid client is the best, and SABnzbd+ is the best free client, ergo SABnzbd+ is the best client.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here.
DDL/XDCC speeds are assey unless you pay up, most of the sites ive seen limit free user speeds.
XDCC last time I used had better speeds then DDL, but then you gotta wait in a que and almost never as fast as usenet.

    >Well seeded torrents give me speeds of about 12.5 MB/s
That's nice, all content on usenet is always at max speed.

The pitfall to usenet is retention, torrents pitfall is the swarm size. Works great for popular stuff, not so much for everything else, and lets face it there is a large portion of users who are nothing but a drain on the swarm.

    >No community though and there's a fuck ton of spam and virus'.
There are communities, generally paid (some have $XX for YYY days, others are $10 for 10 years sub) and they vet the files, post comments about it. If you are using a search engine primarily to find your content you are doing it wrong. seriously wrong. Or learn to filter by size properly.

Porn is probably the worst on usenet, nzbxxxmatrix is whatever is tryying to change that.
so much shit, repeating content, and viruses. or passworded archives.
Searching vague terms yeilds the worst results, like "asian teen" might give you the same 15 videos, with 200 results.
But if you know some specific title or actress you can get some ok stuff, no previews for any of it.

I signed upto astraweb last night, just to try it out.
First feeling what is this bullshit, fuck this.
    30 minutes later, pic related.

70GB of entire X-files in about 3 hours. Loads more 720p shows and 1080p movies going too. I doubt I will ever use anything else again.

sickbeard basically is like a PVR for your computer.

tell what shows to grab, the format to grab it in (SD/HD/whatever)
it does the rest, grabbing the shows, organizing. good shit.

    >22823459
    You need
    1) a provider which grants you access to the servers, there are many try out a trial first.
    2) a client that lets you download things from usenet
3)knowledge where to find .nzb files (they are like.torrent files) check out nzbmatrix (they have an option for free users)

    that should get you started

    fuck that sounds massively complicated
    >> Anonymous 02/10/12(Fri)09:40 No.22823526
This is all you need for the best usenet experience ever.
    - A provider (i use astraweb)
    - Sabnzbd (client, web based)
    - SickBeard (for downloading and organizing tv shows)
    - CouchPotato (for downloading and organizing movies)
    - NzbMatrix VIP account
    - Sabnzbd firefox extensions
    - QuickPar (to repair blocks)
    - Lots of hard drive space

That's it. Configure those things well and you'll see why usenet is awesome. Yes, it can take time to set it how you want it, but once everything's done, you'll be glad you did it.

    >> Anonymous 02/10/12(Fri)09:42 No.22823558
    >>22823515
    Its not.

You basically sign up at a provider - they give you a user name and password and their server.

You get a client, much like say utorrent. but you put in the server, your user name, password.

Then you find and download nzbs from search engines - much like the pirate bay. Think of it like that, but when you download it lightening fast.

Grabit is a combination of client + 'community'
The upkeep of the database costs monies.
And when compared to nzbmatrix's cost of $10 for 10 years, $25/yearly on grabit seems like a bad deal.
meanwhile sab is just an open source client that is free.

-the more a provider is resold, the more likely things are to be removed for DMCA reasons. Giganews and Highwinds resell the fuck out of their usenet so some things do get removed. Giganews commonly has failures downloading HBO shows for this reason.
-completion can be an issue. towards the end of retention, highwinds tends to have issues.
