Are touch screens really the future of computers? Do you think they're just a gimmick?
    >> Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ Apprentice Sysadmin of !GEnsOKyOwY 02/01/12(Wed)14:35 No.22636480
both - they're used as gimmick and they are becoming more prevalent in useful, beneficial places.
    >> Anonymous 02/01/12(Wed)14:35 No.22636482
its part of the future. it will co-exist with other input devices, not replace them.
    >> Anonymous 02/01/12(Wed)14:36 No.22636485
    both
    >> Anonymous 02/01/12(Wed)14:37 No.22636514
Good for some places - eg. in a tourist's office as shown, or on purchase terminals, etc.
Bad for - Everything desktop related
    >> Anonymous 02/01/12(Wed)14:37 No.22636519
I bought a touchscreen computer before they were cool.
    >> Anonymous 02/01/12(Wed)14:38 No.22636526
I think they are just a gimmick.
But then I also thought 3D was just a gimmick.

What I hate most about touch screens is the fingerprints.
That and a mouse is actually way more comfortable to use for long periods.

I wont have a problem if they use this, but as of now I'd rather have a trusty rubber dome keyboard.

As long as your average human hand keeps oozing oily fluids the touchscreen will remain a gimmick except in very specific applications. (see smartphones and tales)

Anyone else here hate touchscreen gestures like "pinch to zoom" and "flick to turn page"?

I just find those movement extremely.....gay.

Industrial resistive touchscreens are designed to be used when you're wearing gloves, so that's not an issue. Kiosk computers and public terminals get cleaned regularly. Those are both legitimate uses for them. Touchscreens for portable devices serve a purpose, and on home computers, they are utterly retarded.

No, I don't know what you mean, if anything the gestures are more similar to gestures performed on a female during sex than a male.

    That's not the point.

    They are just feminine somehow.
Just like checking your nails by stretching your fingers (as opposed to turning your hand and bending your fingers) is feminine.
It has nothing to do with sex, just moving in a feminine/gay way vs. in a manly way.

Surely I'm not the only one here who noticed?

Yeah, I still think it's a gimmick but it sticks around much longer than I thought it would.
Only been to 1 3D movie myself (Avatar) and I hated it.
Really don't see the point of it all, but apparently companies are making money.

It's because today managers and company leaders are being retarded
We're at crossroads now. People are easier to manipulate and it's getting even more easier. The thing is that rich don't want to wait, they want a braindead population following their every whim. Thus we see stupid gimmicks being dragged on for so long. But people still aren't enough stupid to make it a standard, only to make enough revenue for it to continue (unfortunately)

Yes, and that's why I think touchscreen desktops might have a chance.

If Apple makes one we're doomed.

And there is already a touch keyboard.

I believe even if it becomes the new gay (or whatever hype you want to compare it to) I think real holograms and good tech will only take 20 more years to come, so I think I'll manage until then this way

    >> Anonymous 02/01/12(Wed)15:34 No.22637540
    both.

in a lot of low input applications they make sense. for home PCs, they are of questionable value.

I think you will see touch being used a lot more in computing over the next decade, and maybe not just in the tablet type interface.

My 2 year old niece already thinks TV's have touch screens because she gets to play with mommy's iPhone.

People getting born today will probably never learn to use a keyboard and mouse.
