    Hey.

On the night of dec 26th (I think), I got infected with a adware virus. It was the uusal "WARNING [[Insert offical sounding but fake microcosft security warning]] 29 INFECTIONS HAVE BEEN FOUND, CLEAN NOW!" bullshit.

I immeadtly flicked off my wireless card switch, and tried to run malbytes or whatever the fuck it's called. It wouldn't let me. However, on a whim, I tried something so stpudly simple, it worked: When the warning popped up again, I opened the task manger, and hit "end task on the warning.

By some miracle, it said "not responding", and the warning crashed, closed out, and vanished, along with some parts of the virus. It wasn't gone, of course, but it went into a coma of sorts for a period of time ( a few hours), before I had to repeat the process.

Now, somtime between then, and the 27, a few things occured:

    - I ran my lisecensed expired version of nod 32, it didn't find anything
    - I system restored to before I got the virus.

I don't recall which I did first, but whatever. Though I do recall the 27th was the date I did the system resotore on, and the 24th was the date I restored to.

For a while, I thought the problem was dealt with.

    To be cont next post.
    >> OP !!4ZqfJjI1FXd 12/31/11(Sat)18:26 No.21955084
I am no longer getting the adware, but a few strange things are occuring. For starters, there are "phantom" noises. Like the noise when you click something that brings you to a new pagel, or when an error shows up, etc. But nothing is making those noises.

The internet is sporadically slow and unresponisve, and the browser crashes occoniansly. But it's not common enough to be anything more than annoying.

However, I am also getting the occoisonal "IP/CP ping control(or maybe command?)" is unrespoive and must be closed" error message, or something like that. I had never seen it before, so I was supcious. Then, I somtimes got "Microsoft windows has disabled the following whatever for your security: IP/whatever the fuck it's called ". The latter error doesn't seem to show up as much. Skype is also crashing.

Now, also at times, the computer slows to a crawl, and everything; mouse movement, typeing, everything, SEVERLY lags. I recently noticed this occurs when on the task manager, I see "ping.exe" is showing in the proccess list, with it's mem usage being the highest, or near highest value. Addtionally, when this occurs, it says the cpu usage is a 100% on the task manager. Ending the ping.exe process removes the lag, and makes the cpu usage go back to normal levels, but this only, like the ending the task from above, postpones the issue.

What the fuck is going on/should I do?

This happened to me to on firstrowsports.tv on Windows 7 on a macbook pro. It seems like it's been a common virus recently. Just reformat your whole system not worth the time to try to remove it. I reinstalled Windows 7 on bootcamp.

    Yeah, no.

Even the fucking adware was only so annoying for me to warrent me dealing with it, this ping.exe shit isn't a big enough deal for me to do anything like that.

Unless it's doing something behind the secens that I am not aware of.

Last time I checked, help threads were never disallowed on /g/, only frowned upon.

If I must, I'll also start discussing my trip to the computer science history muesum.

    It was suprsingly nice.

Sadly, I was in a rush, so I didn't get to see everything.

It started with early slide scales (ruler like things), then abacuses, early mechanically computing devices, the Antikythera mechanism, abacuses, napier bones, Curta calculators etc.

It went over early punch card machines, etc.

Of course, it had many actual samples of these devices.

Then it went into actual "computers".
    >> OP !!4ZqfJjI1FXd 12/31/11(Sat)18:46 No.21955453
It had a real panel of the ENIAC, as well as 20 - 30 other early wartime computers.

This was the point where I started to get rushed.

I can't really recall much after that, save for it going over the utah teapot, and the video game section.

Because I am such a nice guy OP, I will help you. Do as this picture says but save it as ping.bat. Double click it and it should get rid of ping.exe and the adware file system32.

You need to understand that reinstalling Windows is not a "big deal." It's a very, very common way to deal with anviruses and malware in general, since even with the best software, you never know what could be left. That being said, I recommend you try Malwarebytes in safe mode without networking first.
    >> OP !!4ZqfJjI1FXd 12/31/11(Sat)19:12 No.21955882
    Sigh.

Is there ANYTHING I can do that would get you guys to tell me more about my issue/why a reformat is needed, or if it isn't, some actual help?

I didn't see this before my last post.

While I'm aware of this, I've had.. Some bad experiences when it comes to backup up and re-loading data.

My computer will litteraly stop copying files if a file name is too long, so when I back up my stuff, I litterally have to isolate, deselect, and restart the entire back up everytime that happens, which often takes more than 24 hours total to do.

That, and my game data often gets messed up upon putting everything back on a newly wiped hard drive.

Or am I not understanding what a reformat entails?

I'm good with software, not hardware or system/OS stuff.
    >> Anonymous 12/31/11(Sat)19:23 No.21956070
First, try TDSSKiller. This is a simple rootkit scanner/removal tool from Kaspersky. If it comes up with anything, remove & re-run it after the reboot. http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684

Second, run GMER. Do NOT attempt to restore anything if it shows up with anything, just post a screenshot. This is not your typical antivirus, it's a power-user tool. http://www.gmer.net/

Once you've done this and if both show up clean, you can move on to posting an Autoruns or HijackThis log.

Well, GMER is linked from the Kaspersky site and they're pretty well-known in the antivirus world. Use the link in the article I linked (it's near the bottom) if you don't trust.

    I will check.

Sorry for not trusting you after bitching for help the whole thread.

I suppose that's how asking for help always is here though: work through assholes and trolls, and trying to find a person who is really trying to help.
