i dunno about you, but when I went to drivers ed way back in high school(2003), they would not even teach manuals, they just taught autos. I asked the instructor about it, and he said that you can learn it on your own, and "its too complicated for most people." That left me going wat all the way home. I learn to drive on a manual, its not complicated, its just about practice. I think everyone should learn how to drive on a manual, because no heavy machinery is auto, and its a good learning experience, but driving schools today dont even teach manual.

I used to drive one of these in work and it was a three speed auto. I used to have to collect loads of cement in the bucket, so when I was racing down the yard in it with the bucket up high the back end got very light, so you'd throw the bucket down and jump on the brakes and the whole arse end of it would lift up of the ground and you performed the perfect endo. Me again. I don't have a preference for manual or auto. I can see the pros and cons of both. If I want to go out for a hoon, I'll go with an auto all day everyday. However, I test drove a BMW 335i auto and it was scary just how fast you went from 0 - silly speeds. The autobox was no slouch.

My next car? Probably going to be some old second hand japanese luxo barge like a Honda Legend or something. Electric and leather everything. And yes. An auto box, for wafting about not giving a fuck.

Sure I'd get better fuel and power efficiency, but it would still be shit so it's irrelevant.

Also more control is bullshit. My car is a large rear wheel drive with shitty traction in weather and I had no problem with an auto in heavy snow and ice. Unless you are racing, etc. you will not gain anything and are just being autistic and illogical.

In our cheap, small cars, the auto (CVT) is usually more efficient than the manual. The efficiency divide increases once one factors in how poorly many people shift their cars, especially cheap, dull ones.

I think most companies will be moving to paddle shifts and electronic automatic combo boxes or whatever the fuck they are. The shifting time is now near instantaneous and the efficiency is nowhere near as bad as old autos of early cars and particularly of 80s and early 90s cars. You still get the benefit of manual shifting but without the hassle of operating the clutch and shit yourself. I'm sure even the VW Golf comes with a paddle shift setup now. >I will never be purchasing a new car since it's the law that new cars have to have ABS, traction control and stability control.
Can't you disable that shit? Why wouldn't you want ABS? Can you pump your brake 140 times per second? Why would you do something like disable a convenience feature. Yeah it's bad if you have to rely on it, but why be so illogical? The stability control and traction control makes things worse though, especially in winter. I usually drive my mom's car because fuck gas prices and the traction control really sucks. It also doesn't have working ABS which is no big deal but it still sucks dick.

Remember when cars were cars and not computers on wheels?

Yep. While the reverse is now true, self-shiting transmissions used to reduce power output and cost fuel efficiency. Americans could accept that, but Europe, thanks to post-Marshall austerity, could not and with the culture it brought, still cannot accept using larger engines to compensate nor accept questionable fuel economy.

Suppose manuals just still sell their because they've such a tradition of driving them. Maybe Euro companies should sell models with a CVT and a big jelly dong mounted in the console that provides gearing suggestions.

ABS is bad because it makes people think they have magical breaks that can stop quicker.

If you can threshold brake you don't need abs.

ABS is damn handy to have, Besides theres a switch to turn it off, atleast there should be.

Traction control is anoying tho, I live in a pretty shithole place myself and whenevers snowing I need to improvise like you.

Driving manual has shown me how fucking retarded other drivers are. When I see a red light ahead I get out of gear and just let my car roll the rest of the way. I'm shocked how everyone else keeps accelerating towards the red light, or the one behind me quickly changes lanes to pass me. By the time I get to the light it turns green and I don't even have to brake.

What? The fluid coupling will always lose more energy than a clutch.

    Problem?

I personally find it sickening that now any rich boy can jump in a super car and the computers will work to keep him alive while he drives shit.

This is not related to the ongoing debate. You can do either with either transmission. I do the same thing in my automatic. I also engine break on hills by using the low gear selector, but it doesn't do much since the brake wear / carbon buildup is negligible.

You can't brake as fast as a computer though. The whole point of ABS is to slam on the anchors and let it do what you physically are incapable of doing. Unless you can catch and release the brakes hundreds of times a second....

If you want to threshold brake and toe heel and all your other "HURR AM ARTON SENNA I'M DEAD" race car driver, fuck off to a track.

ABS is okay, but i disable traction control, stability control, and ABS on all my vehicles(they can all be shut off thru the computer with a tuning unit). I dont like traction, since I know that some wheelspin is okay, but its up to the driver to moderate it(me). ABS is okay, but I am practiced at peak braking, and do not panic when in a potential crash situation, and stability managment is for chumps, i wanna slide my car, so fuck you.

peak braking takes practice, and if you are good at it, it stops quicker than ABS, especially in snow and ice...
