External hard drive or internal hard drive for storage?
    >> Anonymous 12/18/11(Sun)11:22 No.21700924
what do you want to do with it?

    >> Anonymous 12/18/11(Sun)11:23 No.21700938
Depends on what you're storing and the purpose for storing it is.

    External for backup.
    Internal for everything else.

    Or NAS for both.
    >> Anonymous 12/18/11(Sun)11:24 No.21700950
borrowing thread, does internal last longer than external?

    Why does it matter?

are you going to be moving files between machines
    >> Anonymous 12/18/11(Sun)11:24 No.21700959
Depends on your circumstances and needs.

Internal means the drives can stay cooler and therefore last longer. Most external drives don't have good, if any cooling and the drives get really hot really fast if you're pulling a lot of data from them.

But if you want to share it between more than one computer a NAS might be a good option for you if you have an old spare computer lying around that you could pop a few drives into.

I'd like to interject for a moment. What you are referring to as an external hard drive; is in fact, an internal hard drive with an outer casing, or as I've recently taken to calling it, internal HDD plus case. . .

Goddammit, the internal HDD community has never done anything for the external HDD community. Stop piggy-backing on our success, your backwards communist.

anyway i use an external OPEN caddy OP
    You should too
    I have no internal drives
I boot from an external eSATA drive
It's sat in an open caddy. You slot the drive in the top on it's end so it's exposed to the air if you see what i mean.
cooler than an internal and more convinient to move around
I have 3 machines and like 10 drives nearly full of OSes and shit
got sick of opening cases and wotnot
and get the ones with BLUE LEDS that light up round the base of the caddy, it make ur life better

I read that cool temperatures can still lead to premature hard drive deaths and that ~40c is a good temp. I don't know if it is exactly true but if anyone can explain a bit more by all means.

Exactly right, I go off that study you linked there. The optimum temperature for long hard drive life is between 35C and 40C. Most of my drives stay right between those numbers.

What do you mean by "broken"? There are many different things that could go wrong with an SSD.

Simply said, HDs have moving parts, an SSD doesn't.
Also, what a stupid definition of "reliability" you got there. Reliability should be the chances of not failing, not the chances of recovering something in case it fails.
