  • STOP SOPA BEFORE IT DESTROYS THE WEB

Well I have finally woken up to just how bad SOPA is.
It saddens me to know that I am seeing the end of internet freedom. Corporatocracy here we come.

Just use a free DNS server and you're fine.

    Plus it's unlikely to pass.

I think you really miss the point.
It's not so much my access to other sites. It's other's access to my sites. As well as the effect on invasion, creativity and general freedom.
We already have far too much censorship with Youtube taking videos down despite being covered by fair use.
You can't just tell everyone to use OpenDNS and expect the problem to go away.

Despite the fact that Congress was supposed to be out of session until the end of January, the Judiciary Committee has just announced plans to come back to continue the markup this coming Wednesday. This is rather unusual and totally unnecessary. But it shows just how desperate Hollywood is to pass this bill as quickly as possible, before the momentum of opposition builds up even further.

This isn't just about sharing music. It's about big business trying to control the web. They are getting the power to kill off anything they don't like. This makes the little man almost powerless to defend himself on what is the last corner of freedom.

All you seem to suggest is ways to get around the filter. You ignore the actual problem which is that they are censoring the internet.
Once a site is blocked it won't be profitable for them to run any more. So it won't even be worth changing DNS.
They are penalising legitimate businesses and law abiding citizens in their pursuit to stop crime.

No, it revokes the DNS entry and all the core DNS servers will be all "lolzonetransfer" and nobody in the world will be able to access the site. There was a proposed amendment that would ensure the sites are only down for US citizens, but it was rejected. >but when they get their own ICANN alternative formed...

Well that would certainly help, an alternative DNS root not controlled by the US.

If the US is gonna block by IP address not just DNS then I guess the rest of the world will just have to cope with out the US isolationists. Bad thing for the rest of the world?

File a dispute and get your site back or stop running a pirate site.

    The solutions are this:
    A) People get so angry and pissed off about the services they use that get cut off because of SOPA that they take action to reverse the bill
    B) All legitimate companies and websites that have a moral opposition to SOPA move all their servers out of the US and change to non US-Owned domains. The American eceonomy fails further so hard that they realise they miss money and realise the bill was stupid and drop it.

What I love about this bill is how fucking out of nowhere it came from.

For the past few years we have been dealing with the war issue as well as the fucking recession that is STILL fucking us over ..well I'm speaking as a US citizen.

Instead of dealing with that shit we get this fucking bill for no fucking reason...fuck.

As a US citizen on behalf of my family and I (I dont want to say everyone because everyone has their own opinion) I want to say right now that I am sorry my government is run by a bunch of autistic jackasses that are fucking up everything for everyone.

The EU is pretty sensible when it comes to these things. The Ukraine is impoverished and completely untrustworthy.
Switzerland is usually the best bet.

the US owns ICANN, which basically controls the Internet.
the US also owns the biggest banks in the world as well as ad services, which finances basically all big websites.
you could say that the US owns the Internet.

I can't help but feel bad for Ukraine. That place had the potential to be the greatest nation on Earth but the fucking commie red bastards fucked it over with forced famine and general abuse.

Google could do B all on their own with little effort. They already maintain a free DNS. They'd just have to move whatever files and machines they needed to their non-US installations and rent their use to a new non-US company they form. I hope they do that.

I would rather they didn't take it down in the first place.
If I run a site making £2,000 a day, this site then has content uploaded which is copyrighted and the internet police shut the site down for 60 days before I can get it back I would have lost £120,000. Even though I'm not American.
And don't act like they can't do it. They take down videos on Youtube without warning you.
