    Ivy Bridge is going to be a big leap forward in laptops;
    -Lower power consumption
    -Dem intel 4000 graphics.

As a side note, Apple laptops are only going to get more popular with the arrival of Ivy Bridge. I wonder how /g/ will respond.

A lot of things keeping people from buying Apple laptops is the fact that to buy one with a dedicated graphics card, you have to go for the 15" Pro, which is whatthefuck expensive.

If Intel make Intel 4000 graphics good enough (which it looks so), it will reduce the amount of people who actually desire a dedicated graphics card. So while people may not want to spend the whatthefuck amount on a 15" Pro, they might buy a baseline MBA or MBP instead.

Its only speculation, but I think its a likely situation. There are also rumours that Apple will get their hands on the processors first, and sell them before any other company does. Whether this is true or not, I don't know.

I still have a Core 2 Duo E6750 (2,6ghz stock), i simply overclocked it to 3,3ghz and the system still runs butter smooth, even recent games run fine at 1920x1080 on medium details.
Fact is, when Windows 8 will come out upgrading from an old pc will lose meaning if you aren't an hardcore gamer or a PI maniac, most PCs still run fine for standard stuff like browsing the web while doing 3-4 things in background.

The point is there no upgrade that give you a great performance increase. Also 1155 was dead from birth. If I want to I could upgrade an i7 970 for 500 bucks. That's basically the same a 980x minus the unlocked multiplier.
That cpu would blow any 1155 socket chip out of the water. 2011 socket has a limited range of cpus and is only targeted at the high end so it also is a real dead socket. The next major release for intel will be ivy bridge and this why people are saying to not upgrade yet.

Some /g/ users shit on people when they post builds with what those users consider to be expnsive motherboards.

Turns out decent mobos are pretty imperative if you want to OC. That isnt to say that you have to break the bank, but a "value" motherboard is generally less likely to get good OCs.

Yes, but it is a pretty stupid idea to buy a motherboard now because it has PCIe 30, because Sandy Bridge does not support it.
You HAVE to have an Ivy Bridge CPU in order to use the benefits of PCIe 3.0.

Anyway, most people should have known that Ivy Bridge would just be a die shrink and some minor improvements.

I predicted ~20% increase because of higher stock frequency, minor improvements here and there, lower leakage and so on.
But yeah, waiting for Ivy Bridge is stupid if you're planning on upgrading your computer.

The only real benefit is that the new transistors might increase overclocking capabilities (5GHz with hyper 212+?).
I don't think most people care about power consumption on desktops and the integrated graphics are basically only good for QuickSync.

I'm pretty sure the 3820 has a locked multiplier.

Sandy Bridge-E has PCI-E 3.0 as well....no USB 3.0 but who knows if that will even last when Intel will apparently be pushing Light Peak soon.

Well he stoped posting after people started to use them and he leaked out his trip.

Fun times, I sometimes miss him.

It does have some new bclk divider thing though that allows some overclocking if you have good ram that allows it.

d'aww, so the viper threads today are fake?

    That's a damn shame.

    This.

I get a lot of stutter in Skyrim with my e6750 and GTX460, but that could just be shitty coding by Bethesda. I also can't handle Dolphin at higher settings or bsnes (x64, 32 runs fine for whatever reason). When I'm playing back 10bit video mpchc is a little laggy sometimes, especially when changing to full screen or switching audio streams; I have actually had to kill the process several times lately.

His tripcode was ##hack or something so a lot of people impersonated him. He's like the marshviperX of 2011 /g/.

Oh I didn't know Sandy Bridge-E supported it but it seems like you're right.

    >Intel increased bandwidth on the other side of the chip as well. A single SNB-E CPU features 40 PCIe lanes that are compliant with rev 3.0 of the PCI Express Base Specification (aka PCIe 3.0). With no PCIe 3.0 GPUs available (yet) to test and validate the interface, Intel lists PCIe 3.0 support in the chip's datasheet but is publicly guaranteeing PCIe 2.0 speeds. Intel does add that some PCIe devices may be able to operate at Gen 3 speeds, but we'll have to wait and see once those devices hit the market.

Viper fucked up with posting and leaked his tripcode.

Fun times, i say past 2 months all viper threads are fake. But he was SO pissed when people used his trip.

I hope that brat pulled an hero.

Light Peak is so fucking worthless. They don't even call it Light Peak anymore, they removed the entire optical component and renamed it Thunderbolt. Disgrace of a project if you ask me. The entire allure was the huge speed increase of using fiber optic connects, instead they settled for "fast enough" and did everything over copper. What the fuck?

Hopefully we see it implemented on some stuff soon. It's superior to USB 3.0 and it can do more things. It might not be as good as it once was considered but it's pretty damn good.
