I derped really hard last night, and I felt the need to make a public service announcement, and also give everyone an opportunity to call me a retard.

Before you stop reading, I didn't fry my computer or anything like that. No, this is an altogether different class of retardery.

I am, like many of you, a naturally curious person. As a result, I like to take things apart, either to see how they work, or at least what's inside.

My mp3 player broke. I took it apart to see if there was anything in there I could use for projects. All I ended up taking was the battery and the casing.

The battery was a lithium ion rechargeable, about 3/4 the size of a credit card, and 3mm thick. It sat on my desk for a week before I realized that I wasn't going to do anything with it, and it was just more clutter.

So I decided to see what was inside.

It's actually pretty interesting. There's this long three-layer ribbon. It has a rubbery black layer, a plasticy white layer soaked in some foul-smelling greasy substance, and a layer with what I imagine to be the lithium on it. These layers are then folded over each other to make a square, and there's a contact on each end.

When I was done, I threw it in the trash. A few minutes later, I felt a disturbance in the force, but couldn't put my finger on it for a while. Then I noticed that my garbage can was on fire.

I was really lucky, cause I managed to smother it right away. The garbage can was full of paper, and I shudder to think what would have happened if anything had caught. I put the charred remains of the battery in a glass jar (no lid), and kept an eye on it for a few hours. It didn't catch again.

Woke up this morning with a sore throat, but no difficulty breathing.

Pic is the remains of the battery.

At least you didn't die from smoking a floppy disk.

OP I wish you'd died in that fire.

    >OP opened an Li ion battery
    >OP tossed it in the trash can
    >OP set fire to trash can
    >OP should have gone to local Occupy protest with flaming trash can

Did you at least save the flash chip from the MP3 player?

Sadly, my local Occupy has already been dismantled.

And I tried, but broke a few pins trying to desolder it.

What do you mean 'sadly'? Those things set socialism back 50 years.

Damn it OP. I was hoping you would try to take the fire out with water since that would only create more fuel for the fire (Lithium Oxide ftw).
