hey, in new zealand, we build wooden framed and steel framed houses, but we do it in a sturdy fashion and have little to worry about, as well as the fact wood is fast growing and cheap.

Its actually quite good because it breathes and keeps the houses at a good temperature with a better rate of heat each change than a brick or concrete house.

Still, I think i would not go to the US because of the lack of socialism and the extremely difficult immigration process, even as a white New Zealander of the middle class studying engineering.

I also enjoy my subsudized university and interest free loans. Oh yes, and paying 33% tax is ok with me. Shit, i really like having a pension for when I grow old, as well as an investment scheme for my old age, as well as being able to contribute 4% of my wage to it, use it to pay for my first house.

It has 40k in it right now, and by the time i finish uni in a few years, it should be about 70k. I really like that alot, because it means i can own a house earlier in life, and continue to make alot of money, which i can invest into a business.

I wouldn't go to a hospital ever again. Socialist medicine is much worse than none at all.

People will not demand or fund malpractice, and that is all that socialized medicine offers.

The equivalent of calling tech support instead of researching the problem yourself and seeing a specialist or logically resolving the issue as the situation warrants.

Socialized medicine is an obscene development. As you don't bother to realize government institutions are permanent things that cannot be changed without radical attack and defeat of the government itself. Something so open for corruption as medicine fortified by government...

It is far Beyond stupid. It is Intentionally sabotaging a nation at it's core.

haha it must be hard to live with that sort of paranoia

the australian government has given up lots of things it once controlled
it used to own qantas, basically a monopoly on the air travel industry
they sold it in 1992 and haven't looked back
same with Commonwealth Bank (the biggest bank in the country)

if the poeple or (in those cases, sensible economists) want change, the government changes
    thats democracy

also Australia has private hospitals and private health insurance if you want it
most people dont really feel like they need it, but if you want to pay more for premium service like a private hospital room and shorter waiting lists, then you're totally welcome to do that in australia, and never set foot inside a govt hospital or see a government funded doctor

It is mainly a problem with video games, but as far as I can see it's only affected Left 4 Dead 2 with the reduced gore and such. They are also updating the rating system, so by the end of this year there will be an 18+ rating for video games, removing censorship of them completely. Most people here either pirate or buy games from ozgameshop.com, so we don't really deal with censorship anyway since ozgameshop is cheaper than retail every time.

    Gladly.

We have a prime minister who lied to us about what is effectively a corporate tax which will inevitably affect consumers.

There are some people here who cling to violent and hateful culture. There is some overt rascism aroubd and a fair bit more beneath the surface.

The state governments of our three most populated states are pretty much hopeless.

We have a media that is both excellent and unbiased and biased and sensationalist. One side is for intelligent people, the other is not. Still, we let some shockingly awful journalism see the light of day, day after day.

We have a few loud, stupid politicians who consistently get the attention of that shitty side of the media I mentioned earlier.

Our telecommunications services are overpriced and so are many other goods and services.

There's much more, but really it's still a wonderful place to live.

    >you can get thrown in jail for a long time for minor drug offences
This largely depends on the state laws.

In my state, possession of up to one ounce of marijuana is a misdemeanor. For first-timers, that means a fine and/or community service. However, in my county it's rarely enforced. Local cops tend to just confiscate your stash and let you go.

Most states are surprisingly lenient when it comes to weed, though a few are particularly tough. Nothing compared to Japan or the UAE though.

It's experience. I don't believe paranoia is even a valid term that deserves inclusion in the English language. There's hesitation, and there's cowardice for people afraid of something. People with experience are experienced, not paranoid. If someone expects something that seems to be the case, they are perceptive and rational for preparing for it.

Your delusional, unworkable ideals of reliance on others for your outlook is typical of idiots, people refusing to think and decide for themselves for fear of ridicule.
