Is there such a thing as a good, free e-mail provider?

By good I mean: 1. Decent spam filter, 2. SSH/IMAP access, 3. Effectively no storage limits (eg. large enough to be irrelevant) and 4. Won't just suddenly disappear within the next 5+ years.

Or do I literally have to buy and run my own mail server if I want something that isn't absolute trash?

I've been using G-mail until now but I'm seriously concerned about my privacy when it comes to Google. I want to effectively stop using all Google services and this includes Gmail.

I've heard this before but it's probably just a troll - are they really not absolute shit? (Considering it's AOL, and also American)

    I don't know if I can trust a corporation.

Running away is better than just submitting myself. I can still take steps to prevent myself from being among the first victims.

    >>20652233
I have my own address on a custom domain but the problem is that it's just linked to the G-mail service internally. Just a domain is nothing, the expensive part is running the actual mail server as well.
    >> Anonymous 10/18/11(Tue)11:51 No.20652278
Well there was that one site but they stopped giving accounts bu t they were like underground you know? except it was the internet, and I think you had to be a bit of a hacker to use it.

stop using ALL sites that use recaptcha then.

    >>20652302
No, I don't give a shit about the captcha - I care about the /content/. If Google is tracking every single word of every single E-mail I ever read or write, or every single search I make, that's an entirely different problem.

I have no problems with them knowing that I /use/ a certain website (the domain is written right at the end of the email address either way).

This is a public website. Everything that I publish here is publicly available and it is by my decision, knowledge and consent so.

I wouldn't post anything that's personally incriminating or severely links myself to my real world persona on public websites like this.

That still doesn't concern e-mails which may or may not be private.

You're kidding, right? It's fairly easy, I just don't want to spend unneeded sums of money as something as trivial as e-mail.

I may as well not use an e-mail address at all.

I'd rather not forward any incoming connections to my personal machine, plus my uptime isn't that great (on either my router or my home machine).

That would also more plainly broadcast its IP, which would make my machine suspect to DoS and DDoS attacks - not only because of the public MX record but also of course because I would have to set up some sort of dynamic DNS solution, as my home IP is not static.

And finally, depending on how much spam I get, the extra bandwidth processing all of it may become significant, seeing as I'm still on dialup-era speeds.

If you really can't do this, then just go use hushmail or lavabit or something. And honestly, gmail really isn't that bad.

The website looks rather shoddy though:
    >If your one of our corporate customers
    They can't even speak English.

Nonetheless, their philosophy of providing open source, enough encryption to prevent even engineers from reading message contents, and promising not to sell my personal information (this promise is dubious though as I have no way to believe them) has convinced me even if they apparently aren't capable of simple typography.

Oh, and their website claims to be XHTML strict and CSS compliant, and while I'm not going to go ahead and test that myself, it at least shows that they care about not being absolute trash.

ZohoMail actually looks interesting as well. I have no idea how robust their security or privacy (I doubt it's that good), but they run everything over your own MX record.

Go with Microsoft. No other corporation has the government further up its ass and no corporation has as many "hackers" searching for flaws and bugs so they can post about them on their blog about how hard Microsoft sucks.
