    http://stallman.org/archives/2011-jul-oct.html#06_October_2011_(Steve_Jobs)

Steve Jobs, the pioneer of the computer as a jail made cool, designed to sever fools from their freedom, has died.

As Chicago Mayor Harold Washington said of the corrupt former Mayor Daley, "I'm not glad he's dead, but I'm glad he's gone." Nobody deserves to have to die - not Jobs, not Mr. Bill, not even people guilty of bigger evils than theirs. But we all deserve the end of Jobs' malign influence on people's computing.

Unfortunately, that influence continues despite his absence. We can only hope his successors, as they attempt to carry on his legacy, will be less effective.

As much as I love Stallman, I wish he was capable of putting his agenda down for a minute. Steve Jobs may not have been as amazing as the media make out, but his contribution wasn't entirely negative. He was pretty closely involved with the design of the first GUIs for one thing.

He's a jackass, but his values are self-consistent with his actions. Same thing goes for libertarians and the unabomber. They're all not insane, they've reached a conclusion and they are making decisions based on that conclusion. Smart people can disagree, but doing so at the cost of sociopathy is generally superceded by the Walmartians of the world.

tl;dr He's a sociopath about his beliefs but shouldn't we all be?

It's weird how Stallman supports pedophilia and necrophilia but thinks proprietary software is evil. He has a strange moral code.

FSF doesn't do this. Only people that want to use GPL code but not abide by the GPL would post such a statement, thus easily conclude he is a pig developer who wants to steal GPL code for his own benefit.

Nk you are confused, I would never use gpl'd code, nevertheless rms stands against making a living by selling binaries (in theory you can, but no one would buy a binary if they can compile it themselves).
So... Rms is against my way of living.
    >> Anonymous 10/07/11(Fri)09:53 No.20435459
    >>20435402
You can use GPL code and not release the source so long as you don't release the binaries.

So if a corporation wants to use it internally they're perfectly allowed to. They just can't distribute it in any way. This seems pretty reasonable. Especially considering it is the same tactic that gives closed source software an edge. Then there exists these closed environments that depend on publicly released software.

Why shouldn't there be environments that depend on open-source software? You can't really argue it is ALWAYS a bad thing. Sometimes it is a bad strategy, like for creating a new file format that improves on predecessors. It might be great, but without adoption you won't get anywhere.

Without GPL you're coding for corporations releasing/selling software who aren't employing you. This isn't necessarily always good/bad thing but if someone wants their code and its derivatives to stay open then they can use GPL.

That's not true at all. (nothing of it). Maybe stallman is against your way of life of talking shit and coding shit software without releasing sources under a license which increases the probability that someone from the internets corrects all its errors like the gpl.
you can always make money by selling binaries and giving support. if it isn't shit software people will pay for it.
