    Mechanical keyboard general.

    Post your keyboard.
Debate your choices (which mostly amounts to shitting on razer, since /g/ hates anyone trying to appeal to them.)

OP here. The pic I used in OP is not my keyboard, but some anon's.

I have a keyboard with blues and one with browns. I used to hate the blues and only use the browns, but now I'm feeling the blues. I used to feel self conscious when typing on them, even though I live alone. But now I think they're kind of cool. Not sure what changed.

I got a Rosewill RK-9000 a while ago when they were $80, before they ran out of stock. I hear they actually got more stock in though; but the price is $99 now. I have no idea if it's the same model as before though, the RK-9000 was essentially a cheap rebranded Filco with Cherry Blues, but Filco stopped making keyboards didn't they? I know elitekeyboards stopped stocking them a while ago.

The Cherry switches feel similar, but they're lighter and the sound is more of a click than the buckling spring's clack.

This is how I suspect I'd feel. I have a heavy typing style, so buckling springs seem perfect to me. Maybe I'll just wait until I get some more extra cash and splurge on a Space Saving Model M. Then I'd have my two favorite IBM keyboards to hang on to and probably use for the rest of my life. A Leopold is just tempting because they're quite affordable brand new.

You can do it without NKRO.

I can do it with 6KRO. It just cannot be done on 2KRO. Which is what membranes and the old black widow are.

The problem I have with the old black widow was they marketed it as a 'gaming' keyboard then used the worst switch type and gave it 2kro, which defeats the point entirely of having a mechanical keyboard.

They must have been high as shit in that staff meeting.

I haven't a clue why "gamers" even buy mechanical keyboards. For gaming there's not any huge disadvantage to regular rubber domes.

NKRO is good for stepmania. I literally can't play it on my blackwidow since it won't recognize three arrow keys at once.

The keyboard you posted is ugly as hell. Type looks ugly. Enter is too big. Backslash is in the wrong space, as is ESC. Hard to find insert/delete/home/end/pgup/pgdown by feel because of the layout.

Holy shit, I never even thought of it. You are right, NKRO is pointless, but more than 2KRO is pretty handy even for your average gamer. Above 4 though you wont start to see any difference.

And mechanical have a far better feel, and are more responsive and can allow you to press keys faster than a membrane. You don't have to be a 'professional' gamer to what to get more comfort out of using a keyboard.

Depends on the type of switch. Pretty much all of them have a lifespan that completely dwarfs a rubber dome membrane board, though.

Most actuate part-way through the keystroke and have feedback (tactile or audible), which makes typing faster and easier. You also suffer less finger strain if you aren't always bottoming out your keys.

    >>20332389

It's when you can feel or hear when the switch in the key goes off.

Like in pic related you can both hear and feel the steel spring slam into the plastic barrel wall when the switch goes off.

This way you know exactly when the keystroke has completed and can move on to the next key without having to push the key all the way down until it bottoms out.

    >finger strain

It's a big RSI-related issue among professions like data entry, causing swelling of the joints and can result in arthritis.

It's unrelated to carpal tunnel syndrome, which stems from poor wrist placement that compresses the carpal tunnel in the wrist while typing.

You can fag your way around this thread all you want, but here's the thing: I VERY rarely meet someone who has regretted a mechanical keyboard purchase; even a relatively shitty one like the Blackwidow.
Here's the other thing: While there are keyboards that are bad for mechanicals, there are almost no mechanicals that are bad keyboards in general. When you pay for a mechanical, you not only pay for the switch, but for build quality and durability.
To get a rubber dome with the same build quality and durability you would have to pay almost as much. Your average gaymar logitarp rubber dome keyboard can cost almost 100 bucks or more after a quick glance on amazon. Mechanicals will last many times as long, will feel consistently good, and will stay together for years.
As an example, many IBM Model Ms, a keyboard made in the 80s, are still used today, and still function just as well today.
Not only that, but even if a switch breaks, it's incredibly easy to replace.

The keyboard is the most important interface between you and your computer. For people who work on the PC, or even for people who just spend a lot of time on it, a good, well built mechanical keyboard is important.

Having mechanic keyboard really doesn't help with this, one with this problem should rather buy keyboard that has keys remapped so that writing requires less finger movement from key to another. Like dworak, or something like on image.

You misunderstand the cause of the damage entirely. It's not the finger's movement that causes joint damage; it's the repeated impacts transmitted up the finger as keys are bottomed out.

This sort of strain is unavoidable with common rubber dome/membrane keys because the only way to register a keystroke is to bottom them out.

I suppose extraneous finger movement could lead to muscle strain in the fingers, but the muscles are by far the most resilient part of them. So much so that I've never even heard of such an injury occurring before a joint or carpal tunnel injury.

Mechanical keyboards have true parts behind them. And TBH that's basically it. Plus there is a preference for the tactile feel they provide.

Blues are definitely the way to go for typing and will work just fine for gaming as well.

The problem with them as far as gaming goes is the noise. What's helpful while typing can be distracting while gaming.

Get linear switches (Red or Black, preferably Black). If you play FPS games, you're going to be holding down buttons (ie: bottoming them out) all the time.

Blues have a problem with double tapping because their actuation point isn't the same as their release point. Meaning you can't double tap as fast. Games where you need to double tap W to dash or something will drive you fucking nuts when using Blues.

Brown is sort of an interim between typing and gaming. They have tactile feedback, but they're quiet and have an actuation point that meets the release point. But if you're going to playing games 80 - 90% of the time, it'd be better to get Blacks.

Blacks have a nice stiffness to them that prevents accidental keystrokes. They're also linear so it's better for games where you'll be holding a button to move in a direction, etc. Reds are good too, but /g/ gives it a lot of flak for being a shitty switch because it's neither tactile nor stiff enough to prevent accidental keystrokes. Reds are also still sort of rare to find at the moment.

I was not aware they even offered that.

The keycaps are very easy to remove and replace, though. Just mind the exposed spring since they don't make two-part caps like IBM did.

    What's shipping like from unicomp?

The good places, I imagine, are the same place that are good here, and that's thrift stores, or whatever faggoty name you give them in England, thrifty shoppy-does. But the question is were there a lot of early IBM PCs sold in the UK up to the 90s? because if they aren't there they aren't there.

I am often typing on my computer but would like to play Stepmania again; I stopped before because my keys kept not responding. I will be building a new PC soon; what would be a good keyboard for typing and playing Stepmania? UK layout is a MUST and blank tenkeyless is preferable.

This is completely untrue. The "standard" keyboard layouts of today are not the result of rigorous design and usability decisions but a mishmash of broken, half thought, unthought, obsoleted shit most of which was just thrown in on whatever iteration for whatever purpose and the world is left with the stuff that stuck.

How is it? I wanted a mechanical keyboard, but was also sort of wanting a backlight for gaming at night. I've already got the same mouse as you, and I really like it, as well as the black/green colour scheme. Although the $150 price is kind of off-putting. How are the blacks for typing? What I've been reading it seems like browns might be better for me... (not blues though since I don't want CLACKCLACKCLACK)

Blacks don't CLACKCLACK but browns are for me better for typing. I like my 6Gv2 but I kind of use it out of necessity for being completely fed up with the membrane feel and there being no browns keyboards in its price range that aren't Razer. You should unlearn whatever habits make you require backlighting or even considering it "nice".

Guys I need help; I mostly browse 4chan chat on IRC and do a fair bit of typing for other things. I am often typing on my computer but would like to play Stepmania again; I stopped before because my keys kept not responding. I will be building a new PC soon; what would be a good keyboard for typing and playing Stepmania? UK layout is a MUST and blank tenkeyless is preferable.
I have been looking at the Filco Majestouch-2 Tenkeyless with MX Browns.
    http://www.keyboardco.com/keyboard_details.asp?PRODUCT=804

Anyone have any experience picking a keyboard for Stepmania? What should I be looking out for?

    Thanks for all help!

For lots of stuff outside of the main keys, yes. Is it that bad that I sometimes have trouble finding pause/function keys not near the breaks (F1/4/5/8/9/12) and other random-ass buttons in the dark? I also only remember what shift-functions of some of the letters do. I know most[!,$,*,(,)], but the lesser-used ones[@,#,^] I can't touch-type. It's less for typing though, and more for gaming. When I've got my fingers on WASD, I'm not gonna be able to just reach over for anything past G or H in the dark. Sure, Q/E/Z/X/C/F/>>20339188
V/other keys right beside WASD are fine, but fuck me I can't easily find the others in the dark. So it's fine for some games, but a pain in the ass for ones that require lots of keys for different stuff. I could play stuff like Quake fine, but any kind of tactical game is pretty annoying. Also in StarCraft certain hotkeys (especially when I offrace) I'm not too good at. I'd turn off the backlight during the day, though.

I was under the impression that browns were like the blacks as far as noise was concerned, but gave more tactile feedback (but little noise feedback), and were a nice compromise for gaming/typing.

Oh yeah, I wasn't trying to imply browns are noisy. Perhaps noisier than blacks which is less noisy than the average membrane keyboard but blues are the real clackfest.

I have a das keyboard with browns, it works well. I think as long as you have n key rollover + browns you're good to go.

Believe it or not i've actually pressed more than 4 keys at once while playing an fps, jump, crouch, forward, switch weapon, right. I have 5 fingers and I can hit over 6 keys with them if the situation calls for it. So gamers do need Nkey rollover in the heat of battle.

When I used to play CS:S it was fairly common to be pressing 4 keys at once; I doubt I ever had to exceed that though. GOD DAMN IT WE'RE MEN NOT OCTOPI.

Where do you live? ANSI is the US' keyboard configuration. ISO is for the rest of the world.

I was lucky to find one in Spanish. A friend of mine had a clicky Dell, but was in English.

Mechanicals are fantastic. That noise, the response. Typing on my university's OEM HPs (you know which ones I mean) feels lame now.

I got mine almost for free, but it makes sense to invest wisely on a confortable, solid keyboard as much as you ogle that GPU or cooling system.

Topre keys. They're capacitative spring-loaded rubber domes, so they go off without bottoming out and are nearly silent.

They're alright for what they are, but if you're going to use a "silent" key switch that's so expensive to manufacture, you should have just gone ahead and used Hall effect switches.

    ok guys, college fag here.

need a new keyboard for my build and gonna be typing a lot of papers... don't care about noise (actually find buckling spring noise relaxing)

so, blues are better for typing right? will be gaming too built want one for typing.

can anyone recommend a good blues switch keyboard for <$100?

thinking das with a student discount or the razer blackwidow (not ultimate)

Das with student. Blue is best for typing. Fuck the razer one. Cheap build quality, problems with it. But it is cheap, so you can give it that.

Or you could look for a model M.

    Either is bueno.
