  • Happy 8th Birthday, 4chan *click*

Server/posting issues should be resolved now.

Portland, OR folks: You are invited to drink beers, play arcade games, and eat delicious donuts.
The *tentative* plan is to meet up Saturday, at 10PM @ Ground Kontrol ($2 cover after 9PM, 21+ after 5PM), and grab donuts at Voodoo after midnight.
If anything changes I'll post it to @4chan on the Twitter (so follow it if you're thinking about coming).

    ITT: The Truth
    >Computers should only need to allow people to look at YouTube, Facebook, and e-mail and let them use Word; the vast majority of people don't need to do anything else.
    >Corporations attaining your personal information is not a big concern, they're responsible organizations that simply want to use your information for targeted advertisements and marketing purposes.
    >There's no need to use anything but Windows or Mac, they're easy to use and give most people exactly what they need.
    >The Internet should be regulated and some sites must be off limits. There is no justification anyone can give to allow pedophiles to distribute child pornography or allow hackers to compromise government or business sites.

    >Gaming should be relegated to console systems. They have specialized input controls optimized for gaming. They are preferable because they can be simply operated and configured and can play any game designed for them without having to worry about upgrading software or hardware. True they may not have the best graphics, but they are adequate enough for most people and their convenience trumps this.

    1:

Academic research. That aside, you're basically saying that nobody should be allowed to read books that aren't assigned by schools or the government, because the vast majority don't read anything else. Digital and physical media are no different in this respect.

    2:

It is a concern, because quite simply it pisses people off, contributes to insecurity, and if the wrong information becomes public, can destroy relationships.

    3:

Linux is free, linux runs better on old hardware, linux is better for tinkering, linux is better for networking, linux even has better CAD programs. Fuck.

    4:

Pedophiles use private networks, and hackers don't even need a shady BBS to compromise sites. Also, free speech.

    >You can not read this web page, it has been censored because we think it is wrong. We are taking it down.
    >You can not read this book. We're going to burn it now.
    >You can not hear this man speak, we are going to imprison him now.

The restriction is placed for greater ease of use. Placing it is a strategic decision made by the manufacturer for the product to appeal to a wider clientele.

those companies weren't responsible. But those are isolated cases where the wrongdoers were brought to justice. The vast majority of them operate well without incident.

    There's no need for worry.
    >> Anonymous 10/01/11(Sat)21:44 No.20326987
History has shown that corporations are in fact not responsible entities, they are entities concerned solely with the purpose of accumulating wealth. As seen by Enron, Wolrd Com, Tyco, Lemans Brothers, etc... they will go to often illegal means that many times harm the consumer in order for them to turn their profit. they do not care for the people, only the peoples money and an entity like that should have no power over anything.

The restriction doesn't make it easier to use. It restricts the potential consumer base to tech retards.

Making advanced features HEY THERE IN YOUR FUCKING FACE CHECK ME OUT ala linux scares people off. Keeping them but still having them out of the way is ideal for all parties.

It may piss some people off, but for the vast majority of people: it has no adverse effects.

There needs to be a compromise between constitutional rights and public safety. People should have rights, only after they are safe.

    so basically you're saying

Technology should be easy to use, otherwise most people wouldn't use it.

If ease of use compromises the abilities of piece of technology, that is an allowable compromise because if people can't use something, it might as well not exist.

Musical instruments are different from computers because they're interesting and fun to play. You get a return on your investment for playing one.

Computers are boring. They basically crunch numbers. Only nerds like computers.
