I have looked at free OCR programs a few years back.
Not for CAPTCHA but for some project I was working on.

Bottom line: there were only a few I could find and they were all utter shit.

I use uncaptcha.net to test it and its wrong every time...

I'd wager that uncaptcha.net caches the CAPTCHA verification codes through the guise of a 'game', and then uses those to 'crack' CAPTCHAs through the Firefox addon. OP makes money via ad revenue and stupid people.

This script monitors every picture you click on, if the image source url begins with the recaptcha url. It sends that image to our server. My OCR solves the captcha the best it can and sends the answer back to your page. Once it has the answer it inserts it into the captcha answer text box and changes the banner image to one that has a red border so you know its ready.

- One word they computed with OCR

You only have to get the first word correct.
