    choosing a harddrive

    either
    >500GB 7500rpm
    or
    >700GB 5000rpm

would there be a noticeable difference between the two rpm speeds?

    I'd guess maybe a third faster ;)

The difference will prolly be negligible, not as huge as, say, buying an SSD. Just go with the one with the biggest space.

Ok i'm going to go with a probably wrong but logical hypothesis that a 7200RPM drive will be no more than but close to 33% faster than a 5400RPM drive, as I would expect rotational speed to be directly related to the speed it can read data from platters, assuming all modern drives have similar if not the same density of data on the platters. I would expect the speed difference to be most noticeable when copying large sequential files, and least noticeable when copying many smaller or fragmented files.
    >> Anonymous 09/08/11(Thu)04:43 No.19892886
Derp. If you need enough file storage to justify a 500GB drive, you need 7200rpm. They are cheap. This is a question for 4 years ago when they were not so cheap. Today's issues are: Do I want an SSD for OS and big drive for storage, or am I a fag, or what.
    >> Anonymous 09/08/11(Thu)04:43 No.19892889
I got a 1TB WD Green, which is 5900rpm but boosts to 7200rpm on demand (apparently)

But it's become rather slow, maybe because it hasn't defragmented in over 7 months. I've only dumped about 90GB onto it, though it's unpartitioned and used as the system drive.

I'm wondering if defragging would be wise, or make that much of a difference. But I think in future I'll either get an SSD or definitely a 7200rpm drive, because I can't stand when things open slowly.

    doing it COMPLETELY. FUCKING. WRONG.

Green drives are for storage only.

nope, its cus its a wd green used as system drive.

google "X reasons not to use a green for system drive"

defragging doesnt have shit to do with it.

Fuck! Well that's the last time I'm getting a 'green' drive then. Did some googling and seems that performance on the black is way higher.

Only got the green because it was recommended to me by an 'expert'. Guess he didn't expect me to expect high performance from my drive.
