What's /g/'s thought on the state of the IT job market?

I'm 23 with an associates degree, a hand full of entry level certs(A+, MCP, CCENT) and a couple years of work experience in entry level positions. I'm growing tired of menial helpdesk and technician jobs and would really like to do something with a little more responsibility than installing hard drives and operating systems for barely more than minimum wage.

I have had no luck applying for full time networking positions(where I plan on specializing) and the only well-paying jobs I've landed were short term contracts. I'm well aware finishing up my bachelor's and/or getting the CCNA would help in the job search, but would it greatly increase the chance of employers to show interest?

Feel free to share your employment stories if you'd like.

    >IT job market
According to department of labor statistics last time I checked, IT jobs (specifically related to software programming) are being created at a rate of 50k/year MORE than the amount of graduating engineers the US produces.

Who makes up the difference here? Foreigners (smelly Indians and Middle Easterns who usually are trained in "Visual Studio" and are only effective as low-level programmers not independent engineers), and people in other fields with degrees hopping over because they see the money and don't care that they aren't really qualified.

Yes, having a degree makes you a lot more noticeable to hiring managers (most of which have degrees.) That + experience make you a known quantity. Otherwise it's always a risk to hire somebody who says they're great but couldn't even stay focused for 4 years to get a degree. Ignoring all else, on average a degree gets you 25% more pay over your lifetime. If your resume doesn't have one listed it just tells me you didn't care enough about your life to get it done.

I'm a software engineer; although I've worked with network guys who had A+ etc. I don't know much about it. I do know that when a company is looking to hire someone dirt cheap, that's when we might pull people out of the pile without a degree.

For network guys, certifications can help a lot. Even with a lower economy people with skills that most can't do (technical in this case) always have opportunities. And to keep it in perspective, average salary across the US is only 50k and minimum wage is like 18k or something. I doubt you're making such a small amount as even a beginner networking guy.

Not bad at all, I only ask because that's pretty much where I want to go for the next 4-5 years, study, get experience, get certs, and get a degree.

Specifically for the certs, and getting a degree as a bonus for employers.

And work for more certs and gaining whatever experience I can get.

I hate the stigma that is tied with not completing a 4 year degree. Not everyone is a trust fund kiddie with a flexible schedule required for full time classes. I'm working towards my final "year" right now but it's going to be another two or three since I can only get a class or two each semester that works around my schedule.

Looks like somebody payed attention at the career fair in high school.

25% blah blah blah. Also costs a lot of money and four years you could have in experience.

OP, if you want a non-menial job, what non-menial jobs do you know how to do?

Puppet is in high demand and rising very quickly if you want to go that route.

Also I don't see how you want to go into networking while you're not even CCNA and know shit about networking. Read up and go for a CCNA if not CCNP.

    >>19891545
A+ means you can swap HDDs, install RAM, and not really much else. Certifications (except Cisco) mean nothing, I've met so many clueless people with the wildest certifications. Unsurprisingly most of them Microsoft Certified this and Microsoft Certified that.

OP here, not the guy you were replying to, but I currently make less than $10/hr as the sole "admin"/IT guy for the midwest's largest vinyl manufacturer. It's horrible pay for the work, but I'm at a school with cheap tuition and IT jobs are nonexistent in this rural area. Gotta take what I can get at the moment.

I used to live in the city a couple hours away making $15-$20/hr. Like I said, they were only short term contract positions, though. Not being able to find a long term job is the reason I decided to go back to school.

    where are you living?

in seattle IT unemployment is running around 2%. same in bay area. if you live in shitstain, usa or fuckington, europe, move.

also, find a tech oriented temping agency like volt, start getting some work. make a shitty android app so you can be sent out on jobs looking for mobile dev experience.

meanwhile, a friend of mine is doing web dev with NO degree (just 6 years of freelance experience) for 80K a year for a prominent game company. you actually have some paper saying you have a skill. if you don't want to move, find a little start up or start taking craigslist dev jobs until you have a portfolio that gets you work.

i mean, i've got friends who haven't even graded high school working at google's new branch in seattle. they just have a little job experience, which you have now too you clod.

    hustle.

mfw my parents live in the ghetto and I had to earn scholarships or not go to college; and work minimum wage jobs 20-30 hours a week the full 4 years so I could buy textbooks, pay for gas, fix shitty $500 car because we didn't have money for anything better, etc.

    >Looks like somebody payed attention at the career fair in high school.
Paid attention, but I graduated 8 years ago. During recessions and layoffs I have still managed 5 raises of 10-20k EACH. Without the degree, no way I could move up.

    >25% blah blah blah. Also costs a lot of money and four years you could have in experience.
4 years of low-level menial experience like this other guy is finding out. He could work another 10 years fixing hard drives and it won't count for shit. And yeah, if you ignore making an extra 25% you are a chump. The people who make a lot of money without a degree are the rare exception.

Yes. CCNA and above are the only meaningful certs in IT. That's how I see it. I do IT for a medium sized company and I glance over people's resumes to advise the recruiters from HR.

Knowing Cisco means you can also work with most other networking hardware.

I said 8 years. I started low (40k) and ended at 90, but I worked with commercial real estate which got hit hard by, you know, that whole industry collapse. So I see it as a pretty big accomplishment that I was able to get raises at all. Ended at 90k; went independent, 150/hour rate now. Avoiding a masters and studying on my own, but may be forced to go back so I can break 200/hour.

Three years is a lifetime in the IT world. Technologies commonplace today were only in their infancy three years ago. Technology changes, and exams are updated along with it. I can completely understand the reasoning behind it.

I'll not only be helping them move, but they want to completely update their network infrastructure.

At the same time I'm a barista on the side. At the same time i'm studying (CS and CST), while continuing to network and build contacts.

So far every job I've done has gotten bigger and bigger. Not only that I'm taking any certification course i can and getting pointers from my friends at DOD.
So far I've had employers skip interviews all together and just hand jobs over a silver platter when they have them.
