I usually don't create threads on /g/, but I'm not seeing a thread about a subject I think we'd all like to discuss:

    >canv.as

It just launched, open access. It was announced on reddit (ugh), and a few other sites. The reddit entry got deleted due to tons of negative comments, probably, but it's still available for viewing.

    http://www.reddit.com/r/reddit.com/comments/k6npf/canvas_is_now_public_its_a_new_place_to_share_and/

    -the-public/

    http://gigaom.com/2011/09/06/canvas-a-grown-up-4chan-opens-to-the-public/

I'm not as tech-savvy as I'd like to be. What kind of software and technologies is canv.as based on?

You know, the entire concept is cancer.

It's flawed at it's core - it's a site that sets out to make something which CANNOT be made on purpose, or with an intended direction. There is no quality control, there is only a well-oiled machine with distinct tools and guidelines for creating content.

Consider reddit's "rage-comics". This is what we are looking at people.

Worst case, you get an unending stream of worthless content making it's way to the internet, propagating it's meaningless messages to every last decimal in the IP-range.

This thing, canv.as, is a cancer machine.

"Fools", said I, "You do not know -
    canv.as like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
    And echoed
    In the wells of ignorance

reddit has some strong points, but it's being drowned in the stupidity of it's user base.

I know that sounds hypocritical coming from a post on 4chan, but that's not the standpoint I'm arguing from, and if it was:

The stupidity you find on 4chan is a self-aware kind of idiocy. It's heaps of stupid shit. But everyone knows it's stupid.

On reddit? Not so much. It's filled with serious people, while kind and good spirited, extremely naive, and hypocritical. A collection of anti-semites, not in it for humour, but honesty.

Honest ignorance is the worst kind of ignorance, and the most dangerous.

say what you want but the servers are pretty stable and you can pretty much make any board you want.

    It's everywhere.

The only way out is sticking to niche subreddits.

As for the karma system, it's a terrible thing.

    It discourages discussion.

I could write a few paragraphs, containing what I know to be errors, and nobody would question it - people rarely seem to take a stance, because they lack knowledge. Instead, they upvote because they do not understand.

If I wrote a few paragraphs, about a subject, containing no opinions, but factual observations with no conclusions, which happen to stray away from the average redditors world view, how does the redditor respond?

By downvoting. The system discourages discussion. Therefore you get this silent fanboyism permeating the entire system.

Karma-whoring, and all that stuff only makes it worse.

I think reddit might become better if only single posts and threads receive karma - the user can't rack up loads of karma on his account(s).

And I'm not so sure if the downvote arrow is needed. It's good for getting rid of the hateful and spammy stuff, but really bad for a lot of other stuff.

If you truly make an intelligent post in either direction, they are more likely to downvote because of that. The average redditor doesn't like confirmation bias when he has to think about it.

Often, some guy will make a lolsorandumb herpdederp reply and get you downvoted further.

If it's necessary to keep as much of the current system as possible, then there should be a upvote button and a report button, which requires you to specify why you're reporting the post, with options for spam, hateful content, and opinions I disagree with. Reporting costs karma. Twice as much if you report using the last option.

    >>19864388
I was thinking a lot of it would be automatic, a single thread would be weighted by activity, and enough independent reports (congruent with the thread weight) would result in the downvoting of a post. Abnormalities would alert a mod, as would any extremes. A single report wouldn't do anything, even in a slow thread, but a few reports in a slow thread would be enough to adjust a posts' standing. Similarly, you'd require more reports to adjust posts in faster and more populated threads.

Django seems like a bit of an odd choice for a site that doesn't appear to be extremely complex. It's really, really nice to develop in but rather slow for a site aimed to gather a billion views per second.

Then again, that pretty much applies to every framework out there, and I'm sure there's worse. Still, it looks like it'll need a reddit-style caching setup with a retarded amount of cache layers.

    Oh boy.

When I last cared for reddit, they had:
    - Akamai caching completely static pages for pretty much the entire site for people without a valid login cookie
    - S3 for images
    - memcached caching individual page bits, such as links, individual link text in HTML, comment trees, comments
    - Cassandra caching user-specific data like the frontpage layout for 10 minutes, as well as Markdown -> HTML converted versions of the comments
    - Their server software doing some very basic caching shit like the subreddit list
    - PostgreSQL as final, real, authoritative data store

Layer upon layer upon layer with frequent breakage and downtime.

    >>19864531
    >>19864634
And the worst part, they never cached full page HTML for logged in users. You could see stuff like the ad code changing every F5. This despite the fact that the logged-in-user frontpage is cached at other layers for 10 minutes or until invalidated through unsubscribing.

In short, they missed something that results in a billion memcached retrieves. I actually went over that part of the code and derped.

4chan works at being funny and innovative because there is no permadamage. someone didn't like your shit? so what, you're still anon, nobody will ever know it was you.

reddit, canvass, etc. = "hurrr durrr look at me I'm funny gimme karma/stickers" = guaranteed circlejerks and common-denominator-pasta

    >4chan is played out, what do I do now?
    >Wait, people love posting images on 4chan
    >People also love reddit
    >LETS COMBINE THE TWO
    >BY YOUR POWERS COMBINED I AM CANV.AS
    Horrible.

yeah but there's no counter/highscore for tripfags where you can see "derp all these people liked what I said". besides, they're a minority

It's world of difference, best experienced by visiting reddit itself.

    Although I wouldn't recommend it.
