    LaTeX and a good editor.
It's possible to tex the average algebra lecture in real-time with some practice. The best thing about TeX is that it's compatible with version control. If several students keep a git repo with their lecture notes, you can easily merge them and spot errors.

It's definitely worth it. However I have to add that I'm using mostly it in math related lectures. For lectures that are not formula heavy, a desktop wiki like Zim is a more comfortable alternative. Zim stores its data in plain-text which makes it also compatible with version control and it's capable of embedding LaTeX code.

    http://zim-wiki.org/

AFAIK it's for GNU operating systems only though.

Worst advice in the thread. You will drown in your recordings. Just take good notes and learn the material BEFORE the lecture, so that the lecture is review, not the first time you see the material. You will rock every course.

I've been experimenting a lot since Uni.

I've gotta say, I used to prefer p&p greatly but recently my attention and handwriting have both deteriorated so much that often I can no longer read my own notes.

I find onenote to be a better tool than most things I've tried. the main help is typing constantly helps me concentrated and I can take very detailed notes. the down side is it's harder to format than p&p and not nearly as concise to study later.
