I think everyone here hates "the cloud". Heck even the word gives me nausea.

    everybody here hates clouds because
nobody here has been outside and seen clouds
also storing stuff online is all magnitudes of retarded

I don't mind cloud storage but the idea of cloud computing where all my programs are on the cloud is so fucking scary

What a lot of people fail to realize is that this "Cloud" is only the beginning.

Soon enough here once it has become complete in it's utilization and fine tuned to the point of perfection, all major operating systems will be cloud based because it's the end game to prevent piracy. You can't pirate something stored on a cloud infrastructure and store that data on a system that isn't designed for anything else than running an application off of a server remotely.

Cloud computing will be the end of times for open systems.

in that case I'll just install gentoo

My server lets me store 4TB of music/movies/tv shows and access, download, and stream them from any computer, phone, or tablet.
    what's your point?

i didn't have to pay for a server and i get to use google's network to stream, which is way better than the kind of upstream you have

    >1970s

Everything is a thin client, everything runs on the mainframe somewhere. Nerds dream of one day having actual local storage and processing power.

    >1980s

The dawn of the actual home computer. Now all your data is your. The mainframe model completely dies out in the face of what is hailed as a breakthrough, things will never be the same.

    >2010s

"The cloud" takes over. Now all your data and apps (processing power) exists in some datacenter (mainframe) somewhere enabling access to your digital life from anywhere (subject to terms and conditions/acceptable use policy/account my be closed at any time without prior warning/provider will comply with any and all requests from authorities whether theyve got a warrant or not they dont give a fuck) and the days of selling actual CPUs and storage to the consumer are long gone, replaced by thin clients again via tablets, tablets everywhere. This is hailed as a breakthrough and things will never be the same.

I dont get it. The cloud is a step backwards. Honestly i think its an engineered move by world govts to take control of eveyones data, and people are falling for it in droves.

The problem isn't going to be the operating system. It's rather going to be impossible to get computers with any sort of storage capacity or processing power. Prices will skyrocket.

Here's the thing I don't get about all this talk about cloud computing, is that long term storage is fucking cheap right now. You can get a HDD that has over a terabyte in space for 50 dollars. It may not be the fastest, but this is only for storage. Set up a ghetto server, with RAIDed HHDs for back protection, make a cutesy looking 2.0 webpage and just put your data there. I mean, how much shit does the average person have. Synching between devices can't be that hard considering how open "app" stores are.

I've been thinking of making "Personal Cloud" system and selling them for 500 dollars. Problem would be coding all the underlying programing.

I know Cloud Computing is really meant to be a more advanced form of time-sharing, but I can't ever see that happening; at least in NA with the way ISPs are.

    Fits perfectly.

Seriously though can you feel the force of the semen flying out of the cocks of the intelligence services and law enforcement over this whole cloud thing.

IE they could be wiretapping your shit right now because of lolpatriot act, which says they basically own all network infrastructure in the US and dont have to notify anyone of anything, and providers will comply with anything if they know whats good for them which they will. The legal framework for cloud computing in the US is probably worse than china.

    RESIST THE CLOUD.

I'm still finding the cloud computing concept fucking dumb. In a corporation, that's neat. I mean, why not use computing power from those accounting computers that only runs Excel to make a grid of computer ? That's practical and pretty cheap considering the gain. In the internet version, that's just bullshit. Why would I want my data to be located in some server farm ? Why would I want to play a game by streaming ? And most of all, why don't we all share computing power ? Because that's fucking ridiculous. Sharing computing power with a gigabit ethernet is reasonnable, sharing with a random connection speed is bullshit.
