    Dear /g/

Why is Firefox (left) so much uglier than Chrome (right) by default?
    >> Anonymous 08/14/11(Sun)11:25 No.19396987
You faggots wanted your GDI back.
    You got it.

    Enjoy your shit subpixel

I'd hardly call antialiased and bold text "ugly." Some people like it that way.
    >> Nettobooku !hAtsuNEzfo 08/14/11(Sun)11:27 No.19396997
Because GDI+ vs. DirectWrite/Direct2D. Your eyes are used to shitty GDI+ rendering, they'll soon adjust to the slightly better but still kinda crap DirectWrite soon enough.

I'm not even talking about subpixel rendering or any of that crap. I'm talking about simple shit like why the headers of each post are so much thicker in Firefox than in Chrome. Is it some sort of retarded setting which I'm not seeing in the content options? Why is it even different in the first place?

Fx 6 will have the about:config switches to fix this by default, right? Can't remember when they landed in Nightly.

It's less legible. At this thickness the letters almost lose their proper shape.

You make a fair point that some people prefer it thicker than Chrome, but Firefox goes too far. And isn't the option to customize (and make the font thicker) the point of Firefox's addon capabilities?

Is there even any way to thin out the fonts so they're not so bold? I know it's trivially easy to embolden fonts, but if the default, normal version is already too thick, what can one do?

Firefox uses subpixel rendering because it uses Windows' font thing

    Chrome doesn't use subpixel rendering

So if you don't see it

    It's not a big surprise.

It's supposed to be a general ClearType problem, isn't it?
    >> Anonymous 08/14/11(Sun)11:37 No.19397073

Firefox uses monochrome subpixel rendering, Chrome uses LCD subpixel rendering.
    >> !K.WeEabo0o 08/14/11(Sun)11:38 No.19397084
    >>19397064
Yeah, unfortunately if the surface bing rendered on isn't 100% opaque, fonts will be rendered with greyscale AA.
This happens with Cleartype, Directwrite and gdipp.

    >>19397073
No. Both use LCD subpixel rendering, just different methods.

Disable hardware acceleration in firefox and it will look exactly the same as the Chrome page, I had that problem too.

    No.

    >about:config

    Problem solved.
