If IBM had things their way, they would be another Apple.
The PC certainly did not start out as a platform of open standards. They tried to prevent third-party manufacturers, charging high "licensing fees" to any manufacturers who wanted to make accessories for the PC.
When this failed, they tried again in 1987 with the PS/2 line using new proprietary hardware... much of which quickly became the industry standard.
IBM got out of the PC market when they realized they couldn't control it.
IBM truly was a "big evil corporate giant" in the 80s. Luckily they've gone to great lengths to change this.

No modern historian even recognizes the title of the "Dark Ages" as anything more than base colloquialism by this point. There were numerous advances during that time, like the foundation for the modern university system + the modern hospital system we still use day, the invention of tools such as the heavy plow and eye glasses, the clock and the hourglass, the telescope... I could go on and on. And that's not even getting into the scientific advancements the Chinese and early Arabs made.
