I wanted something that could play H.264 encodes in MKV containers.

No other COWON player can do that. Hell my phone can't even play 1080p rips without compressing it down to a more manageable bit-rate and/or converting to a different container.

I don't have any of those issues with my D3, it's why I bought it.
