Holidays are by definition not secular. And most holidays are only really days off from work. What secular value does Christmas have? Stimulating the economy?

For me it is rest period, for others it is day of reflection and introspection. Frankly, if you believe in God or not people should probably do the same. You could find some value in that.

Eh, I wasn't necessarily agreeing that some people need religion for morals, just saying that we'll let that point stand because I didn't feel like debating it. Most people looks to their "role models" for morals anyway, very few (even of the religious) follow the law written within the various religions. If that was the case, Christians wouldn't cut their hair or their beard and they would make their women sleep in the floor.

I've never had Easter off at any job I've worked (other than this one, and that's just because it falls on my normal day off anyway). That said, Christmas can't really be claimed by any religion because its become a bastard child of several religious traditions, combined with commercialism and secular fairy tales. That in and of itself makes it close enough to secular that I don't really see a problem with it. Easter on the other hand is only related to one religion, and other than the Easter Bunny has no secular meaning to it.

Its less bitching about holidays, and more bitching about the fact that religion has a stranglehold on what's supposed to be a secular nation. Holidays are just an example of that.

Fair enough. But I don't see why a secular state shouldn't observe holidays of its most prominent religion. Just because this holiday belongs too one religion it shouldn't be observed? Why? It is still time off for non-believers, it's a fucking win-win. I'd like to see Islamic holidays too.

So should we remove all holidays? If no: which ones should we keep? Maybe the ones that are observed by a sizable chunk of that country's population? Oh wait, that would include Easter in America.

I simply asked if we should remove all holidays, and if not how to choose which ones to keep. If it is population based then Easter would have to be kept.

    Holidays every fucking day

Family-based holidays should be let off work, exclusively religious shit like 'Good Friday' should be fucking business as usual.
    >> Anonymous 04/24/11(Sun)02:12 No.17142111
    >>17142066
I don't know if you know, but Easter is generally celebrated with family. Maybe remove labor day. It's not religious, but it certainly isn't a family holiday. Sure, you can spend time with the family on that day, but you can do that with Easter too.

But apparently you believe it's association with religion means you aren't allowed to do anything on that day if you aren't Christian.

    >>17142111
'Good Friday' isn't typically a family holiday, it's related to Easter, but it's a goddamn religious observance holiday, fuck THAT. Let them have Easter Sunday, I don't give a shit about Sundays.
    >> Anonymous 04/24/11(Sun)02:18 No.17142200
    >>17142138

I was raised Catholic, trust me you spend Good Friday with your family. And again, even if you aren't Catholic you can still spend time with your family on that day. What if we removed Good Friday and installed "Non-denominational Friday in April Holiday" for which people can spend time with their family? Then everyone's happy.

Sounds fine, as long as absolutely no businesses nor government services close down for it.

    >>17142219
Then you wouldn't be able to spend the day with your family.

Is this truly a matter of you believing there are too many federal holidays? Or do you take issue with the fact it is of Christian origin?

I take issue with the fact that I can't do business on Good Friday, and packages that would've otherwise been delivered on the day get postponed until Monday or even later. Some of these motherfuckers aren't getting back to work until Wednesday.

    >>17142293

So, you don't like that people aren't working? Well then should we remove other Federal holidays as well? Or is just removing Good Friday, Passover and Easter enough to make it the PERFECT balance of federal holidays?
