Also, the way to run one of these sites *properly* is as a proxy, the same way universities access academic journals (haha). That way you can have a ton of users on the same login who appear to be from the same IP address, and no accounts get flagged for logging in from too many different places.

Optimize yer SQL buddy. Probably doing a full text search, right? That's gonna eat up cpu and memory. Check your indexes, use EXPLAIN then your query to see if you're doing table scans.You may want to use SOLR if at all possible, but on a shared host, probably not.
