You care about how you look, but you’re on a tight budget. Don’t worry, /fa/glet--I’ve assembled a few of the lessons I learned in college that might help.

    • Cobblers/leather repair shops/tailors/dry cleaners:
Customers are constantly leaving their shit at these places. You’d be surprised how often this happens. After a while the items are sold or thrown away. The wall behind the counter at my local cobbler is filled with forgotten leather bags and shoes that are up for grabs; however, not all places advertise their wares. Just walk in and ask if they have any old stuff that you can look through.

    • Craigslist:
Even if you live in a big city, craigslist is a craps shoot when you’re looking for something specific. BUT, if you set up an RSS feed with your search terms, you’ll be alerted the moment somebody lists what you’re looking for. Here’s a video tutorial that explains the concept: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJ4mm9H_gb8

    • Churches:
Find out if the houses of worship in your area hold rummage sales. If you’ve never heard of one, it’s a fundraising thing where members of an organization donate stuff to be sold. There’s a church around the corner from my place that puts up a sandwich board when it’s going down. Yours might not be so accommodating. Just walk in and ask.

    • Yard sales:
I remember weekend mornings spent in the back seat of my parents’ Subaru as we cruised through suburbia hunting for yard sales. Now that crap is all online. Check out yardsalesearch.com, yardsaletreasuremap.com, or good ol’ craigslist.

    • General advice:
Haggle. No excuses. Be aggressive and make the first offer. Leverage the power of anchoring (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anchoring) by naming a really low price first. Dressing like a bum helps too. Be vigilant. Be patient. Be VERY patient. You will have days when you visit five thrift shops and find nothing. It will be worth it when you find the perfect thing. Swap tags if you can. Learn to sew. Alter your own clothes.
