    >Going to JCPenny and buying a "fedora" in size "S-M" that sits at your hairline and looks like you're wearing a straw/canvas cone on your head.

    No.

    >Going to an actual hatter run by an experienced individual who knows what they're doing and makes it their business to select and recommend headwear, getting your melon measured and paying a little extra for a proper, fitted hat that not only compliments your face, but coordinates with your carefully chosen outfit (i.e. not a trench coat) without looking like a costume, and without being the center of attention and making you look like a massive flaming tool.

TL;DR: Wearing the hat like a man, rather than having it ride you like whore.

    Can it be done /fa/?

The trends were set sixty years ago. I'm just saying it could work if you put some actual time and effort into it. Even a good-fitting shirt and jeans can work, but as with anything, they just need to be the right shirt and jeans.

What makes you look like a douche is walking around with a blatantly obvious "look guys, I'm wearing a hat" attitude.
    >> Anonymous 12/05/11(Mon)21:21 No.3903274
    >>3903252
if you are under 40, you will be saying "look guys, I'm wearing a hat" to everyone who sees you with a hat. ESPECIALLY a fedora. fedoras are worn by that one guy in highschool along with dark wavy hair and several bracelets with skinny jeans. yea, that guy
    >> Anonymous 12/05/11(Mon)21:27 No.3903291
If you look badass without the hat then you could probably pull it off. This is true with many things.
    >> Gentlemanon 12/05/11(Mon)21:54 No.3903367
    >>3903291

Well that's just it. You don't need to be badass to look badass. A good hat is like a good suit, you need to have it made to fit you, and only you, which is something people seem to have forgotten. It should compliment your facial aesthetics and contribute to your overall symmetry, not take away from it. Choose something that goes well with your hair, as well as your complexion. Big ears? Wide brim. Big nose? No taper. Big jaw? Full snap. No chin? Flat snap.

Even the way you tilt it can drastically change how it looks and how it shapes your face.

    It's not rocket science.

Thing is, I'm not talking about people like them.

Sure, I'll be the first to admit that I'm not be the fittest guy ever, or have the most pleasing features, but I'm also not a neckbeard manchild who wears graphic t-shirts from Hot Topic with "board shorts" and Vans.

Like most guys here, I'd rather dress fairly sharply and care at least a little bit about how I present myself.

    >INB4 But Anon, if you cared, there'd be no hats you idiot.

All I'm saying is that any hat, not just the dubious fedora, can be pulled off with a just little thought and coordination, and yes, it might actually look good, even by today's standards.

    Just give it a chance.

ITT teenagers who live in california, or something

    easy test:

do you own any sneakers with velcro on them?
do you live somewhere that it never gets cold?
do you own any of the following: a skeleton watch, a pocket watch, a cigarette holder, or any DVDs or Blu-Ray discs of any anime, animation (including the Simpsons, Futurama, etc), or anything ever shown on cartoon network?
are you incapable of growing a well defined beard in 2 weeks of not shaving?
have you had more than 2 conspicuous pimples on your face in the past 12 months?
are you unable, at this moment, to recite your own measurements for any one of the following (a) a suit, (b) a dress shirt, (c) non-athletic shoes, and (d) trousers
would you have trouble tying a tie with a presentable knot in under 30 seconds with no mirror?
    are you a virgin?

this should be a pretty easy test to pass, but if you didn't pass with 100% no answers, you should probably not consider buying a fedora or any brimmed hat.
    >> Anonymous 12/05/11(Mon)22:54 No.3903517
A noble sentiment, but I'll need some real proof before I'm convinced.

Yes, neckbeards have ruined the image of the fedora, but some guys can pull it off, and some guys can't.

Few guys know how to wear a hat, so when they do, it completely ruins it. And most people nowadays won't bother to learn how to wear one, since they lost interest / don't care / whatever. It really is a lost art.

It doesn't take a "real man" to wear one, just a smart man.

Well, the hat is a little too high on your head. The brim is too wide, which makes your face look longer that it probably should, the taper is too thin and the crown is much too high, making it look like you're wearing a felt traffic cone. It's also a general rule to have short(er) hair in order to wear a hat.

At the very least, button up your shirt.

On a side note, you're probably better off sporting a short-crowned homberg with a wide band to accentuate your narrow face. Get a haircut, get measured, throw in a decent, well-fitting coat and slacks and you can, realistically, pull it off.

But please, don't make it the defining piece of your outfit. A nice hat is an accessory, not a showpiece.

People used to wear hats to fit in
Now they wear hats to stand out
When you stand out all your flaws come under examination
This is why most people don't and shouldn't wear hats

no, taking off your hat compulsively the second you enter a building makes you look like a teenager who read one too many etiquette lists on ask.com

you take off your hat when you take off your overcoat, and you put it back on when you put on your overcoat. if you're standing in the lobby, buying groceries, or in an elevator, your hat had better be on your head, tool.

anyone who says differently doesn't have any business wearing a hat

It's not compulsive. It's polite and proper etiquette. Hats should be removed when in a building unless it's a public building (such as a mall or store) then it's ok.

In a residential elevator a hat should be removed, otherwise it's your choice.

Tipping when greeting is a nice gesture and hats should be removed when in the presence of lady.
