ITT: We discuss the fact that 90% of /fa/ are hipsters even though they claim to hate them. Not just any hipster though, the elitist variant.
Pic related: It's some fuckin hipsters
    >> Anonymous 09/01/11(Thu)20:07 No.3708222
    OP obviously doesn't frequent /fa/
    >> Anonymous 09/01/11(Thu)20:07 No.3708224
I can't even tell if this is trolling or not. I've been browsing /fa/ for some time and OP is kind of right.

    >Pic related: It's some fuckin hipsters
    Yeah, about that...

    >Not just any hipster though, the elitist variant.
That's the only kind there is. In fact, "hipster" is basically a synonym for "elitist."
    >> Anonymous 09/01/11(Thu)20:09 No.3708228
/fa/ isn't the kind of Thick glasses and wolf t shirt type though. They're the expensive ass grandpa clothes type.
    >> Anonymous 09/01/11(Thu)20:09 No.3708229
OP here, not trolling...look at the threads. Majority of it is hipster-ware / advice
    >hipster = elitist
no, only the /fa/ hipsters are elitists. Goto Brooklyn those hipsterfags don't think theyre elite

Not really. Hipsters are elitists, but not all eliteists are hipsters.

No, they're almost always one in the same. I mean, I guess if you're an elitist over what brand of dish soap you use, you might not be a hipster, but you will be for being an elitist over anything that might be swept up in culture/music/fashion/politics/etc.

Now to be more on topic, I don't mind dressing like a hipster. I just don't act like one. IRL nobody gives a fuck about people dressing like hipsters, actually women love it.

Being discerning in your tastes ≠ being elitist in your tastes

I like a Big Mac as much as I like a perfectly aged steak as much as I like a spinach salad, but I like them all for different reasons.

    >> Anonymous 09/01/11(Thu)20:27 No.3708272
/fa/ just follows trends. When /fa/ was created, everybody dressed in true skinny jeans and chunky glasses. Now hipster fashion is out, preppy style is in (or at least more than it usually is).
    >> Anonymous 09/01/11(Thu)20:27 No.3708273
Hey /fa/ do you spend ridiculous amounts of money on clothing because you can't get a date to spend the money on?
    Compensating?
    >> Anonymous 09/01/11(Thu)20:29 No.3708278
    >>3708272
Preppy style is now considered hipster style though.
    >> Anonymous 09/01/11(Thu)20:29 No.3708279
    >>3708273

I actually don't spend lots of money since I buy things wholesale. Why? Do you know people who shop as a means of therapy? It's not a very healthy (or fiscally responsible) habit to develop.
    >> Anonymous 09/01/11(Thu)20:30 No.3708280
    >>3708272
You've dispelled your own theory here. If preppy is the next trend and /fa/ only follows trends, then it doesn't follow that /fa/ has a long standing moratorium on a lot of the staples of a prep wardrobe: all madras, university striped oxfords, tweeds, etc.
    >> Anonymous 09/01/11(Thu)20:30 No.3708281
    >>3708278

And now you understand why the word "hipster" is completely useless in describing anything.

    Funny you mention /v/.

Three years ago, if you made a Halo thread, it would be sagebombed. Nowadays it's OK to like Halo because it's far less mainstream and popular than Call of Duty.

99% of them will deny being a hipster and use that shitty you don't know what that means image and mock CoD in the same post.

    Not really.
    >> Anonymous 09/01/11(Thu)20:33 No.3708289
    it's true
one of the main qualities of a hipster is to feel as unique as possible. Knowing other hipsters exist diminishes this self-righteous mentality which is why hipsters are hated by hipsters, it's self-preservation for those who have so little to offer the world other than being an individual.
    >> Anonymous 09/01/11(Thu)20:34 No.3708290

Prep is hardly the same now.

Skinny ties, small lapels (post 1960), slim fits, and dark wash jeans were inconceivable two decades ago until hipster fashion influenced prep.

To clarify, the same people who wore scarfs and chunky glasses five years ago now wear preppy business casual shit everywhere, a suit if they're really try-hard. The elitist mentality isn't exclusive to hipsters.
    >> Anonymous 09/01/11(Thu)20:34 No.3708294
I also don't get why /fa/ spends money on such overpriced items. You can get the same thing for about 1/6th of the price at H&M. If /fa/ follows trends why waste so much money on things that won't be cool in a year. I don't give a fuck if my pants are going to fall apart in a couple months because I'll just buy a cooler pair then.
    >> Anonymous 09/01/11(Thu)20:36 No.3708298
    >>3708294
Anything better than Banana Republic or J. Crew is overpriced designer stuff. If you can afford it, great, but you hardly need to fork out thousands too look good.

I stick with UO, H&M, and Gap myself.
    >> Anonymous 09/01/11(Thu)20:36 No.3708301
    >>3708294

The point of the trend isn't to follow it every single time it changes; it's to sift through all the trends and find stuff that speaks to your style and taste. That turns what would otherwise be a "trendy" piece into a staple for your own wardrobe and your own look. Style is what transforms a trend into a genuine look.
    >> Anonymous 09/01/11(Thu)20:38 No.3708305

    >> Anonymous 09/01/11(Thu)20:38 No.3708306
    >>3708298

But the point is that designer wear doesn't match your budget or your lifestyle right now, no? Nobody advocates just mindlessly burying yourself in credit card debt in order to buy the most expensive stuff you can. The best approach is to buy the best stuff that fits your life, which includes your taste, your activities, you budget, and other things. There's nothing wrong with buying from UO or H&M so long as those suit where you are in life and match what you are willing/able to spend on clothing.

Women wore Ugg boots and gladiator sandals. Men wore skin-tight jeans and no-show socks with dress shoes.

All of those shitty trends, and looking for "trendy" stuff is a bad mentality.

Thousands of tryhards thought no-show socks were a "staple of their wardrobe", and thousands of college sluts think Uggs appeal to their "style and taste".

I did read, and unless you work in the fashion industry, buying "trendy" stuff is a waste of time and money. I bet you bought those graphic wifebeaters from AA.

Does it speak to you? Does it work for your style? Given all the other clothing options out there, do you find this one more suitable to your tastes and lifestyle above all others? The point that was being made isn't that trendiness is a value, it's that discerning taste and sophistication can turn a trend into a personalized sense of style that resists the changing whims of the fashion industry at large.
