So, is anyone else absolutely pumped for the release of this thing? Personally I can't wait to get my hands one and start tinkering.

Seems it'd be a great thing to use to control just about any piece of machinery.

ok someone must have tried this or knows someone directly who has tried it. post comments.

Hydrogen is the way to go. Fuck that fuel cell disinfo we were told in the 90's that the only way to run a hyrogen car would be to carry a hydrogen bomb with us. That was crazy talk they got everybody to believe that's how hydrogen works. No you don't have a fuel cell, you spark it on the spot the hyrdrogen goes one way and you can ignite that and the oxygen goes another..the amazing thing is you can let these two elements reconstitute into water again and then ignite it AGAIN. The danger comes in running a car off water with Additives...don't need the whole world putting more shit into our water

    Hydrogen is not an additive.

It is the equivalent of adding an extra injector of gasoline to your gasoline engine.

If your engine is already running at stoich, you don't need more fuel.

    >implying 30-40amps is a problem

"Typical passenger car and light truck alternators are rated around 50-70A"

Alternators that put charge in the battery ready for when we want to turn the engine (by the starter motor) and start combustion are already putting out "50-70amps" while the engine is running.

Once the battery is fully charged up again the alternator is still producing current but most of its output is wasted because apart from the radio, lights or ignition system we dont need the extra power for anything else.

Strap another alternator (or multiple units) on the timing belt and you can double the output of electricity.

I own my own home and I built it myself. I have a 600Amp breaker box. I want to do arc welding and would like to know what the best wiring and size breaker(s) I should use.

I'm basically going to be making an outlet near the breaker box and using a homemade extension cord from there to the workshop in the next room. It'll be able to extend outside as well. I don't want to use wiring that would be going through the walls for welding.

True, but I'll have more than one transformer on it. Also, I plan on slapping aluminum heat sinks on them, bolting them in a metal container with heat sinks on its outside and filling that with mineral oil. That way only the breaker will trip if a rod gets stuck to something before I can hit the kill switch myself.

    >Although, if you're making one, I'd suggest being awesome and making an engine welder out of a lawnmower engine and a truck alternator.

How about making one from a wind turbine, massive PM motor, and a large battery bank?

    38 KB Throttle/Brake display Anonymous 01/25/12(Wed)23:17 No.131433   [Reply]
Working on a data acquisition system for my motorcycle. I want to incorporate two LED bar graphs; one for displaying percent throttle usage and on for percent brake usage. The throttle outputs a voltage increase as throttle is increased so coupled with a LM3914 it was easy to work out. The brake however outputs only an on/off voltage used for brake light illumination

My question for you is what would be a good way to translate brake usage into a voltage. What type of force transducer could I attache to the brake lever, could i use a pressure transducer inline with the brake lines to measure brake fluid pressure?

How do i build a generator out of scrap? I live on a small river in the middle of nowhere. I only work at shitty jobs to pay my power bill otherwise i enjoy my disabled retired fathers company who lives in a log cabin that me and him built. Walking distance from my bluff. I interact with the yuppy world just to pay the electric bill and get extra groceries or buy materials i can't find to build things out of. We enjoy gardening and once in a great while slaughter a cow for personal consumption. I build little robots in my spare time and help run art galleries for non profits. Anyways i'm sick of needing money to make money so i just want to use that infinate river energy

I live right by a low water bridge that is seldom used. It has three tubes that force water thru it. That could work. The state law in MO is if you own both sides of the river banks you own that portion of river but i do not i would have to talk to my neighbors who im sure will call me crazy but if i can give them some power as well i bet they would support me.

old washer motors, genius! if i exponentiate by having several of these barrels held on top of the water i could feasibly continue adding on until all our electricity needs are met? any pitfalls in this?

    >>131414
you can use old washer motors, yes. I made a wind generator out of one for my science fair years ago. I believe they have to be spinning quite fast for 12 volts though. You'd probably need quite a few for any reasonable amount of power. Also, Rather than having a barrel on top of the water (ugly, and it doesn't sound very efficient), I saw a picture once where someone had diverted some water away from the river wioth pipes and run it through a generator apart from the main river. Just a thought.

The motor out of a washing machine will output AC if used as a generator; but the frequency and voltage aren't likely to match what your electronics are used to getting from the grid on its own. Simple things like lightbulbs don't care; but anything more complex will. The frequency of the AC power will be a product of how fast the motor is spinning. Washing machines use three phase motors. So for 60 hz that's 1200 rpm (60/3 = 20 rotations per second). The voltage can be brought up or down with a transformer. A transformer is two coils of wire rapped around a common ferrite core. The ratio between the number of windings on each coil determines how much they step up or down the voltage; and inversely how much they step down or up the current.

Current tells you how many things you can run off your setup. A 40 Watt bulb running at 120 VRMS uses 0.33... amps. A generator outputting one amp at this voltage could power three of them.

I was thinking about using a small gas motor to drive

    Any Thoughts/Suggestions on the subject?
I have a background in Mechanics and Electrical,

shits missing so many branches of engineering. Also, goetech is a branch of civil. Industrial engineers are the tards of the group - it's basically a business degree with slightly more math. ME tend to be cooler while civil are more the snoody "i'm so responsible" types (they are technically legally liable for more than any other field). Chem tend to be "normal asian" types - not super nerdy. Computer Engineers/CS are surprisingly the funnest people i've worked with - underneath their very serious exterior. which leaves AE - yeah that one seems about right :)

One of you must know something about electronics, but I clearly don't. It's been a long time since high school electronics class, the schematic is roughly correct.

    - I have 4 leds in a circuit.
    - All of them used to light up.
    - Now 3 light solid, and one flashes like a strobe.

    What did I do?

    Your using resistors right?
    >> Anonymous 01/25/12(Wed)22:56 No.131405
I don't see anything in there that would make an LED strobe. That flashing one isn't an FLED is it? They look like regular LEDs but they have internal circuitry to make them flash.

Also that setup is likely to burn out your LEDs and does not balance the current going through them. You need current balancing resistors.
