    dear newcomers,

ITT: you need to make holiday presents for people because you suddenly realized you are broke.

Not crafty shit necessarily but projects for people last minute style.

    ex:
I am making a journal for my partner who is a writer, already made the journal but I'm building a leather pouch to attach to the front of it to hold pencils and crap.

    YOU tell us:

    who it's for
    what shit they do/like
    your abilities or skills

Maybe this will keep y'all from making a hundred "what do I make for everyone halp" threads.

I'll be here for about three hours to help you out; I am a giftmaking hero with a gazillion ideas, I have made every gift I've given for years and can think of endless things to make for people.

    bring it on

thinking of making some christmas themed coasters with some 4x4 white kitchen tiles I have laying around. Will water based paint work on them or do I need something else?

    >>97537
what is the tile surface like? if it's very shiny you may want to sand it rough before you paint.
if it's not glossy/shiny, you can probably use craft paints that are waterbased. make sure you put a good sealant coat on top

A coworker, I just met him a month and half ago so it doesn't have to be super personal
He likes gadgets and tech related things, so something practical probably.
I have some basic wiring experience, some wood working, and painting skills. I can tie knots things. Limited access to powertools, but I can sand, drill, cut, no prob.

    Anything interesting?

if you can get your hands on some polymer clay, maybe make something like this for him to hangcharge a gadget with:

well actually any clay would work. and you could do wood, so a wood box with a knotted cord that hangs might be cool too.

knot the rope/twine/leathercording/etc into a loop knot, so it can tie around the charger part that plugs into the wall

attach/tie on wooden box or pouch, if you make a little box type shape from like balsa wood even, one side higher to tie to

paint something funny on the box part

I'd make it big enough to fit a pocket sized gadget, so he could use it for whatever he's got.

    that help any?

    >>97554

so, what could I do for my gf?
she likes music and singing, she's a semi pro singer actually, she can play a bit of guitar and piano
also, she's known for taking very long showers
and she doesn't want anything for crimbo, but she's also a woman, so if I don't get her anything I'm she'll be bitching for a month

singer soften get dry throat. other than a series of blowjobs, you could get her some

    -really good organic lemon tea
-really good, organic dark raw honey
    -very nice mug

put it all in a cool container of some kind- what kind of stuff can you make? and give it to her for when her throat is sore.
the shit really works (I sing death metal and have been laughed at for drinking this shit at studio...but it fucking works)

for the container, what are you skilled at? can you sew or make a box?

Made some homemade presents this year, just with shit I've found in the local tip (enclosed shipping container for good shit - heaven)
I found an old book which was sweet and I had a little wood so I made it into a simple box and PVAd strips of the original pages over the wood and a woodcut from the book on the base.

I also found a plate of candle wax, so I melted it down in a saucepan and poured it into plastic bottles, cutting away the bottle when it set and using wick I had lying around.

Just use the shit you have, if you can't think up stuff to do out of your noggin use instructables and search for the stuff you have lying around and see if you can find inspiration.

make her a pocket painting/drawing kit.
altoids tin style. you need polymer clay to make the tiny color pots, and small pencils, and some plastic handled brushes.

    here's an instructable about these:

there are a ton of them listed in the side panel there too, if you know more about what mediums she likes you can alter the ingredients to suit her better

I've been thinking of what to get/make my parents. They appreciate things that I make no matter if they are shitty or not so that's the better route to go. Assume I have 1 week and relatively unlimited resources, including tool access (though a lathe or something might be an issue).

My dad likes books, the discovery channel, and not much else. He has started biking to work recently though.

My mom loves crafts and sewing, but I think she has everything she will ever need on that front. On the flip side, I can use all her stuff so I could make a craft with her sewing materials.

    They like to hike together.

Also bonus points if I can duplicate and throw it into a white elephant gift exchange (but that is entirely unnecessary)
    >> Anonymous 12/18/11(Sun)15:07 No.97632
    >>97630
for your dad, a bike drink holder might be good, to put on his bike. older folks get thirsty all the fucking time, so making a mount for his water bottle or whatever that fits on it would be good. you can make one out of like hose clamp stuff, then cover it with fabric so it matches his bike

for you mom why not make her something to organize her stuff that she uses more often. like a pouch for her scissors and markers and measuring tape, or even maybe make her a cool pincushion.

you could also make her a box for her threads, like a box with several sections to it so she can separate them out. she probably already has a ton of containers but a nice wooden case for stuff that YOU made might be something she'd like.
    >> Anonymous 12/18/11(Sun)15:10 No.97634
    >>97632
She has already made herself all that. In fact one of her favorite things to sew is organizational stuff for herself or her friends. She made me and all my friends a little sewing kit before we left for college. I like the idea though.

As for my dad, that might be a good idea. If you have any others, I would appreciate them. I will meditate on that though.

    I really appreciate the help.

if they hike together and have a camera you could also make her a camera pouch that can hang around her waist, or a better camera strap, with a wide padded top, if she doesn't have one.

    >>97634
what gear do they take hiking, too?

do they use walking sticks? do they have cameras and bottles and such for that>

mesh bags for drinking water bottles

you could also for your mom make her a whiteboard, get a cool frame and a photo of the two of you when you were a kid or soemthing that is way smaller than the frame. stick that picture in one corner and use white paper behind it. use a sheet of plexiglass as the glass in the frame and attach a few dry erase markers to one corner.

she can use it to write down shit for her crafting and see baby you all the time, moms love that shit

I was thinking a nice laminated case or something for a map, easily interchangable, so that they wont get lost when it rains. Maybe a scrapbook that they can add pictures or maps to as well. Something along those lines. Neither of my parents have a disposition towards photo taking and such.

as for my dad, I think a biking accessory will be best, but I just need to figure out what. I'm going to be going to the bike store for myself in the next few days so maybe that will yield some insight.

    Random suggestion for random anon:

If you are mildly computer/print/design inclined, make custom calendars for every one. Acquire one-page-per-month designs (I designed my own, but you could scan another calendar, or something). Print a set for each gift recipient.
Google image search each recipients' interests. Pick twelve good ones and print one on the back of each month (upside down). Alternatively, raid a photo album and use a dozen photos of the recipient's dog, or something.
Punch a hole in the bottom of each page, take to local business service place ad have them spiral bind each set. (not very /diy/, but I'm not doing *that* myself...)

A bit of effort, but worth it - everyone liked their custom calendars last year. After the first couple opened theirs, everyone was pretty keen to find out what their custom theme was.

ok idea- get an old dragon novel paperback with an epic cover.
get any old notebook- even a regular lined one- that has a flat binding like a regular book spine. you can get em at dollar stores for a buck
cut the novel cover to fit.
fold over an edge of it to hold a pen, like make a loop at the spine of it so there is enough extra space for a pen to fit in there
re-cover the notebook with the fantasy dragon fag madness

in the front write her a little love-you-hope-you-fill-this-with-writing note.

get a nice pen- a buck or two gets a decent one- and tuck it in the pen part by the spine.

you could also get one of those clear travel coffee mugs, and print out some epic dragon wizrd battle picture from the internet, and put it in there. but if you do that you will have to put a flower in it, to make it girl enough.

Might take you an hour or two.

Next go make one of those scan-to-url codes (can't remember the name) and print it out.

make him a card which is that in cut-out form (papercrafting styley)

    there's one gift

or, you could make him a caddy to go on the chair he sits in to game- like this kinda thing-

    http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hNrIg0pYdbs/SjJ2WLBbeXI/AAAAAAAABMg/75ZCxpUwe7k/s400/101_8796.jpg

but to fit his chair, and with pouches for things he always has around, like snacks, or a spare controller, or whathaveyou

if you do that, you could make it from canvas and paint it.

get some old timey hunting/fishing magazines. paint mod podge or shellac on all pages to stick the whole thing shut solid. one for the front, cut shorter and one for the back, a bigger one. then bend em so they make a big pocket.
drill two holes, one on each side of the back top. thread a thick hunk a twine through for hanging.

likes 4chan, do that picture, in messy style. make him pedobear and you in goldilocks costume.

takes some of the pressure off the perfectionism, still fits. bonus if you draw your own tits in it.

    >>98972

hell yeah get her the nutrient stuff. you might also want to make her a cooling towel for after-

you need a fucking shamwow to make one, but it's totally worth it. my sister does bikram and uses one every day afterward

basically you cut the shamwow fabric into a long strip, fold over into doubl thickness. it should end up being about four inches wide, as long as you like (hers are like a foot and a half long)

in the inside you put vermiculite, not overstuffed but enough to make a thin layer of the shit. then sew it along the edge, roll that edge over, and stitch it again. so it's a double hem on the ends and one side, to keep that shit inside

when she is going to yoga she soaks it in cold water. puts it in a baggie. when she is done with her bikram classes she puts it on the back of her neck to cool off.

after you are cool you just squeeze the water out and hang it up to dry til next time.

double bonus if you paint on om and her name on one side of it in fabric paint.

i think you could probably use thick chamois to make it too but I know my sister cuts up the fucking seen-on-tv cloths to make hers.

    >> Anonymous 12/19/11(Mon)22:32 No.98993
    >>98991
no it's just absorbent stuff they use in potting soil- the little white bubbles. you can get it anyplace they have potting soil usually.

You could probably also wrap the chamois around one of those pack though too. that'd make it even icier and nice.
    >> Anonymous 12/19/11(Mon)22:38 No.99003
    >>98993
doesn't that change size when warmed/chilled?
I'm definitely a low level /diy/nosaur, so I don't really understand what you think I should do. If you get sleeves of cloth and put this vermiculite stuff in, will it stay in or seep through?
    >> Anonymous 12/19/11(Mon)22:42 No.99006
    >>99003
it basically absorbs water and gets bigger, that makes the pack cooler.

BUT, I do think that it'd be easier to just sew a chamois towel cover for a bendable blue icepack like you said, and if it was ME making it instead of my sister, that is what I'D do, because it seems easier.

I'd make a cloth cover from chamois (to absorb sweat) and cover an icepack with it. make it neck sized, if you know what I mean- they're meant to wrap on the back of the neck.

and then do some fabric paint on one side, make it nice, something she's into. om if you can't think of anything else :)

I mean, the way I described is how I saw my sister make them, but the easiest is best when you're making the thing the first time, and you want her to be able to use it, so yeah.

my great-uncle can barely use a mouse. for his birthday, my brother and I built him his own internet basically. of course we got him the computer too (cheap-mode refurbished laptop with win7) and then made a custom desktop, links that say "NEWS", "FOOD", "HUNTING", basically an RSS for each thing he likes.

we go online once a week (taking turns) maintaining and adding new stuff to the feeds for him. been doing that for like a year now almost. he fucking loves it "THEY GOT ME AN INTERNET" lol oh uncle john

so yeah, I think with the right amount of effort and time, and willingness to go back to it and keep it up to date- for someone old it's nice.

-She's a professional doll artist, sculptor, writer and muralist. Hobbies are yoga, cooking and hiking.
-My DIY abilities are limited/specialized. I can do some basic tool work, sewing and make things explode. But I can learn basic things. Is a DIY gift doable?

hand muff. easiest thing to sew on earth. it's a tube, made of soft fake stuffed animal fur.
putting a needle through fabric is sewing, and with something like this it can be messy beginner sewing and still look ok since the fur hides it.
itll keep her hands warm too.
    http://laupre.wordpress.com/2008/11/25/the-big-red-muff-tutorial/

just do the sewing by hand. pick out the softest goddamn fur you can get at a fabric store, bonus if it's a color she wears all the time.

    >>100057

If you want to impress her, buy and make. two gifts, one bought one made.
you can make things explode? make her some kind of awesome explosion, seriously. she hikes and you can use tools- find a good dry staff, and make her a walking stick with a leather strap for her hand.

then buy her a really good, expensive bottle of gourmet balsamic vinegar. like hit up a farmer's market and look for the gourmet stalls. that and honey, the pricey dark raw local etc etc. two things most cooks LOVE and never buy the best of, but that buying the best of actually matters

you should have planned earlier if you wanted to get/make a truly impressive gift.

    and then buy her

I don't know if you're using an actual hardware screw, but the screw from a tripod adapter should only cost about $5 and is treaded to fit a camera properly, and they can easily be screwed in with a coin. I've made mounts with hardware-store screws before and it stripped out the treads so be careful.

Getting so desperate to put some more shit together, but pretty broke.

who it's for: mom, brother, dad

    what shit they do/like:
mom - knitting, jewelry, volunteers for ambulance, I think she likes hanging out with her friends or the neighbors for meals or whatever since she lives by herself now that me and my brother aren't here.
brother - cars... regular guy stuff? I don't know, I'm not really close to him.
dad - cars, he restores antiques, very difficult to buy for. probably regular guy stuff, I don't know either though, he's stressed out a lot and has all sorts of messed up drama in his life, I don't like talking to him much since he's always just ranting about what else is wrong now.

your abilities or skills: I can sew a bit, minimal knitting skills, fairly crafty in general, baking/cooking.

Also, I'm on a budget of about... $75

What is his favorite arc of Dragon Ball? which dragon ball is featured most prominently in this arc?
get a plastic orb, pain the requisite number of stars on it. get orange lighting gels or orange spray pain, and either cram the gels inside or spray the inside orange. Get an LED, and insert. make it so that when you flip a switch, the orb glows. You could make this as a lamp, or a cool thing that can sit on his desk, dependent on the size you want to make.
