Remember Battlebots? Maybe Robot Wars or Mechwars? These battle robot competitions were absolutely amazing to watch. And, in fact, they're still around and quite popular with hobbyists, even though they're entirely off TV.

So here's the thing--I found out that there are some lighter classes than what you used to see on TV. And supposedly it's what most of the hobbyists are building nowadays. 75g is an fleaweight, 1 pound is an antweight, and 3 pounds is a beetleweight. We should put our heads together and get some light robot concepts going in here.

I always hated that the bots with the most complex, awesome looking shit were nearly nonfunctional while the simple ass ones were the best.
    >> Anonymous 11/23/11(Wed)03:04 No.73060
    >>73058
Pretty true. More complexity means more things that can go wrong, and sensitive electronics being flipped all over the place by a wedge can really do more damage than you would think. Same goes for rammers.

I remember this one battle, where it was essentially a GIANT sawblade with wheels vs. a gyrobot with 3 spinning hammers going at super speed. One of the hammers connected with the side of the sawblade within the first few seconds and just demolished the other bot. I've always wondered how they could pair two bots together when it was so painfully obvious which one would win.

yeah the junkyard premise seemed a little tacked on. I don't think you can get a much better design than blendo. The only way you could win a match against it is if it had some sort of technical problem, and in that regard it was a very well sorted bot. Maybe a bit hard to control, but you don't really need to have that much control over it.

I mean, it's a big spinning wedge. It's got a gas motor for the dome so it doesn't suck down batteries, and doesn't have the finicky drive systems of your disc/barrel bots, but it still has stupid offense. The sides (I hesitate to call them skirts) are pretty low and that combined with the teeth on the bottom makes it pretty much impossible to get under, and I doubt you could go through the top even if you could safely get within range.

Let me think of some other notable ones...

    >Nightmare/any other vertical disc since they are all the same
I always liked these because they were fun to watch when they were driven right, but they all had shitty shit defense, not to mention every time we've seen those damn belts break and the whole thing become useless.
    >Wedges/rammers/simple lifters
How good these are is entirely dependent on how well the internals are designed. Otherwise as long as you have low ground clearance, self righting/runs upside down and enclosed wheels, it's a good design.
    >That one in battlebots with the three horizontal spinning hammers and the crawler feet
I can't spell their name, and don't feel like looking it up because I always got the impression that the team was run by the world's biggest cunt. Matching uniforms? Using crawler feet to get by regulations?

Oh, and I know I'm not the only one here that watched robotica.

The six-legged Mechadon was pimp. The only thing wrong with it is that the guys seemed to spend more effort on designing it than learning to pilot it to its fullest potential.

I noticed that a lot, actually. Really solid designs would fail due to operator clumsiness that could have been ironed out with a bit more practice time at the controls.

    1. Plan as in draft your design with your specifications, you could do this by hand or if you had a fancy computer program to do this you could do that aswell, also you should probably have a think tank for this stage, find some dudes that are good with mechanics and shit

    2. Prototype it

    3. If it works build it for reals

    4. Trial and error, see what works and what doesnt

    5. More trial and error

The motors would be spinning in opposite directions as the offensive/defensive tactic, so the bot would spin about the axis. Turn the motors as you would any tank bot to move. The wheels should be larger and closer together for better defense, but idgaf, I'm on my phone. Just jam the controllers and antenna anywhere about the motor/battery body.

They've got some all-right resources for people starting out. Mostly British, but good info. Really, once you get the basics (how to build something that moves and can be controlled by you), you start experimenting. I built a little Nightmare clone.

Being sixteen at the time, I didn't think to properly design it. The axle holding the blade in place snapped, and the disc shot off and nearly broke the safety cage. It was hilarious. Then his wireless controller got fried, so I junked him and never built another.

Damn. Now I want to form a group and participate in this, but I have no idea how to go about creating a group or finding competitions or anything.

Step 1. Think of a clever name.

    Step 2. Make forums.

Step 3. Gather interest from here, /g/, /m/, etc.

    Step 4. Wait.

Step 5. Users have robots and can now find each other locally.

    Step 6. Host tournaments.

Titanboa needs to get polished up with a more effective and powerful drive system, and then have a go at it

Well, not a battlebot, but sure looks like one:

The Chum Chucker, a robot designed for the FIRST FRC 2010 competition, Breakaway.

120 pounds of pure badass orange. Kicked soccer balls with an approximate arc height of 16 inches, with a pneumatic kicker mechanism. Drives pretty damn fast too, at roughly 12 feet per second at it's max speed. He's also able to climb steep grades of up to 45 degrees.

    He. Will. Fuck. You. Up.

    Oh, forgot to mention:

I did help build him. I installed the electrical systems on the machine, while a friend of mine did most of the plumbing.

I was also a backup driver for Chummy, who is just so freaking easy to use.

I see what you mean, but wouldn't being a sphere leave it prone to just falling to one side?

A case can be added to cover the internals, but I left it our for clarity. I'd probably go with a slightly smaller rubber ball hollowed out if weight/heat would allow for it. If spike weapons still prove to be an issue, kevlar should help with impact resistance.

I wouldn't want the balls touching, though, because that would be gay.

Chaos 2 was always a shit load of fun to watch. If I remember correctly it was the first robot to flip another out of the arena in robot wars, then its signature finishing move was to flip the other nigga out the arena. Then people started to build self-righting robots.

    >> Anonymous 11/23/11(Wed)21:58 No.73743
    >>73736
    Well, yes, and no.

We had an arm ready for an off season competition in Indiana (IRI) and got to use it.. twice.

The first time, we started the lift before time ran out, and the second time it lifted all the way... then fell, killing the cRIO.

Another team was kind enough to lend us theirs though, a good thing too, because that allowed us to continue playing.

Ah, yeah. Our arm worked about as well. We hung once, but doing so broke our hanging mechanism pretty badly. The hang was the best thing to happen to us that year though.

I wish finding a team to do battlebots type stuff was as easy as finding a FIRST team though.

What do you think would be the legality of a wedge-type bot with a cutter at the top of the ramp, ala Jaws of Life?

The bot would get up under the opponent and push them against the wall, then activate the jaws, crushing/cutting the opponent bot
    >> Anonymous 11/24/11(Thu)00:09 No.73877
A wedge bot with a vertical buzzsaw ontop.

    Fuck yes or fuck yes?

I seem to recall one nasty bot with a single overhead swinging pike powered by a garage door spring. You got hit with that thing, game over.
    >> Anonymous 11/24/11(Thu)01:40 No.73923

yeah that seems like a pretty good design, I wonder if you could use hydraulics or compressed air and make it even stronger
    >> Anonymous 11/24/11(Thu)08:34 No.74084
Did any of you ever actually read the rules for competition in Robot Wars? There were weight classes, and you could go over weight classes if you were a walking/bi-pedal bot Vs. an efficient four wheeled one.

Sir Killalot was a house robot, but he wasn't just grandfathered in because of it. Once you get to Super Heavyweight class, the only thing limiting your robot's weight is the ability to fit through the doors. Literally. If you could create a robot efficient and powerful enough to be made of lead and fit through the doors, it could lay over on other robots and just crush them.

You also could not use projectiles. No nail guns, no thermite, no adhesives, no magnetic weapons. Any projectiles had to be tethered to your bot. So, you could have a lasso using robot, or a net firing robot. But not a thermite, glue or acoustic blaring robot.

You could also make Composite Bots. That is, more than one person could steer more than one robot on one team, but the two robots could not go over the weight class. Effectively halving your weight/power but doubling the actions your team could take.

Batteries, liquid coolants/fuels/lubricants had to be positioned and protected to where they wouldn't leak all over the ring, creating engineering challenges for bot hygiene.
    >> Anonymous 11/24/11(Thu)08:43 No.74088
I wish I had the money for this stuff. I had a nice theory for a sure-fire win bot.

It's a Combo-bot. Two autonomous robots that are attached to the same body. Completely legitimate for the Robot Wars rules, as so long as the bot can fit through the doors, it meets super-heavyweight status. And if it's on legs and not treads or wheels, that effectively doubles even the liberal status. So theoretically a super-super heavyweight could fight in the medium or heavyweight leagues.

The bottom half would be tank treaded, I'm thinking. Built like a bulldozer or a crane. Lots of room and mass for hydraulics.
The top half would be a humanoid torso. The hands and wrists would be outfitted with finger individual hydraulic claws, with heavy heavy armoring on the forearms and elbows.

In theory the manual dexterity, the deflecting defenses, the ability to reach, grab, squeeze, poke, push, pull and flip an enemy bot would make it very much like a gorilla on treads Vs. anything. The super-heavyweight status being only to add counterweights and to fit in an oversized, overdeveloped hydraulic claw power system.

Good luck getting the controls and electronics for those arms to work properly without breaking when some disc bot comes up and slaps your shit.

It would be weighted as to always return to it's wheels if it's knocked over. furthermore the outward facing spades on the spikes would allow of a weapon that is impossible to avoid while attacking. the hemispheres would rotate in different directions at maximum rpm. the effect would be little different than 2 spinning sawblades in an "orbit" around the sphere.
    Sry for late reply
