Is working a trade a good job? Particularly as an alternative for a burned out college student who makes mediocre grades and still has two years of school left?

If so which ones and why?
    >> Anonymous 04/25/12(Wed)21:59 No.205339
Lots of trade jobs pay more than a BS degree'd equivalent. Want to make a living? Just go for something like... plumber or HVAC/Refrigerator repair... I can't believe how much non-DIY people shell out.

    OP, are you me?

Currently, I'm an Environmental Engineering major because the subject matter interests me but it turns out I'm completely garbage at the higher maths and design calculation aspect (you know, the engineering part). I'm fairly good with my hands but I'm not even sure where I should start for trade training.

Go through apprenticing and the proper courses, become a registered Journeyman, and you won't have a hard time finding good work.
Machinist, Electrician, Plumber, all skilled trades are in need right now because most of the tradesmen are old and retiring and there aren't many to replace them.

Does it make sense to walk away when I've got 20k in student debt? Should I try and switch to a liberal arts major(most likely philosophy cause im good at it) and graduate in one year, than look into the trades so I could get an actual job?

Or should I suck it up and try and finish my science major, even if it means retaking classes like general chem?

A liberal arts major is absolutely worthless. The only job you're going to get with a philosophy major is cashier.

But a science degree with shitty marks is not much better because employers pick the graduates who stand out. If you're not top of your class, you need something else that will put your resume at the top of the stack, such as relevant work experience.

If you can't graduate with a useful degree AND stand out, then cutting your losses and following through in a skilled trade might be a good option.

For the love of god, don't switch to some bullshit liberal arts major. They're completely useless in the real world. What the fuck are you going to do with a philosophy degree? Wipe your ass with it?

Even if you decide to drop out of college to pursue a trade, it will be a much, much better decision than getting a liberal arts degree. I promise.

I was a "burned out college student" once.

I dropped out of engineering school and became a fireman (ended up getting an advanced degree later on). Took a little while, but I work on a busy company in a big city, and I really enjoy it.

Is it a skilled trade? I dunno. But for a guy like me, it sure beats looking at numbers all day!

Currently a 2nd year welder. I enjoy it. All my buddies are in the trades. Should look into power engineering, thats a swell gig.

Welders where I live make 35-50/hour, depending on the place and the work. If you have your own welding rig and hit the patch, you can make 100+/hour easy.

    fitter/welder here,
i second this, but if you get into welding you MUST learn to TIG.
FCAW contractors are making 22/hr plus Per Diem, TIG welders are making 35/hr plus Per Diem in my shop.
