    >That feel when you see crown vic headlights roaring up behind you on the highway

    >That feel when it turns out to be a taxicab

Crown Vics are no longer manufactured, but are still in service almost everywhere.

Ford's moving the "Police Interceptor" name over to a police package for their new version of the Taurus. It's built so that cop equipment originally designed for the crown vic (i.e. radios, computers, light bars, etc) can be moved directly over, and powertrain-wise it's basically a modern SHO.

I haven't seen any out in the wild yet, though. My local, county, and state forces are all still using fleets primarily made up of Crown Vics. WA State Patrol has some unmarked Impalas for their aggressive driving team, and Seattle uses faintly-marked Chargers for the same purpose. WA State and King County both use Expeditions as their 4x4, although the county still has a couple battered Cherokees in service. Seattle uses crew cab F350 diesel duallys as their 4x4. They do double-duty as tow rigs for Mounted.

    Here in NE Alabama they are using Chargers, Tahoes, and the new Camaro as Highway interceptors;
I bought a decommissioned Vic at the auto auction for $200 a few years back, ran great, despite having 200k miles on it.

you know that decomissioned cop cars run so great even with the high mileage cause when they are in service, they are well maintained and repaired professionaly by the police departments fleet repair facilities. because cop cars have to be able to run without breaking down so most likely those cars have alot of replaced parts and perhaps a few engine rebuilds depending on the stress the cars have endured over their life. so you might be getting a sweet ass car for that $200 despite the mileage.

Speaking of police vehicles, this one is straight from my hometown.

Lemme see if I can find a better picture.

    And I can't. Oh well.

I saw it in person a few times and it was gloriously awful.

I live in Minnesota and I haven't seen a Crown Vic in service for about 5 years. There are tons of decommissioned cars on the roads. Those always piss me off. They are pretty sweet cars though. Expertly maintained.

Most decommissioned crown-vic cop cars are bought up by taxi companies. Then they're mercilessly flogged until they reach the age limit for taxicabs (7 years in most cities), at which point they're sold for sub-$1000 prices with half a million miles on them.

Some cities (most notably NYC) require taxicabs to be purchased new or require them to be no older than 3 years. Which means that civilians can still usually buy decommissioned cop cars.

The classic RWD caprice cop car was discontinued so long ago that no one has them in service.

The new police-package caprice is actually a reskinned Pontiac G8 with police-spec suspension/drivetrain, and it's supposed to perform VERY nicely. However I haven't seen any agencies using them yet, they haven't been on the market long at all.

Crown Victoria is still the staple police car in Canada.

Vancouver tried using other smaller cars donated by the manufacturers, but it didnh't take.

In Toronto and I believe Quebec City a couple of LAV III's have been introduced.

    Me Gusta.

Those were most likely drug seizures that were put into service as pursuit vehicles rather than being auctioned. That's common practice for many agencies. It's unlikely they were part of a fleet order.
