85 KB Shipping Container can stop EMP blasts Anonymous 02/22/12(Wed)01:55 No.157263
So according to one doomsday moron, a shipping container can protect you from an EMP blast. Wait, what?

He is correct. Its a Faraday Cage. Throwing your electronics into a microwave, fridge, or any other metal box will also do the trick. These doomsday scenarios where every piece of electronic equipment on Earth fries are a little silly.

Plus he plans on having 6 feet of earth thrown on the roof. Um, NOPE.

You guys obviously missed one key point of the conversation; they guy is gonna bury the containers into the ground.

Hmmm, what was discussed here in length on /diy/ about back-filling a shipping container with earth?

FUN FACT: cars are highly resistant to EMPs, in military tests of civilian vehicles it was found that at the highest EMP intensities, the worst that happened was that lights on the dashboard would annoyingly blink. Permanently

i've seen a video where a car was disabled using EMP

unless you're driving a Model T, i wouldn't put much faith in that

    >>157367
Bull-Fucking-Shit. /o/ here, an EMP would fry a car's essential electrics. The only way to avoid this would be to use a diesel engine with MFI and some kind of crank start.

/o/ and /k/ are somewhat good neighbours, and we have discussed SHTF scenarios with them.
    >> Anonymous 02/22/12(Wed)09:15 No.157513
    >>157418

It all depends on the power of the EMP and the range. The body panels and frame of a car, if made of metal, do act as a fairly good Faraday cage. That and all the other metal bits that tend to be in between the cars computer and the outside shield is pretty well. If the EMP is powerful enough or makes direct contact with the car it will disable it. The US government has been researching the second method for years as a was to disable cars safely that they are perusing. They have a working model that can be mounted in a standard police cruiser but it requires the officer to come in contact with the other vehicle to disable it. So, based on the cost, the danger of touching a car at high speed and the amount of use it will get most places have shown less than stellar interest.
    >> Anonymous 02/22/12(Wed)09:20 No.157515
    >>157513

Forgot to mention one other thing. All the metal in a car also tends to suck up a fair amount of the power of an EMP before the electronics get fried. This, and not because the car has rubber tires, is why its recommended you get in a car in a lightning storm. Just keep off any metal bits or you'll get fried too.

Is anyone even believing this show? Looks like many of these morons will either be starving once the food runs out, a/or have no fucking idea what they're prepping for.

Also, kinda stupid to reveal on NATIONAL TV that you have a stockpile of food, supplies, and guns sitting on your property. Guess where hundreds, if not thousands of folks will go to once SHTF?

I was rather amused by the liberal New England douches who completely refused to arm themselves. They actually believe that, if someone wanted their (admittedly good) stockpile of food, they would be able to negotiate their way out of it...
    >> Anonymous 02/24/12(Fri)21:03 No.159848
The car as a Faraday cage is correct. If you are in your car during an electrical storm, you can pull over, and just not touch anything metal. One woman had her car hit by lightning, and she came out OK. The car's rear window was shattered, and her key was welded into the lock.

This is the world's largest wooden structure. It is at Kirkland AFB, and is used to test aircraft by subjecting them to EMPs.

This thing is enormous, and has no metal in it at all. It is held together with wooden pegs. Some master carpenter had to design it.

When I saw it, they had an entire B-52 up on the platform.
    >> Anonymous 02/25/12(Sat)10:11 No.160249
The biggest problem with DIY Faraday cages is getting a good door seal. To do this, the door has to make good electrical contact with the door frame all the way around the door.

In our TEMPEST vault (a room-sized Faraday cage), the doorframe is lined with beryllium-copper fingers that make electrical contact all the way around the door. NEMA EMI-resistant industrial enclosures use the same trick. It keeps the EMP out, but also makes the door a bitch to close.
    >> Anonymous 02/25/12(Sat)10:21 No.160252
I have a question about EMP that I'm sure one of you can answer: would it effect devices that weren't powered at the time of the pulse? For example if I have a radio that doesn't have any batteries in it, will it still not work?
    >> Anonymous 02/25/12(Sat)10:22 No.160253
    >>160241
That looks like an electronic ignition system failure. I'm sure if you had anything with carbs and mechanical ignition you could start it, at worst push start it.

    >>160252
powered doesn't matter, an EMP induces currents which destroy the circuits. That's the point.

The top and sides will cave in. Only the edges are meant to take stacking weight. Not the middle of the top nor the sides. think of a shipping container without the metal panels at all. It'll look like this pic. There are a few supports more than this, but this is the basic thing. The rest is just window dressing so to speak.

Use giant culvert pipe instead. It is meant to be buried deeply.
