Jobs, mostly. Depending on the con, staffing is pretty helpful at cutting costs too... Larger cons will usually offer you hotel room and free badges, along with other shit. Depending on what department you're signed up with, the work could pay for itself or not be worth it at all. The latter case seems pretty rare, though.

That aside, I do shit in the artist's alley too. At the very least, that pays for my pocket money in addition to covering most of my convention costs.

Doing comissions pays for my costumes. Doing the registration ahead of time helps disperse the costs. Hotels, I try to split with a lot of people, but still comfortably.. and if at all possible go to cons close to a home (so anything in Philadelphia and NY, I can stay at either place).
Travel expenses.. again carpool, borrow an EZpass. Pack food in a cooler! This part really saves me a ton.

Besides a job, I split room costs with a group of people and usually either work for a vendor (covers the badge and food), or in the AA, in which I'll usually cover the cost of the con and then some.

I staff; saves asstons of money and I still spend all my time in the game room fagging off and running tournaments.

My family is rich so I can easily dish out 3-5k(or more if needed) for a Convention.

Sharing the room is really the best way to go. Now I probably shouldn't recommend packing more than four people into a room, or whatever amount the hotel normally has as a max, but...

Another way to score a little cash; if you drive but your friends don't, drive them and charge them something realistic for gas.

Also, if organizing a room for a group, use rounding to your advantage. Also, calculate sales tax on the room before splitting up the cost. Sales tax on hotel rooms can be quite high, as much as 10 or 11 percent.
