There where do people like Old Greg, Dr. Who, TF2 classes, Venture Brothers, Ghostbusters, etc. go? You can't just say D*C when anime has invaded every other con over the years. Cosplay is cosplay and to be so butthurt over seeing a few comic characters among the hordes of Kingdom Hearts fuckery is exclusive nonsense. Especially when the non-anime cosplayers are clearly enjoyed by the con attendees.

Plus, when Otakon has guests like Peter S. Beagle, who has only a tenuous relationship with manga (he's mainly fantasy and Star Trek stuff), you know that the distinctions between anime/manga and other popular geek culture are going to be blurred.

Anime Conventions aren't just anime conventions anymore. It's a place for movies, internet memes, and anything else anyone likes.

American Comic cosplay is already banned from the hall cosplay, and I think that's a legit decision since it is an anime con.

Just anyone who is going to bitch about having american comic cosplay at an anime con is fucking retarded. You see anime costumes at comicons. We're all dressing up in costumes anyway, so why care?

Eh, >>3488 has it right. Let the anime cons keep the cosplay contests to anime, but allow whoever on the floor. The culture borderlines are pretty blurry, especially when properties such as Final Fantasy merge with Disney. And when one of the major guests is known for The Last Unicorn, Lord of the Rings, and Star Trek.

As for comic-con attitudes... I think the subset of anime fans who appreciate western stuff is pretty large... but the subset of primarily comic fans who also dig anime is pretty small. Which is too bad.
