Ma-Ma's not the Law /co/

I am the Law

Dredd General.

It was fucking brilliant, if you haven't already, watch it in a cinema, it needs a sequel.

The best Judge Dredd was Doug Walker in To Boldly Flee

Hell yes, it felt like a story arc straight from the comics.

Frank probably would have become a Judge, he'd have to be a lot less murderous though, no more killing pimps and the like, although I guess he could get away with it by charging them with attempted murder of a Judge when they attacked him

Apparently, if it gets a sequel, Judge Death and the other Dark Judges will make an appearance.

The film seemed mostly realistic though, so how could they pull that off? the only thing that was really out there was Judge Anderson being a Psychic Mutant.
>>
It NEEDS a sequel.

God, the music, environment, everything.

Bloody brilliant.
When the traitor judges get utterly destroyed I was just sitting bolt upright in my seat silently mouthing "YES YES YES"

Plus that Anderson...god damn she was amazing.

>>40782102
No Death will be the 2nd sequal. Judge Cal is rumoured for 1st sequal.
>>
>>40782056
6 more days from my end. Can't see it at midnight. Makes the wait THAT much more depressing.
>>
>>40782136
I know what you mean, that scene where Dredd IMMEDIATELY knows the Judge is corrupt, then proceeds to crush his throat with his nightstick was fucking awesome
>>
Great film. Only major gripe was the Lawmaster looking a tad crappy. But overall brilliant. I mean even the 3D didn't suck. It wasn't overused, but it was always there to gives scenes that depth of field effect and making certain elements 'pop'.

After reading bits of Dredd here and there, the film has convinced me to take the plunge and start collecting the Dredd case files. Got the first three on the way now.

>>40781947
>Punisher
>good judge
Debatable. 2000AD Judges get to execute on the spot if it's in accordance with the law, so depending upon the specifics of Megacity law and whether or not it coincides with Frank's own vision of justice would be the deciding factor.

The film industry needs more like this, more films that know what they need to be and are capable of respecting their source material while still having an identity and being GREAT.

They mentioned that they'd go for full-on horror/supernatural Dark Judges, and I think that's the best way to go. Dunno about the alternate dimension thing, but they could easily work as an otherworldly, monstruous threat. Maybe the movie could start with Anderson getting psychic flashes of them, nobody believing her (making her name more apt) except Dredd, and then the Dark Judges do come and it's every drokker for himself.
>>
>>40782170
Dredd ends up in Gotham. What happens?
>>
Enjoyed the movie a lot, particularly liked them not going into a soppy back story for him and just having him as a badass with a gun. Did well to avoid any sort of romantic shoehorn too.
>>
>>40782102

I'm guessing the Dark Judges won't be in it until a theoretical part three and they'll build up to that level of absurdity.

I heard a few interviews where he talks about riding down the streets in the Lawmaster, all decked out in the suit and helmet (which he wore throughout the entire shooting, to get in character), and he really was Living The Dream. Motherfucker's probably a bigger Dredd fanboy than most of us.

>>40782409
The Cursed Earth, The Day The Law Died, The Judge Child Quest, the Apocalypse War (with Block Mania as prologue), Oz, The Pit, Total War, Origins, Mutants in Mega-City One, Tour of Duty, and America.
America is pretty much the quintessential Dredd story, though I'd recommend reading a bit more on him before going into it.

Anywho, just get the Case Files if you're interested. They're awesome.

Yes, I got that feeling from the film that they really had covered all aspects. I just hope that in the sequels they don't lose their mojo.

I hear audience members in the cinema asking "what is resyk(I don't recall how to spell it)" and such. Was a bit amusing.

Anyone else notice the Chief Judge was a black woman? An interesting choice.

I don't understand your mindset here since this is a different director, different cast, different anything besides the source material.
>>
>>40782881
>Man, that whole soundtrack is something else, ain't it?

I was sorta disappointed that they didn't use the original soundtrack which was a Carpenter-esque lo-fi synth soundtrack but goddamn it blew every expectation out of the water. It's equal parts bad-ass and equal parts scary as shit.

It seems to be Race and Gender isn't really important in the Judge Dredd future, People seem to discriminate more based on Class and genetics, mainly poor people and the Mutants.

He's scarred to Hell and back thanks to decades of law enforcement, but the main reason is that he's pretty much the perfect Judge, the embodiment of inhuman, faceless and ruthless authoritarism. He's the platonic ideal, and even though he's kiiiinda mellowed out a little nowadays, he's still The Law.
All signs point to him being bald, tho'.

I'm not a Dredd reader, my only knowledge came from the Stallone movie and a batman crossover. Went to see it with a few friends and we were all hugely impressed.

The only person that wasn't impressed, was a guy that's actually a fan of Dredd, and read his comics for 20 years.

Is this the case for anyone else? Any non fans love it and fans criticize it? To be fair, his criticism was really nitpicky (they needed breathing apparatus instead of it being built into the helmet like in the comics.)

It's... weird. I have a few color reprints from Titan of a few stories from her first term as Chief Judge and she's very black, though more indian than african. Necropolis and onwards she does get whiter, but I dunno which one she was supposed to be.
Maybe the radiation whitened her out, like Michael Jackson!

Fa/tg/uy here, Judges have a Vow of Celibacy. Its actually something Dredd has flunked rookies on before. There is a Judge Dredd Role Playing game adventure called 'Full Eagle Day' in which the players are actually being overseen by Judge Dredd himself to see if they are worthy of their Full Eagles. There is a part in which the characters are tempted with sex and if any of them give in, Dredd fails them right then and there.

I don't mean it in the derogatory sense, I mean it in that the female characters are portrayed as strong and equal to the men (i.e. Anderson being a realistically inexperienced rookie who is still competent, Ma-Ma a ruthless villain who gets her ass kicked like a man would etc.).

Black and white, except for the occasional color double-page spread. They got recolored for international reprints and some collections, and later down the road they started being colored all the time. Nowadays, B&W is still used if the story fits tho'.

Yes. But Dredd still shits on both of them in terms of actual skill and bad assery.

Nicholas Winding Refn is doing Strontium Dog as well.

Wonder who they would get for Johnny Alpha. If they were casting someone who would be all over the character like Karl Urban was, it would be Simon Pegg. But I'm not sure if I could buy him as Alpha.

Judge Anderson isn't strong, but she's agile and shoots a bunch of people, and in one scene, makes a dude piss himself by using his psychic powers on him to interrogate him

From what I've seen Anderson is exactly what you described, and same with Ma-Ma. But I do think it's important to mention that Judge Dredd the comic is hella feminist as well. They've had two female Chief Judges so far, female Judges are trained and treated equally as the men, and characters like Anderson are allowed moments of true femineity (showing emotion, caring, even loving) without becoming less badass for it. Of course, they're still fascist totalitarian jackbooted supercops, so grain of salt I guess?
>>
>>40783432
Supposedly, an early Script that also featured Judge Death had Dredd and Anderson kissing in the end.

Urban and Travis agreed to cut it.

That word either means that women can be and should be treated as equals. Or it is a way for women to hate men.
>>
>>40784108

It's a movement demanding equal rights for women. If the female characters in this movie are treated equally to the male characters, then it can be considered feminist. That's not a bad thing.
>>
>>40784133
>...its ok to like badass female psuedo-fascist futurecops.

Alex Garland hated it but it was insurance so an American production company might pick it up (Because they are suckers for that kind of thing). Luckily it was a joint venture between a UK, Indian and South African company that funded the movie

Once they got on set, it was pretty much purged from the script.

Also, seconding the love for the "Just another day in the office" plot. What really makes it great is that, while this is just a routine day for Dredd, it's also Anderson's most important day of her carreer, making her carry the more emotional depth of the story and giving Dredd more space to kick ass and take names. If the reviews are anything to go by, then they got it right as rain.

War in general. Dredd's world has already been through World War III. While the movie doesn't say it, the Cursed Earth being a radioactive wasteland and Anderson being a mutant due to radiated parents imply it.

War between the Mega-Cities has occurred on more than one occasion in the comic, and many blocks have 'in case of war' defences, depending on age. Depending on the time the story is set, many blocks even had "Citi-Def" units, volunteer reservist soldiers who do like, one day's training a week.

Only if you're an immediate danger to the lives or wellbeing of others, or if you are a highly-wanted previous offender who has escaped justice and failed at rehabilitation.

If Dredd went to arrest Joker for murder, and it was the first time he'd been arrested, it would go one of two ways:
a) Joker resists arrest or presents immediate threat - Dredd shoots him, probably a killshot.
b) Joker comes quietly - Psycho-Cubes.

If Joker escapes and commits another serious crime, the chances of him being shot out of hand escalate rapidly.

No Judge will straight-up execute a surrendering crim on the spot without full knowledge of the case. If the surrendering perp is judged to be too dangerous to live, then yeash, the Judge will execute them in a heartbeat.

Visually it's a bit more old-fashioned, but also very dark and opressive, kinda like turn of the century London. Its Justice Department is more geared towards investigation and tends to be more relaxed and lenient than MC-1's. However, they also tend to be more corrupt, not through bribes from drug-dealers and such but from payments and favors to a high-class aristocracy that still kinda rules the city. It's like bureaucratic corruption, so to say. Don't kick up a fuss, old bean, and everything will turn out nice again.

Dredd obeys the law. In Gotham, the law does not allow you to shoot a suspect or confirmed criminal unless they are endangering your or another's life. Additionally, as Dredd is not a member of the GPD, he is not authorized to act as the law and will not break the law by committing an act of vigilantism.

Mind you, Dredd obeys Mega-City One's Law. Gotham law doesn't worry him one bit. If Joker threatened either Dredd or a citizen of Mega-City One, he'd be compelled to act. And attacking a judge is a life sentence, one way or another.
