The film seemed mostly realistic though, so how could they pull that off? the only thing that was really out there was Judge Anderson being a Psychic Mutant.

Great film. Only major gripe was the Lawmaster looking a tad crappy. But overall brilliant. I mean even the 3D didn't suck. It wasn't overused, but it was always there to gives scenes that depth of field effect and making certain elements 'pop'.

After reading bits of Dredd here and there, the film has convinced me to take the plunge and start collecting the Dredd case files. Got the first three on the way now.

Debatable. 2000AD Judges get to execute on the spot if it's in accordance with the law, so depending upon the specifics of Megacity law and whether or not it coincides with Frank's own vision of justice would be the deciding factor.

The film industry needs more like this, more films that know what they need to be and are capable of respecting their source material while still having an identity and being GREAT.

They mentioned that they'd go for full-on horror/supernatural Dark Judges, and I think that's the best way to go. Dunno about the alternate dimension thing, but they could easily work as an otherworldly, monstruous threat. America is pretty much the quintessential Dredd story, though I'd recommend reading a bit more on him before going into it.

Thirlby was amazing in the role.

I'm not a Dredd reader, my only knowledge came from the Stallone movie and a batman crossover. Went to see it with a few friends and we were all hugely impressed.

The only person that wasn't impressed, was a guy that's actually a fan of Dredd, and read his comics for 20 years.

Is this the case for anyone else? Any non fans love it and fans criticize it? To be fair, his criticism was really nitpicky (they needed breathing apparatus instead of it being built into the helmet like in the comics.)

It's... weird. I have a few color reprints from Titan of a few stories from her first term as Chief Judge and she's very black, though more indian than african. Necropolis and onwards she does get whiter, but I dunno which one she was supposed to be.

From what I've seen Anderson is exactly what you described, and same with Ma-Ma. But I do think it's important to mention that Judge Dredd the comic is hella feminist as well. They've had two female Chief Judges so far, female Judges are trained and treated equally as the men, and characters like Anderson are allowed moments of true femineity (showing emotion, caring, even loving) without becoming less badass for it. Alex Garland hated it but it was insurance so an American production company might pick it up (Because they are suckers for that kind of thing). Luckily it was a joint venture between a UK, Indian and South African company that funded the movie

Once they got on set, it was pretty much purged from the script.

I hope that if they ever get to the Dark Judges (and I hope they will) it'll be lots of practical effects. Animatronics, dudes in suits and the like.

Also, seconding the love for the "Just another day in the office" plot. What really makes it great is that, while this is just a routine day for Dredd, it's also Anderson's most important day of her carreer, making her carry the more emotional depth of the story and giving Dredd more space to kick ass and take names. If the reviews are anything to go by, then they got it right as rain.

War in general. Dredd's world has already been through World War III. While the movie doesn't say it, the Cursed Earth being a radioactive wasteland and Anderson being a mutant due to radiated parents imply it.

War between the Mega-Cities has occurred on more than one occasion in the comic, and many blocks have 'in case of war' defences, depending on age. Depending on the time the story is set, many blocks even had "Citi-Def" units, volunteer reservist soldiers who do like, one day's training a week.

I am hoping that 2000AD and associated can sell a few more from it. I am generally very pleased about all this. Its nice to see Dredd taken seriously, instead of as a farcical joke.

If Dredd went to arrest Joker for murder, and it was the first time he'd been arrested, it would go one of two ways:

If Joker escapes and commits another serious crime, the chances of him being shot out of hand escalate rapidly.

No Judge will straight-up execute a surrendering crim on the spot without full knowledge of the case. If the surrendering perp is judged to be too dangerous to live, then yeash, the Judge will execute them in a heartbeat.

new-ish JD reader here, what are some good Dark Judges stories? I've read Judgment on Gotham as well as the very first appearance of Judge Death, but are there any story arcs where the other judges get fleshed out? I love Judge Fear's design especially but he doesn't really say much.

There's "Four Dark Judges", from Anderson's series. Then "Death's Dark Dimension", "Necropolis", and then a few Death solo stories that expand on his and the Dark Judges' backstory, especially "Young Death". They're... oddities. They have splotches of black humor and jokes that some fans think ruined the character, making him more funny than creepy. The Four Dark Judges (really called Revenge, but no-one calls it that anymore) - 1st Four Dark Judges, FUCKING AWESOME

Necropolis - This is a mega-epic, ie it has about 50 parts, starts slow then goes full-on total carnage.

The Four in total don't really appear as the main event in another story, though they crop up here and there. There are many more stories that focus on Judge Death tho.

Gets in the way of The Law. However, some other Mega Cities are more lenient in that aspect, letting judges have extrajudicial liaisons and whatnot. Also the undercover judges, commonly known as the "Wally Squad", are allowed families and lovers as part of their covers.
