Let's go back to an angsty, embarrassing time.
god, i'm 13 again
Monitoring...
Ahhh, JTHM. It was actually the first comic I ever seriously read at the tender age of 13 and was what made me start loving them, oddly enough.Damn this art style is so much uglier than I remember it being.
Yeah, I still like this. Undoubtedly the appeal is lessened with multiple viewings since a lot of the humor is just non sequitur nonsense but I've always liked Jhonen's art and there are some genuinely good jokes about mixed with some situations I still consider pretty interesting.
>>37221326The art gets cleaned up and sleeker in the later issues.
How many images is a thread limited to? Planning to dump every Johnny comic tonight.
By the all-seeing Eye of Agamotto, the dread powers of Dormammu, and the beards of the Vishanti, I, Doctor Strange, command you continue this thread at all costs.
Fun fact, some of the entries say Diary, some say Die-Ary. Even a later one says Diary.
Aw, man. I remember reading this when I was 13. Kinda want to dig my copies out from under my bed... It's thanks to Vasquez's stuff that I got into comics at all, I had up to that point assumed all comics were either newspaper or superhero
Here is issue #2 of 7. This one has the favorite "somebody put shit in my pants" Meanwhile.
I bought every issue of this from Hot Topic when I was a teenager.
>>37222366This fucking story. Basically the funniest thing I had ever seen at the time.
The only good part of this series was when Johnny went to hell and realized that he was just as much of a piece of shit as the people he killed and thus deserved to be there.
>>37222410I think the Meanwhiles are pretty good, but I hate Wobbly Headed Bob. Happy Noodle Boy used to be cool but I got over 'random' humor eventually. My favorite issue is #6 where he goes to Heaven and Hell, but because it's explained why Johnny probably went insane
>Endless paragraphs of condescending, ironic metaphors on degradation of human society>Small jokeThe Vasquez Formula.
You know, Jhonen reminds me of Dave Chapelle. Both were artists who would make fun of their topic, but the people who loved it the most were the ones he was making fun of.
>>37222410Yeah one of the things i like is that Johnny is never made to be a "cool guy", and gets told pretty often, like in the previous issue.
Ah man, I forgot how annoying reading this text was. I do however not remember it being this wordy, holy shit.
I love you OP. Not reading because i could probably quote this whole thing in my sleep, but damn if this isn't one of my all time favorites. It's scary how formative this was on my young mind. I tried so hard to draw like him, to the point where I can still see shadows of Jhonen's influence in my work today. I don't know if this would stand up to the test of time without the nostalgia glasses, but dammit I just can't bear to take them off.
A brief intermission, here is some of Jhonens latest work. I will resume #3 in a few minutes.
>>37223028Man, that art style evolution. I'm glad Jhonen suffers from "I hate my old drawings" syndrome as well. It's even funnier how much he hates people getting Tattoos of Johnny.
>>37223028Fuck me, not resume. I will post #3*Here you go.
I understand Jhonen wants to become more of a comic writer than an artist. I gotta say, I'll miss his style. It's like if Burton never lost his cajones.
The font he uses for this comic is Ebola. He writes in Ebola text, but doesn't write the e's backwards like the actual font.
This is the comic he described as "Pure violent, bloody fun comic I wanted to do"Later ones have more story and less violence. Look for the panel in the toilet where it says "Somebody put shit in my pants" on the wall
>>37223375this page speaks so much.
I also have head explody.
Something I really love about JTHM is how Jhonen rubs it in the faces of everyone who emulates or admires Johnny. He's not a tragic soul, he's just a self-abosrbed asshole.
Comic #4. This one is really wordy. I can use it to build up captchas for later comics.
>>37223983>I made cookies, once, and didn't use an oven mitt to remove them. I burned my hand quite severely, but I did not cry.One of things I loved when I was first reading these was to look for the little extra things he'd sneak into the post office/copyright boxes.
There are some really great moments through the series. i really hated having to go to hot topic to buy it
Don't forget, these took place in the 90s. You draw what you know, and he knew 90s goth culture. This was about a decade too late when available at Hot Topic.
>>37224079I feel like Jhonen is talking about himself in the top 3 panels, where the rabbit head is saying how good he used to be but now he draws a goddamned stick figure.
>>37224143This is a good reaction panel.
>>37224376I love when this gets addressed again in a later story.
The cheesyness of Nny's opinions, the sheer volume of deaths, the misconceptions on mental problems, the jabs at religion, the brushes of payback mentality. These things make me cringe. This fucking comic…I should make my own and stop bitching, if it's so bad.No, seriously. I'll make a comic, just out of how fucking annoying this one is. And it'll be good.
Sorry, the last time i read this comic was when I thought it would get me laid.
>>37224715>thinking comics get people laidYou didn't buy it for someone did you? You just read it to think she would be in you, right? Fuck you bought it for someone, huh?
Really? Nobody knows the image cap? I'd like to know if I'll have to make a new topic sooner or later. Here comes Comic #5.This is the one where Johnny is the least prevalent, it's about the people he captured and the only dude gets mauled for being a guy.We can see Jhonen wants to get laid.
>>37224852I think it's 250 or 300 now.
>>37224866Oh neat. I can fit all these in a single topic. Thanks
It's not a moose. NIH is Nine Inch Heels. The monster in the wall is the manifestation of human hate and ...other shit. Read Comic 6.
This comic isn't good, OP.We're all ashamed we ever liked it. In fact, the creator itself is probably ashamed of it in retrospective.I mean, look at this:>>37224557Any of you ever been to therapy and had a breakthrough in your way of thinking? This is all that screaming and bickering over menial shit that you do before you leave a certain issue behind. This is the perspective of someone right before they grow up and realize "Holy shit, was I really this fucking retarded?".This is the comic in a nutshell.Jhonen's lulrandom was great. This is fucking awkward and bitter.
>>37225006He realizes what he created. Later on, he made a TV cartoon that was less bad and violent and for kids. He still hates the majority of his fanbase. And isn't that what /co/ is all about? Hating what you created even though It's popular as fuck?
>>37225006You're not /co/ as a whole, brah. But we get it, you don't like it.
>>37225057This is something I never understood about Jhonen. Why does he hold such contempt over his fans if he's given them literally nothing of intellectual worth to work their minds on?I saw this video where he's at a conference regarding Invader Zim, and he goes and asks the audience not to make stupid questions, and I just find that odd.His show is stupid. There's some scanty social criticism, but it's fucking stupid none-the-less.And it's aimed at 10-15 year olds. What does he really expect from his audience, considering the stupid shit he's done?I enjoy his work, I really do. But he's a big douche.
>>37221800>scumbyI chuckled at that, and I don't know why
Oh fuck me. Too drunk to continue. Comic 6 (more than you've damn read in one sitting, so deep) tomorrow.
>>37225494Dammit, dude.
>>37225415Oh god, this page. I used to scribble that quote EVERYWHERE because my teenage brain just thought it was soooo deep. I even drew the page itself and stuck it on my binder.
looks like invader zim
Jhonen Vasquez wanted to be an artist. Or, rather, he wanted to create art.He wanted to create things to stir men's souls. Like Goya, he wanted to take his nightmares and comb through them to find the kernel of beauty within and share it with the world. But, at least as he saw it, there's no place left in the world for such things. No welcome in culture for art like the masters of old. Not enough talent within him to break through and make them see anyway. So, after much kicking and wailing and ranting and howling protests about how unfair it all was, he gave up. Dropped his dream and made a living like everyone else. He's largely over it now. But if you squint, at his comics and writing, you can still see something in him screaming in dismay.'sright, bitches. Jhonen Vasquez gots straight up Tortured Artist cred.
>>37226245Too bad she's still an angsty hack who can't see past her own rage at her lack of talent to make anything worthwhile.
What in gods name made nickelodian want to give this guy a show? HEY THIS GUY MAKES SOME PRETTY COOL COMICS ABOUT MURDERING PEOPLE, HE SHOULD MAKE A KIDS CARTOON!
>>37226337They saw Squee and figured Jhonen could do a darkly comic turn on growing up. He understood kids' problems well and adapted that into humor for adults, they just wanted him to do the same aimed at kids.He gave them Zim instead.
