It was awesome.

Like, who was the brave, bat-shit insane soul or souls that proclaimed way back in the 60s or something, "You know what? I'm going to dress as that character from blank, and its going to be fantastic!" Then meticulously spent the time and energy into this thing that no one had heard of before at the expense of being ridiculed, went to whatever convention and managed pull it off well enough to create imitators for decades to come.

I don't have any pics, but I do have the best goddamn cosplay story ever.

We're sharing the convention hall with a bunch of marines. Don't ask me, I don't know why there's servicemen sharing space with the anime con. Anyway, they're trying our best to ignore us, but the cosplayers are getting a lot of looks like 'this is freedom? this is what we fought for?' It sorta came to a head, as far as I saw, when the lines for something they were doing were across from the line for the cosplay ball. I swore, there was about to be a punch or a slap-fight or something, when this guy doing Guile from Street Fighter walks up. and I mean, this guy WAS guile. He had the hair, he had the build, everything. He walks up past the line of marines, and they salute him. One even went as far as "Seargent Guile, SIR!"

The guy, who's suddenly KING OF ALL NERDS EVERYWHERE, snaps off a perfect miltary salute back and says "At Ease!" before heading to the back of the line.

I wish I hadn't used up all the shots on my crappy disposable camera, because that was amazing.

I have/had the same problem when I used to do stuff like this. One of my friends went as Pops Racer, another as Kingpin. I was always partial to things like robes and such, and kept going as a white mage from FF.

Basically, don't try to be a very specific character that isn't your specific build, go for a character that is recognizable but generic enough to fit how you make up your costume. Again, case in point.
