"CBR is reporting the tragic news that creator Dwayne McDuffie has died of unknown causes. In addition to co-creating the Milestone Universe–and its signature character, Static — McDuffie had a long career as writer, editor and producer, story editing the popular Justice League of America cartoon and most recently writing the All-Star Superman movie."

He will not only be remembered as the extremely gifted writer whose scripts have been realized as comic books, in television shows and on the silver screen, but as the creator or co-creator of so many of the much-loved Milestone characters, including Static Shock. If he's the one who wrote the last superman animated movie, the one where superman 'died' from overexposure to the sun...that was the worst piece of fiction I've seen in years.

The plot was all over the place, and no individual component was successfully introduced, performed, or resolved. Every single detail was horrible. I caught myself saying 'this is the worst writing I've ever seen,' out loud, about five different times.

It's fine to feel bad about a human being dying. No one wants to die, or think about dying. But don't betray the truth by saying his writing was anything other than terrible.

Dwayne didn’t settle well with DC Comics. A promised extended run on Justice League Of America was cut short. Dwayne had written at length on the DC boards answering questions over the creative procedure of a franchise book and answering them honestly and self critically, still an insightful and wise guide to the process. When I collected them into a post on CBR’s Lying In The Gutters, Dwayne was summarily fired, an act I felt incredibly guilty about, something Dwayne refused to let me be. And that next month it would have been over the colour of Dwayne’s tie

When I was like 12 or so, I really loved the Marvel comic Damage Inc. Which some of you might remember is about the people that have to clean up all of the damage and destruction in New York after the superheroes fight. I just recently learned that was one of his earlier Marvel comics. So I have been following his career to some degree almost the entire time I have been reading comics.

And quite recently a friend of mine who is trying to get into animation writing came across Dwayne McDuffie's e-mail address and wrote to him out of the blue asking for tips or pointers or anything, and the man wrote back almost immediately with some advice and attached a bunch of his JLA/U scripts and outlines as samples for my friend to look at. They don't come like that very often in the business.

In an interview just two days before he passed away he was asked what character he'd like to write, he mentions how he's been lucky to been able to write every character he's ever wanted to but did mention he would like to write Doctor Who since he was a big fan. At least he got to write every character he ever wanted to and I don't think he would have ever written The Doctor anyway.

I definitely knew something was quality if Dwayne Mcduffies name was attached, so its a big loss for the comic and animation industry. The news also hit me more than normal since its eerie that I was watching interviews shot two days before his death not to mention I wiki'd static yesterday.

I think the saddest thing about this is the fact that he was never mentioned on /co/ before he died.

Why is there so much racism in /co/, especially after the loss of someone in comics and animation? The people badmouthing him need to take a long hard look in the mirror.

He just wasn't talked about as much because well alot of his work in recent years have been behind the scenes working on the cartoons, and not as much on the comics.

As for the racism in /co/ this is mostly a newish thing thats popped up in the past year or two, at least when I first got on /co/ when some idiot made a racist remark he was bashed by everyone but I guess as 4chan has grown in popularity so have stupid useers that think every board is /b/ or that its acceptable to say stupid shit in all of 4chan not just /b/. He'd been doing that for over a year with no problems.

It wasn't until /co/ (yes, THIS /co/) went through all his forum posts and compiled all the "this is how DC is fucking McDuffie over" posts, putting them all together that things went wrong. Some idiot /co/mrade took that list of things and started posting it on message boards, then it made its way to blogs, then to that moron Rich Johnson.

Originally McDuffie said one or two bad things every once in a blue moon, and sprinkled those comments with a lot of "but I understand why" and "that's just how the industry works". When you read all of them in one sitting, and without the nice comments, it painted a very different picture. A "fire my ass" picture.

/co/ got him fired, in other words. Or at least played a major role in him being fired.

Static Shock was my favorite cartoon growing up. I grew up as the only black kid in a fairly rich neighborhood that was otherwise all-white, and I always felt kind of isolated. I was never really part of the group, I was always "the black kid." But the friendship between Virgil and Richie was so genuine on that show, and neither of them cared that they were different colors.

It was awesome, and it made me feel less alone. Maybe that's kind of silly, but fuck it. Dwayne McDuffie was a hero.

Oh, and by the way, I'm also a brony. A lot of us loved his work, as we're all comic and cartoon fans when you get down to it.

Honestly? While his Static run was good, I think his Icon run was better. Hardware was another solid Milestone book. And while someone else handled the duties for writing Shadow Cabinet, it was his creation, and a damn good one too. So yeah, the Milestone books were fucking good for the most part.

His best work was Damage Control though, IMHO. Very very very fun book. "Who cleans up the mess after the superpeople fight?"

There was a scene in the old Damage Control series where someone from Damage Control went up to Dr. Doom at his embassy or something, because Doom hadn't filled out all the correct paperwork.

The guy's coworker freaks out and starts going "dude, that's DR. DOOM. JUST LET IT GO."

And Doom basically goes "No! Your comrade is right! Doom will do the necessary paperwork. THERE MUST BE ORDER!"

So, I planned the Amazo rematch as a B-plot in another story, unfortunately, that story had to be dropped because of something else that was planned in another title. So I pushed up the Vixen arc to take that place, but as I was writing it, I found out certain things about Final Crisis that forced me to cut the Vixen Arc short. Things happen. Whether I find a particular character interesting is entirely, and unsurprisingly, a function of what I find interesting, Some characters work better for me in a solo setting than a team setting, for instance, some characters aren't as interesting with this line-up than they would be with a slightly different one. That said, my tendency is to work with the characters I'm less interested in (Red Tornado, Hawkgirl, Red Arrow) more, in order to give them some face time. Batman and Superman don't need a showcase, they're in 6 other books a month, and I've written cool bits for them myself dozens of times, so they'll step to the background, except for a couple of times a year.

When this version of JLA launched, it was in a continuity bubble that left it free and clear of the continuity in other titles. As soon as it synched back up with the rest of the universe, we had to pay the tab for that freedom.

Looking ahead, the line-wide continuity is going to eventually line up for a more traditional JLA, but we're not there yet. At the moment, none of the big seven are available. Beyond that, The Hawks, Green Arrow, both Atoms, Captain Marvel and almost everyone I think of as either a big gun, or a traditional JLA favorite are likewise not available. So as we wait for things to settle down in the other titles, I'm doing "Cap's Kooky Quartet." Of course, in this case Captain America isn't available, either.

Kendra would have stayed with the team, but been without a romantic partner for a while. Most of the League, friends with Roy since he was a teen, would resent Kendra for staying on when she was the one who hurt their friend. She was going to be pretty much a loner except for her relationship with Wonder Woman (which would eventually be good, although Kendra would misread her for a while, causing friction until Diana helped her through some tough times), and Black Lightning, who would treat her like a surrogate daughter (I'd also planned to have her go to Jeff's for Thanksgiving, and meet the rest of his family). Kendra was going to come out of all this with a new focus, and a slightly adjusted status quo that would keep her front and center in JLA. Roy and Kendra would reconcile in about two years, but never be a couple again, except for one night that they'd both be sorry for, and never mention again.

But continuity changed in other books (i was informed that Kendra would die in Final Crisis), so I had to toss it all. Actually twice, because my back up plan was derailed by Kendra's recent undeath.

So the team was set before I got the gig, when I came on, I was told to add John Stewart to the rotation (in preparation for Hal leaving to get his own JLA title - which still hasn't quite happened, leaving several of my subplots idling for almost two years). Likewise Firestorm was set up to be added to the team months before I had the job (coincidentally, I wrote the last three issues of Firestorm's monthly comic. I was told to demonstrate his power-levels, as he was about to join the JLA, this was months before I was even being considered for the JLA job). Eddie Berganza told me that Ed Benes wanted Zatanna on the team and I heard about Dr. Light joining from a fan who heard it from Dan Didio before Dan or Eddie had mentioned it to me.

These are the only changes to the roster since issue 12.

There are a large number of changes coming up, mostly due to members leaving in the aftermath of Final Crisis. Again, I had little to no influence on how the team is shaking out. Dan and Eddie are allowing me to frequently guest star several characters who by rights should be written out of the book because of what's going on in their titles. They also acquiesced to my request for a member rejoining the team (as soon as another project is done with him in about eight months). That character will be my first addition to the team, roughly two years after taking over the book.

If it were up to me, JLA would be made up of roughly the six most popular DC characters plus a rotating seventh spot that would be used to balance the personalities, create new story opportunities and/or pump up an interesting, but so far less commercially successful character.

To that I would add a guest member on a per-arc basis, (although I'd rotate out one or two of my regulars most issues as "busy on another case," just to make room).

So ideally I'd have 9 or 10 members total, but I'd usually only use 7 or 8, plus frequent, story-dependent guest stars.

And I'd also get to use cream of the crop villains, as long as I'm fantasizing.

But instead I've got who I've got, so I'm choosing to tell a story about the organization for a few months, until some of the guys I want are available again.

Now there are several big event crossovers a year, and those titles are where the huge stories happen. So I have to tell stories that feed into and come out of those events. I'd prefer if, as on Justice League Unlimited, I could tell stories that were at the center of the characters lives, but that was a very different circumstance. JLA the comic is part of a larger patchwork, and my mandate is to support the bigger story of the DCU.

I think we could do a much better job of making the comic feel more self-contained while still serving the needs of the DCU, and I'm working on ways to do that, but the truth of the matter is, every three or four months, I have to sort of drop everything and deal with a crossover or other event. In my next arc of 6 issues, there are three of these events (four if you count the Milestone guest shot). That makes JLA integral to the DCU, but it also makes us lurch around more than a bit.

Yeah, and he was right. Here's the problem though, when you take a bunch of answers completely out of context in an attempt to cast a negative light on a selective group of people, you get what we call a bias. McDuffie wasn't smack talking DC, he was just being honest. And like any place of employment, he had nice things to say and bad things to say.

When DC saw Johnston's bias piece, they only saw that McDuffie was talking shit on their own forums. This is not tolerated by anyone. McDuffie didn't blame Johnston for getting fired, but he should have.

But they didn't. The read the piece at face value, wrote Dwayne off as just some disgruntled ass badmouthing them in some long rant, and fired him.

If D.C. wanted to, it would have been a completely simple and easy matter to go and find all this information in its context. And if they still wanted him gone after, well then it would have been no one's fault but Dwayne's as they would have been reading his exact words in the proper context and setting, which is something Dwayne had to consider long and hard every time he posted something.

im just going to copy/paste my thoughts I had from my twitter:

you know... Celebrity and industry death's don't really get to me, but Mr. McDuffie's Death was one that hit me hard. I missed the boat when it came to Milestone comics, but I understand the importance of the print. I was more of a fan of his for his TV work, he worked on alot of the DC adaptations like JLU, Static Shock, his more Recently some of the DTV DC animated movies and his name is practically all over Ben 10, a show I really liked and still do suprisngly despite changes over the years.

I've crossed paths with him many times at comic-con and he's one of the most friendly and most personable people in the industry, he's living proof that you can be your own man in your own and still make time to take a minute to give thanks and talk to someone that got you where you are in the world. If you ever got a moment: Go watch one of his shows, buy a Milestone trade, just do something to support. he's a man that deserves all the respect and love from this world. And reflecting upon things now: an inspiration of mine. not just in his writing, but in the way to present yourself and to give back to the community that enjoys your work.

For a g-rated Saturday Morning cartoon, I found Static Shock surprisingly enjoyable. The crazy cameos and team-ups (cheesy celebrities included) made me enjoy it. It was a goofy but decent enough vehicle to get me familiar with the McD writing and sense of humor.

Of course, JLU would then turn out to be everything I liked magnified tenfold, but SS still holds a place in my heart as a sort of gateway drug.

McDuffie had already caused a shitstorm on the net prior to him saying how DC was screwing him over, in terms of calling anyone who criticized Jon Stewart being on the book as racists.

McDuffie didn't help his cause since he has always seen John Stewart as his personal Mary Sue and flat-out condemned ANYONE of not loving the character like he did of being racists. Not to mention his own failures as a writer to work that into the plot (IE God forbid he give John Stewart the arc of being the unwanted GL and ACKNOWLEDGE how the rest of the team would have preferred John being exiled into space and Kyle or Guy returned to the team as Hal's replacement, what with the fact that John caused billions to die in the Cosmic Odessy debacle).

The leaking of the notes was just their excuse to get rid of a writer who was giving the book the WRONG type of publicity and who didn't know how to deal with fans who were rightfully pissed off that Hal was being removed from the team like he was. McDuffie thought he could play the race card and one and it blew up in his face BIG TIME.......

You can blame D.C. for not checking the context, you can blame Dwayne for putting such writings out there to being with, but you can't blame Rich and or /co/. That's the only point I was trying to make.

Whether anything you just said or not is true I have no knowledge of.

Mosaic was, in large, retconned out of existence by Zero Hour. Plenty of ground for exploration as far as the JLA holding the events of CO against John.

    >>23734506

And my point: McDuffie had basically created a nightmare of bad publicity for the book, to the point that DC forced him to bring back Hal Jordan when the shit hit the fan like it did about 4-5 issues into his run. And he refused to back down upon the issue, as far as continuing to call his critics racist.

The debacle with McDuffie spilling the beans on the executive meddling probably wouldn't have cost him his job, if McDuffie hadn't pissed off half of the comic's readership with his "John Stewart" crap and created a toxic tone around the book. The Johnston debacle was just an easy out DC used to get rid of a problematic writer who was more trouble than he was worth and who had a history of playing the race card.

If that's the case, it would have looked better for them to fire him under the pretense of "we just didn't like what he was doing with books" rather than to use the excuse "Well he was badmouthing us."

He'd be talking about his various feelings for a long time by that point, on their forums, they never had any problem with it before, and the stuff of his the article printed out of context wasn't incredibly bad, and in context it was down right trivial.

Firing him after the article for the "badmouthing" reason just makes it look like DC didn't even take the time to do the research and look into the context of his statements. Which in turn makes them look stupid, which is much worse than if they had just gave a vague answer about "creative differences" or something.

    Christopher Priest on Dwayne McDuffie:
"Dwayne McDuffie is the smartest human being to ever live on this planet. Denys and I were Tuckerizing him somewhat in STEEL. If you want to know Dwayne, read STEEL #34-45 or so. At least, that's my interpretation of him. I swear Denys was drawing him. I called Denys and said, "Hey— are you drawing Dwayne?!" Denys, "No. Don't be ridiculous." Then I'm sure he got off the phone and proceeded to draw Dwayne.

Dwayne is one of the only intellectuals I've ever met that I can win an argument with. Most people, certainly most intellectuals, have a serious ego problem that prohibits their saying the words, "Ok, you're right." But, if you present a reasonable argument and empirical evidence, you can win an argument with Dwayne. That taught me a lot: Dwayne taught me it was okay to be wrong. Being wrong doesn't make you a failure or a loser. It costs Dwayne nothing, absolutely nothing, to say, "Ok, you're right," and that amazed me.

Dwayne also taught me it was okay to have an ego. Good Christian teaching has taught me the virtue of modesty. Dwayne is quick to compliment others while not really patting his own back much. I once said something like, "You don't seem to have much of an ego," and he said something to me that changed my life, something to the effect of: "Jim, my ego is so huge that, if I let it get out of control, nobody would talk to me. I know what I can do, I know what I'm not good at, I don't look for or need compliments, I don't need validation." And, from that day forward, neither did I."

    From Warren Ellis' blog.

I just heard reports that writer & producer Dwayne McDuffie is dead.

We talked – and occasionally argued – for years, at my message board. I had huge respect for both him and his work. Later, he was good enough to hire me to write a JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED cartoon for him. I had a terrific time doing that: turned out he was great to work with, too. if you had to pick out ten people in this poxy business whom you’d stand in front of when the shit started flying, Dwayne would be on most people’s lists.

I can’t wrap my mind around the notion that he’s not here anymore, to be honest.

I think this is what pisses me off about DC Comics killing off every minority character they have and replacing them with white ones. The world today is more multicultural than it has ever been and the DC world should reflect this, instead of ignoring it.

He has done more than what you'll do in your mom's basement that's for sure.

It's very pathetic and childish to make fun of someone's death, but it just shows how sad that person's life is. So when you commit suicide from being a failure in life, no one will even remember you. So it really doesn't matter what you say, you never did anything in your life successful nor will ever be a real man, just a miserable and sad little child that doesn't want to connect with the real world.

All the racism I've seen surrounding this matter is sickening.

Most importantly, Dwayne McDuffie was committed to equality and quality of storytelling. NOT advancing some black agenda, like I'm seeing implied here. He showed that representation of genders and races could be balanced, without disrupting the excellence in storytelling.

There's an important distinction there that a lot of idiots are missing/distorting.

Yeah, DC's current mentality regarding their non-white characters is what keeping me from reading their books. Well, that and other things... As a Mexican, it's disheartening how little superheroes reflect my race. El Tigre and Jamie as the Blue Beetle are the few Hispanic heroes I can think off. And with all the ruckus over Generation Lost, I'll probably end up with one less to count on.

I've been marathoning Spider-Man cartoons for a couple of days, and I think once I'm done, I'll finally go and watch all of Static Shock. Along with Zeta Project, it's the last bit of DCAU that I haven't seen yet.

Probably need to look up Damage Control too. I'm not sure if I've ever heard of it before, but its premise sounds interesting. I always cringe when superhero fight scenes cause a lot of collateral damage, and it's pretty cool if there's actually a comic focusing on that.

I appreciate this sticky for informing me about a great loss in the industry - a loss I would have honestly overlooked or not heard about.

The man was a storyteller. Some stories were worse than others, but some were truly amazing. And for that, I thank him, wish his family the best, and go on with life after a moment's silence.

But honestly, this thread has imploded. To all readers, report, or at the very least, ignore the trolls. For the time being, we are all saddened by the loss of an artist, but they'll always have to deal with themselves.

McDuffie deserves credit for one thing with regards to Green Lantern: He single handedly united the warring factions of Kyle and Hal fanboys against a common enemy: obnoxious John Stewart fanboys who say nothing about white heroes being killed off in order to be replaced with minorities, but who hypocritically raise a stink when said minority heroes are killed off due to their own failures to catch on with fans.

John Stewart was most likely his favorite Green Lantern, just like Hall Jordan is obviously Geoff Johns'. Every writer has those pet characters that they love to play with, and that is every bit their right as creators. You can in no way hold him responsible for whatever you perceive other random fans of said characters to be like.

    Yes theirs Black Irish.
    1) Some African Arabs, and just African Traders made it up as far north as Ireland and England, reports of few that stayed there.
    2) They where some Irish Slave Owners
    3) When The Potato Famine hit Ireland in the late 1800's and the influx of Irish in the Earl 1900's many Protestant White Americans didn't see the Irish as white, sometimes not even human. So They where often outcasts.

Alot of White on White Racism back then.
With hate for their red hair, freckles, Catholic names, and flowing the Pope. Some Irish felt unity with the African Americans and had less stigma of intermingling.

I think I will devote my weekend to my McDuffie trades.

Icon, Hardware, Static, and Milestone Forever. Anyone with me?

In the short term I'll probably just read as much 'classic' Static as I can and Damage Control, because my job is tiring as fuck and my attention span is deplorable.

About half a year ago, did someone else die related to the old Milestone stuff? So much of this feels like deja vu. I remember posting a bunch of Static and Icon comics on /co/ because something had gone down.

Yeah, I've been working my way through the Milestone universe the last two days. Read McDuffie's LotDK arc the other day. Watched a few JLU episodes.

I like how they always talk about McDuffie and Static, but that was one of the Milestone titles he actually had the least amount of influence on. I mean, he edited the entire line and IIRC he WAS the one who came up with the initial idea for the character, but when I think Static I think of Washington III and Busiek.

McDuffie makes me think of Icon and Hardware. And even though they don't have the same name recognition as Static, and you know they're just going to fade into the background of the DCU, they were the best written titles Milestone had.

Yeah, but then he had a lot to do with the Static cartoon. And if these threads over these last few days have told me anything, it was his pet peeve when even professionals called Static "Static Shock". He still cared about the character.
