I liked Toonami back in the day. And Adult Swim had some good shows too (fuck inuyasha though, that was worse than naruto and so was the fanbase). The only anime I've watched since then is Gurren Lagann which was pretty good as well. I steer way clear of /a/ shit though, from what I've seen modern anime is terrible. Its all fanservice and little girls shows about NOTHING. Not the good seinfeld nothing either, like eating cake and being cute nothing. I dont know much about anime though so maybe I'm not giving it a proper chance, but I dont plan on doing so.

There's your first problem. It's Osamu Tezuka. I personally love BlackJack. If you can find the OAVs or the movie it's a more realistic medical drama. The original comics and the newer tv series (which copies the comics plotlines) is more kid friendly and magical.

Dororo is pretty good and if you can find MW that's a really mature graphic novel.

Tezuka had some balls to publish a comic about chemical weapons, political intrigue, and gay sex in 1976. (this is MW btw)

I haven't read 20th century boys, but Pluto is really great. It's Urasawa's take on the Pluto arc in Astro Boy. However, it's done completely from the point of view of a robot detective. If you like robot drama (think Blade Runner for example) it's definitely worth a read.

Unless you can read Japanese, I don't think you can accurately compare the writing styles of the two. The writing style you read in translated manga is up to the translator, since a lot of stuff has to be paraphrased or rearranged to make sense in English anyway.

I like manga better cause everything feels so much more involved and emotional, yeah comics have color but they lack the simple subtle things manga can expound on. I also hate the photo realistic style that most comics have, I mean it's hard to tell one comic artist from another.

Also, it should be mentioned that Japanese simply does not translate very well in English. If you read a manga with a well written translation, it's probably not very accurate to the original writing. This isn't because Japanese is a "bad" language for writing, it's just very, very different in its aesthetic. Writing style is a form of art, like poetry, and like poetry it gets lost in translation.

Anime is in the same trap that Japanese video games are in. Nobody dares to try anything new, and the whole genre is stagnating.
