I THOUGHT THAT LIFE WAS ONE LONG STRUGGLE
IT LOOKS LIKE I WAS RIGHT
I KNOW I’LL NEVER WIN THIS WAR, BUT

I live in Cleveland, and I actually went to Harvey's house last summer to have him both autograph my DVD copy of "American Splendor" and my own copy of "American Splendor" #1, which I paid $25 for at a local comic book shop. I was able to go there through my friend, as well as Harvey's close friend, Toby Radloff, who is portrayed by Judah Friedlander in the film version of "American Splendor". Harvey just let me and my father, two complete strangers, into his house without any question at all. It's a memory we'll never forget. He was very kind, and was very open to all of my questions I asked him. He told me he felt he was the reason why Paul Giamatti became a star after the film came out. Either way, he was certainly an amazing local icon, as well as an international one, and I would hope that maybe Letterman would make mention of his name either on tonight's show or tomorrow's. I certainly hope that Harvey is resting in peace as we speak, because for the first time in my life, I am legitimately saddened by the loss of a celebrity.

Harvey Pekar was a crusty, misanthropic, lonely, bitter, fatalistic and eccentric son-of-a-bitch.

He was also a very real man, a blue collar American icon, and a folk-tale existentialist genius. He was an all-too-human bastard and he was brilliant. I've got tears in my eyes.

/co/ should be ashamed that they are not very familiar with his work. I think Our Cancer Year should be required /co/ reading, if it isn't already.

I don't think it's accurate to say that comics aren't literature. Telling a story with pictures is still telling a story. Comics are literature in the same way that theater and opera are literature. The presence of a second medium in the story doesn't discount the first.

    >Telling a story

This doesn't make something literature. Literature is telling a story via text. Comics are telling a story via text and pictures, or no text at all. Neither is inferior to the other, but they are separate mediums and should be judged as such. It's apples and oranges.

Harvey Pekar was a good friend of Robert Crumb (the grandfather of underground comics. you wouldn't have tits, vulgarity or gratuitous violence without this old perv) and Crumb's noteriety as an underground illustrator who published unedited, censor free works inspired Harvey to write his own comics, the first of which Crumb illustrated himself.

What made Pekar's book American Splendor so prominent was it's blunt, god's-honest autobiographical nature of his own life. Working as a file clerk in a VA hospital in Cleveland his life was mundane, frustrating and full of things to bitch about, most of which he used for material for his comics. I know most of you faggots would think his books to be boring as shit, but it's so rare to see a true glimpse into the life of a real man, to know what true pain and suffering is, and to see life through the eyes of the downtrodden.

Educating these people especially all of /co/ will be hard, I come here because I know a majority of the people here know who they are and how valuable they are to us and a bit for society if your take is on that medium. But here me out and keep this in mind, don't be surprised if all of a sudden after the death of Stan lee, this board or any other site or place in real life will be swarmed by those that magically know who he was, that one person who is a fake, pretentious one. Just the knowing fact that stupid, disgusting sites such as G4, Screwattack and any other of the sort that contain people of this character will just be horrible. As I said, I won't be surprised if this were to happen, and it will be a sad day indeed for those that truly love these people.
I may sound ridiculous at this moment, but that is who I am. I just hope I can meet these men and many others whom I come to respect

Man, groups are made of people. You'll reach some, and not others. That you can't get all of them doesn't mean you need to give up.

Remember, someone thought Pekar was really great and did something that made it possible for you to see it.

My name is Harvey Pekar - that's an unusual name - Harvey Pekar. 1960 was the year I got my first apartment and my first phone book. Now imagine my surprise when I looked up my name and saw that in addition to me, another Harvey Pekar was listed. Now I was listed as "Harvey L. Pekar", my middle name is Lawrence, and he was listed as "Harvey Pekar" therefore his was a - was a pure listing. Then in the '70s, I noticed that a third Harvey Pekar was listed in the phone book, now this filled me with curiousity. How can there be three people with such an unusual name in the world, let alone in one city? Then one day, a person I work with, expressed her sympathy with me, concerning what she thought, was the death of my father, and she pointed out an obituary notice in the newspaper for a man named Harvey Pekar. And one of his sons was named Harvey. And these were the other Harvey Pekar's. And six months later, Harvey Pekar Jr. died. And although I've met neither man, I was filled with sadness, 'what were they like?', I thought, it seemed that our lives had been linked in some indefineable way. But the story does not end there, for two years later, another 'Harvey Pekar' appeared in the phone book. Who are these people? Where do they come from? What do they do? What's in a name? Who is "Harvey Pekar"?

I'll be honest here, /co/. I didn't really read too much of American Splendor. Hell, I never would have known it existed if I hadn't picked up a VHS copy of the movie at a thrift store.

Pekar was a real man. He wrote about real life and the shit he and so many others deal with on a day to day basis.

So yeah, it's not as exciting as all that DC-Marvel Final-Blackest-Night-Crisis fanboy wank-fest you imbeciles drool over every month.

Harvey Pekar wrote about real life, not escapist bullshit written to pander to a demographic of children masquerading as adults.

    Damn that's a stupid statement.

Comics, theater, and opera are comics, theater and opera. Nothing more, and nothing less. They are their own separate entities with their own set of rules. To say they're something else does them a great disservice and devalues the work created therein. When the work is strong enough to stand on its own merits, it doesn't need to be shoehorned into some other field to garner any sort of respect.

I don't pride myself on being well read when it comes to comics so I don't have a problem telling you that my first exposure to Pekar was the movie.

Anyhow, it was actually at a very rough point during my early twenties. Lots of shit I'll mow over, but chiefly on top of the shit pile was the death of my older brother.

I spend a lot of time writing and drawing to make comics. It's a passion of mine, but that dream's been bobbing in some choppy waters. Depression, drinking problem, whatever, right?

Rereading American Splendor encourages me to keep plowing on ahead regardless. You might not ever be famous and you may never leave the town you've been in your whole life...

But, fuck it, you can still fulfill a fucking dream.

... I didn't intend to get all melodramatic and shit.

Too many assholes who think they "Professor
Geek". I have no intention in learning from
these inflated egos. It's one of the many
reasons why noobs such as myself could
give two shitless fucks about exploring the
comic book medium. You ask for help and
get "Just read this and you'll get it" only to
ask later "Why did this happen?" and get
called an idiot. Besides will anyone start a
Road to Pardition thread? No, only so they
can inflate their egos with newest IRON
MAN CRISES CLUSTERFUCK and be trolling.

He largely helped create the whole autobiographical/semiautobiographical genre of comic book, which makes him historically significant. So even if you never cared about his comics directly, he greatly influenced the medium. So that's something.

Also, it WAS a pretty good movie.

Please excuse me if my terms may be off,
but your essentially talking to a noob.

Either you didn't comprehend the entirety of my post
or you are trolling, but fuck it - I'll say both. You have
displayed the attitude that tells guys like me to
to essentially, "FUCK OFF". I said Road to Perdition
because it was the only thing who near zero
knowledge of comics I could pull out of my ass
that isn't Superman, X-men, and would be
well outside the realm of status quo. I
personally would love to read American comics,
but (repeating myself) find the process
    intimidating.

And no, I didn't say you were shit. I said
the attitude is what one of the direct
hamperings for an individual who wants to
    actually explore comics, specifically canon.

What I did not mention was that - yeah -
alternative/Indie comics are a great interest
to me and every time I walk in here I see the
same de facto - Marvel and DC until you guys
here of such and such comic book movie
coming out such as Losers or whiteout and
even then you fuck it up. This sticky is proof
of it, but this problem is beyond just this board.
This problem is in V, too. You want to bring
up cool (and outstanding) game that no one's
heard? Fine, but you're gonna be lucky if
you make it past 10 comments, let alone
five. Anime is the only other board with
problem, but at least they try. I can actually
walk into Anime right now and have great
chance of finding something that resembles
    diamonds in the rough.

I'm sorry, but your post proved my point
    beautifully and effectively.

Uhh...not really. There was nothing ironic or condescending about Harvey Pekar. It wasn't an act. That's the whole point. Plus he was doing this in the 1970s, when it really was a radical departure from Marvel and Mickey Mouse and stuff like that.

That's like calling Crumb a hipster because he wears hats and listens to old jazz records no one has listened to in 70 years.

For some people, being a loser with a dead end job is not an affect to be put on because you can always go back to grad school. Harvey couldn't, he was stuck at the VA.

    published in 1976

I think its safe to say he was either the first hipster to make comics, or someone approximately equal to a hipster who made comics in 1976

again, not a bad thing in this case. American Splendor isn't half bad. Especially considering he made it in Cleveland which would be difficult for anyone.

It's hard to get me mad, but this thread did.

It's okay that a lot of people don't know him, I'm not bad about this. There are plenty levels of knowing comics and cartoons and there is no end, we will never know everything that is coming out, so, despite Harvey being quite famous for an underground writer, I'm ok with this.

What got me mad is the fact that people are messing around, proud of their own lack of culture, mocking a dead man for no apparent reason. I sound like a conservative douche bag for this, because this is an anonymous board and there are no rules on how to react. I'm just dissapointed at /co/, I thought that you would react different.

Reading a few posts from this thread makes me think on how the newfags surpasses the oldfags in number. I would even be ok if they hated Pekar for some reason and mocked him with a solid opinion, but they don't even know him. Some people think he's an artist. Some other people think he is lame to the point of being forgettable ("dunno him, y should i care"). This is not a "dog dies in australia" kind of news, he is not a nobody and he should not be treated as one.

I love his work, I really do. He is sensible and clever, he sees things from a different perspective. And now he is dead. Preety sad, this really got me. Life goes on, I did not knew him personally and I hate this worshipping idols thing, so... That's it.
