Why are there no out LGBT characters in kids' cartoons? Think about how poignant it would've been if McCracken had actually outed Buttercup instead of just dropping hints.

There aren't many sexually active characters in kids cartoons.

Because when you make things directed towards children you make things as simple. The younger the simpler. Heterosexuality is our default because it's how babies are made. As we grow up we discover homo and bisexuality in all its various forms and form our own opinions regarding them. Deciding how they feel about a girl kissing another girl might be too much for a seven year old to handle right away.

It's the same reason that kids cartoons always have "good guy" vs "bad guy" and try to take it light with the gray areas. Adrian Veidt, for example, isn't something you wanna show to someone who hasn't hit puberty yet because that takes a certain level of emotional maturity.

Because of hetero-normality and hetrosexual privilege.

Not to mention the homophobic parents that will go stark raving mad at the channels that show a realistic depiction of GLBT characters, even in cartoons.

Those parents want their children's programing to be escapist, not realistic and escapist.

How many gay 6 year olds do you know. until puberty starts hitting in kids aren't going to be attracted to anyone. They might say they have a girl/boyfriend, but that's just a good friend and them trying to be mature.

If you're normal, no kid is thinking about sex until they're at least 12.

    >>16174605
    Yeahno.

Usually when people say "tomboy," it's shorthand for "girl who plays sports," which Buttercup is.

It doesn't usually mean "girl with a husky voice who plays sports, uses course language, spends her free time punching sides of beef, and attempts to pee standing up."

If those things all fall into your definition of "tomboy," then I guess the middle-aged lesbian carpenters I know are just some real hardcore tomboys.

not 100% true. I was always attracted to girls, it's not common but it can happen. I never felt girls were icky or any of that, I just wanted to touch them places and wondered why my penis got hard sometimes.

Homosexuality in media tends to get very exploitaive, very quickly.

It's too easy to write a character just around being gay and nothing else. People do it already with straight people.

Sexuality should not be explored in most media. It's too easy to fuck it up.

    That was just a flanderization.

Buttercup was always tough and into stereotypically "boy" things but you could still tell that she was supposed to be a girl.

Later seasons turned her into a total butch cunt who beats people up for no reason and abhors anything even remotely feminine.

Stop claiming to know when feelings of sexual attraction start. None of you are child psychologists. Stop it. And stop debating the sexuality of a completely non-sexual fictional character.

Reminds me of last year's Comic-Con.
I went to a "Gays in Comics" panel featuring Greg Rucka, other people, and Terry Moore. Moore I guess wrote a book about a gay superhero and has a website that lists every gay superhero who has ever been wronged.
Only he got pissed at ANY sort of violence against gay characters and considered subtexty heroes like Ice to be LGBT. It didn't help that he took evey opportunity to plug his shitty book.
Naturally, Rucka shut that douche down, and nobody in attendance really talked to him for the rest of the discussion.

Also the redhead from Fred's Head was a lesbian. And the only reason anyone's ever heard of that show.
