I start 3 years of illustration in university in september. I'm working on a comic portfolio in the summer, to send to 2000ADs head office and hopefully comission some work in between my current course and university.

In 3rd year university for game design, really digging 3D animation. Wanted to be a traditional animator as a kid but guidance counselor from highschool told me I'd never amount to anything and animation was for people with talent.

Yet here I am, getting the top marks in my class for the walk cycle I just did, already ahead of the class in facial animation and lip syncing.

When I was younger, just a bad little kid,
My mama noticed funny things I did,
Like shootin' puppies with a B B gun
I'd poison guppies, and when I was done
I'd find a pussycat and bash in its head
    That's when my mama said

    What did she say?

She said, "My boy, I think someday
    You'll find a way
To make your natural tendencies pay

Oh hey, I went to Sheridan.

First year of the animation program is pretty good, second year is amazing, third year has the best chance of making you a suicidal alcoholic, and fourth year you just coast on whatever ambition you have left after you scrape away all the apathy that crusted on. The admins in the school are complete cockmonglers, dealing with them has been the most frustrating experience of my adult life thus far.

Still one of the best in Canada, which is a little disheartening.

But even though I wanna be a dentist, I still like art. I've always wanted to make a webcomic...something made for the sake of telling a story and getting to draw rather than telling a joke a day to get fans to sell merchandise. But college for a medical career makes me have no time for that, so I'll wait until I'm a dentist and only have to work 4 days a week and still make twice as much as the rest of the people in this thread.

The guy was frowning at my stuff the whole time. I got a feeling that he felt I was wasting his time since I was a HS student and the portfolio review was an assignment. Also talked to some other guy to sign my review sheet and he rated me 3/10.

Then it turns out that my other friends in class talked to the Deadpool artist and he actually sat down and talked to them about their weaknesses and shit while my guys just waved me off like I wasn't worth their time. I just feel gypped about choosing the wrong reviewers. I waited in line for the Disney guy with my friends and they gave us 3 minutes tops.

I have met a woman who used to animate for disney way back in the day and did stuff for marvel. My mom is a secretary for a lawyer so I talked to her for a bit and showed her my work. She said I was pretty good and gave me this advice: never let people tell you how to draw and always do what YOU want to do.

Something I've been dicking around with in CS4, it really shouldn't be taking me as long as it is, but I keep shelfing it because I don't feel like fighting CS4 to scratch out a couple frames. Sometimes I start drawing and realize that the program has decided to apply the eraser tool to every layer I have onion-skinned, so I have chunks missing from frames left and right, other times it will keep one frame frozen on top of what I'm trying to work on that won't go away until I quit and restart the program. Other times it decides that if I want to have the bottom layer or two locked (usually the one I keep the roughs that I don't want altered on) it just won't let me onion skin anything at all.

It can't even just be my version of the program, because my roommates have the same legit bought-and-paid-for copies of flash for both Mac and Windows, and they have the same problems.

I don't think you should be discouraged. If art is what you wanna do, then the time limit isn't going to be as important. Getting a job in what you want to do directly out of college is pretty rare, most people just get a smaller job with their degree and work their way up, building a better and better portfolio as they go.

Disney has been known to have bitter underling animators at review stations like that cut down talented people because they don't want the competition. Glen Keane and some other top-tier guys kinda trolled them once to prove the system was broken by putting together a portfolio together, submitting it, and having a laugh after it failed the review process.

I'm finishing an animation degree this year and looking into working independently with a couple of other animators. It's easy to get your stuff seen through the internet and festivals so if you've got good ideas you can get popular pretty easy. The trick is finding some way to make money out of it. It might not work out but we figure it's better to try than just run straight to a big company.
