Anybody else here start to feel morbidly cynical and depressed after watching a studio ghibli film? it seems like nohing can go wrong for these people !
Um....no?
No, but I want to go swimming for some reason.
not grimdark enough for you?
>>14412236heh no, just seriously end up feeling like the worlds shit on me, or something
reporting an animu thread
>>14412249You must live in a shitty eastern european country or possibly Kansas if a happy movie can depress you like that.
Sometimes I like to watch Princess Mononoke and pretend Yakul the red elk is actually the main character. Also I read his inner monologue in the voice of Samuel L Jackson.YAKUL DONT GIVE NO FUCK. YAKUL AINT AFRAID OF NO WOLVES.WHY YOU BE FREAKING OUT ASHITAKA? IT'S JUST A DECAPITATED AND UNSTOPPABLE FOREST GOD.YAKUL GOT SHOT WITH AN ARROW! NOOOOOOOOOOONOT YAKUL!
I hated Nausicaa. She just scolds everyone like a fussy schoolteacher the whole film. Not very humble for someone who killed five men with a hammer like, yesterday,
>>14412282 that is win
>>14412289this movie was a dissapointment
>>14412289heh, not only that but the villagers are practical slaves. No free will, or anything
>>14412282brb. watching Mononoke
>>14412289In the manga she pretty much decides it would be best to wipe out humanity.
>>14412289She killed five men with a hammer BECAUSE THEY KINDA KILLED HER DAD. She was freaking out over just learning HER DAD WAS DEAD.
why did you post a picture of Megaman?
>>14412337>implying that's not the case
>>14412352because megaman is the man
>>14412195No, not really. After watching Ponyo with the family, we went to an aquarium and ate seafood after that. I had a suspicious feeling that we were eating sick/endangered fish from the aquarium since the restaurant was directly next to it...
>>14412363the MEGA man.
>>14412337Oh fucking Christ, Miyazaki, you armchair lefty.>>14412346Fair enough, and I thought that was actually an interesting thing to do with an anti-voilence character, but after that one scene where she cried, it didn't feel as if the experiance had affected her; she just acts holier than everyone.
>>14412397yeah, this one was a bit of a disappointment because it's characters are black-and-white stereotypes
I usually feel confused after watching those movies. Then I go back and watch them a second time andrealize that there is no complicated mystery or somethingunderneath the actual story.
>>14412416and there's that one sequence under the toxic forest where nausicaa just guesses EVERYTHING. I went from okay to -> WTF is this?
Nausicaa is probably the worst Ghibli film. The setting is excellent, but the writing, characterization, and animation are all sub-par.
Watching Ghibli movies dubbed is a war crime and anyone who does should have their ears cut off. Respect the original.
>>14412509ah, it's an early one, give them credit. Take a look at the last unicorn (another ghibli) and you'll see how much better this one is
Miyazaki films are well crafted and beautiful to watch. Too bad they're liberal hippy propaganda.
>>14412509the setting was an incredible post-nuclear nightmare, just wish it was more about survival as opposed to tolmekian BS
I like Ghibli. The endings are always a little too syrupy for me, though.
>>14412526WOAH, HOLD IT! Last Unicorn was Ghibli??
>>14412538A movie doesn't portray Humans as the best thing to ever exists, bullshit libtrash.Who needs that nature shit. We have concrete.
>>14412583the company that went on to make ghibli, yes. there goes your childhood
The manga is really great. Movie is... not one of his best. But fuck that manga just has so much fucking scope, it's awesome.
>>14412583It's not actually Ghibli, all the animators in the end credits are Japanese though.
>>14412590>A movie doesn't portray Humans as the best thing to ever exists, bullshit libtrash.Yes.
>>14412538Which is why Mamoru Oshii is the true best animation director in Japan. Extreme cynicism > hippies.
>>14412610Animators that later on went to work at Ghibli, dumbass.
>>14412611Like all those books pointing out the bad things in America's history, what's up with that shit. Who needs to know that stuff right? History is Bunk.
Love Ghibli, although Howl's Moving Castle is pretty crappy compared to the book. Glad I watched the movie first. Will admit I'm interested to see what they'll do with The Borrower Arrietty.
>>14412195Watch Future Boy Conan.
>>14412599yeah the manga is much better
>>14412640Your history is your own and does not concern me.
>>14412651That was before Miyazaki went nuts though.
>>14412633Yes, but it wasn't actually Ghibli yet.
>>14412646book better than movie? WHAAaaat!!?
>>14412282That's all I'm gonna hear from now on.
>>14412646I liked HMC as a movie, but I hated it as a movie based on a book, if that makes any sense.
Miyazaki is indeed a talented man.But Isao Takahata is the better director out of the two.
>>14412679I know, I knowI'm trying to promote the book.
>>14412674That and his work on Lupin III.Awesome stuff.
>>14412282ha ha, that's awesome!
>>14412514Stuff it weeaboo. Most Ghilbi movies are dubbed with an excellent cast. Are you really gonna tell me to not watched Princess Mononoke dubbed? ARE YOU REALLY GONNA TELL ME TO DISRESPECT NIEL FUCKING GAIMAN?
>>14412715That TOTALLY makes sense, because I feel the exact same way about it. I liked the book so much, I stole it from library. First Edition, fuck yeah. Really I paid for it as if I lost it though. I felt bad.
>>14412632Damn right.
I think it's stuff like the shit at the end of Laputa where they landed on the roots of the big ass tree and the girl exclaims that the tree saved their lives. Shit makes my eyes roll really hard.
>>14412755>Are you really gonna tell me to not watched Princess Mononoke dubbedYes.
>>14412728The first three episodes of the green jacket Lupin series were quite...meh.Then Miyazaki and Takahata took over for the rest of the series and it was fucking awesome.
>>14412784I hope you get kicked in the nuts by anyone who's read Anansi Boys.
>>14412784Honestly? Just knowing Billy Bob Thornton was in it made me "eh"
>>14412798Indeed. And that all culminated into Cagliostro. Definitely one of my most favourite animated films.
>>14412760I love that book so hard. I'm disappointed that more people haven't read Castle in the Air.But yeah, I'm glad I'm not the only person who feels that way. If you just think of HMC as a movie, it's prefectly enjoyable. But if all you think about is "This is based on the book, it's nothing like it AAAAAHHHH" then of course, you're going to be disappointed.Which makes me wonder about the next Ghibli film; I hear it's going to be based on The Borrowers. I haven't read that book, but I kinda want to.
Go back to /a/.Reported.
Didn't Miyazaki sent Spirited Away to Disney so they could dub it, and sent a samurai sword with a note saying "NO CUTS"? I think it was because the previous movie he sent to Disney was edited and had all the violent parts cut out.
>>14412514Are you serious? The Japanese casts are great, but the more recent dubs have been pretty good. Admittedly I didn't like the Castle in the Sky dub that much, but that was partly because of the script. The Spirited Away dub was good and the Ponyo dub was really well done.
>>14412868The original dub of Nausicaa was so severely cut and altered that it was ridiculous.
>>14412514>>14412514WEEABOO
>>14412868No, I'm pretty sure Ghibli's licence with Disney stipulates no edits to the picture. This is because of Warriors of the Wind. This is why Disney will never release Only Yesterday, because there's a scene in which some girls briefly discuss menstruation and Americans are hyper-sensitive.
>>14412862I'm the same way. I love Castle in the Air and House of Many Ways. I too, and curious about the new one. I have read the Borrowers, but mind you it was a LONG time ago, when I was a little little kid. I do remembering it being quite cute though.
One thing I've noticed about most dubs is that the characters who can talk without moving their lips are the characters with the least corny dialogue. They're so obsessed with matching the syllables to the lip motions that they'll do shit like make a character crack a stupid joke in the middle of a crisis situation ebcause the words just happen to fit the animation.
>>14412926Am curious. goddammit. Self correction.
>>14412924I watch american productions with the original audio. Why should I do different for the rest of the world?
>>14412925Which is really a shame, because Only Yesterday is a really good movie.
>>14412925>This is why Disney will never release Only Yesterday, because there's a scene in which some girls briefly discuss menstruation and Americans are hyper-sensitive.Too bad because Only Yesterday is the best Ghibli film.
