    Hey, cooks!
I have a question for you:

I'm someone who keeps a clean fridge, and cleans it fairly regularly. I buy my veggies from a supermarket (Meijer, Kroegers, etc.) and keep them in the individual veggie bags I put them in from store, but make a hole in them. My problem is that while I'm trying really bloody hard to be healthy and stock up on various sorts of veggies in the fridge, within a week or two they will all invariably develop a fungus growth on them. Not meats, not fruits, not the bread, but the vegetables will invariably spoil. How do I fix this?

I just buy enough for maybe a week of cooking. Then I'm usually forced to find ways to finish using anything left.

Don't keep them in the bags. Alton Brown did a Good Eats episode where he showed all sorts of other alternatives that helped keep the veggies longer. Even if you put a hole in the bag, inevitably, too much moisture will be contained and create a good environment for mold to grow.

Sadly, veggies aren't meant to last much longer than a week after being picked and seperated from whatever they were growing on.

I once lived in the boonies of wisconsin and making a trip to the closest super walmart was a big deal! Seriously!

Every time we went, we'd drop over $300 on food and stock up like we were preparing for a war or something. It was rather pathetic.

If you want to eat fresh veggies - which is the very best you deserve - you need to only buy enough for a week's worth of food. Besides onions and taters, which left out of the fridge can last for almost forever, veggies need to be consumed quickly.

You don't have to do an entire huge shopping trip every time you go to the store - you can just quickly run in and grab some veggies and then make for the cashier and be done with it.

I had to learn this lesson after moving to a bigger city. It's ok to go to the store multiple times a month. XD

Because I do shopping based on a bi-weekly paycheck?

As do many of us. You need to budget for weekly (at minimum) trips to the store for produce. Just because you get paid bi-weekly doesn't mean you can't shop weekly. I get a few organic products regularly and they don't last long at all. I just make a 5-7 day menu and shop for that usually.

I have a similar predicament OP and I suggest you buy carrots, onions, potatoes, cauliflower, daikon radish, and cabbage. You can just throw the first four in your crisper drawer but the last two keep best wrapped tightly in foil.
