Can someone please explain light beer to me? They nearly all taste like piss across the board. Is it a calorie thing?

I can drink more of it without feeling as full.

So, it's only for getting drunk on.

This. I drank standard light beers through high school and most of college because I could put down 15 in a night and not be full, and not break my bank.
    >> Anonymous 02/22/12(Wed)22:16 No.3435489
drinking games, flip cup and beer pong. Easier to drink all night long than a porter of IPA. Basically its cheap and gets you buzzed that's all, don't think too hard about it
    >> Anonymous 02/22/12(Wed)22:21 No.3435503
Check the price between light and ”normal” beer and you'll know
    >> Anonymous 02/22/12(Wed)22:33 No.3435528
Bud lights go for more than a 30 pack of Milwaukee's Best and wont get you as drunk and taste equal enough. It being more affordable or for getting shitty drunk are cant be reasons to drink it.
    >> Anonymous 02/22/12(Wed)22:39 No.3435548
Downing a lot of beers to get drunk and not for flavor is rough on the waistline. Light beer is not only more refreshing in quantity, less filling, but less calories. It does add up. I know heavy drinkers who have dropped 30lbs by switching.
    >> Anonymous 02/22/12(Wed)22:42 No.3435556
Why pound a bunch of beers instead of just getting a handle?
    >> Anonymous 02/22/12(Wed)22:44 No.3435563
because some idiots actually do believe that calories=how filling something is.
    >> Anonymous 02/22/12(Wed)22:50 No.3435583
I don't get drunk off light beer. I can drink 12 coronas or coors light and barely feel a buzz but still feel shitty in the morning. They have no redeeming qualities.
    >> Anonymous 02/22/12(Wed)22:53 No.3435597
light beers are for effeminate frat boys who can't handle whiskey like a man.

    >Is it a calorie thing?
Kinda. Light beer is just like taking a standard 5 gallon batch and making it a 7 gallon batch instead. It's just watered down, so there is less barley/hops/etc. in it, therefore lacking in taste. Anything with lower ABV (and hops) will go bad faster and not have much flavor at all. Light beer's don't even make much use at all of specialty malts (which is what mostly gives the beer it's flavor, unless the beers' flavor is focused on the hops). So, yeah, it's just watered down, unexciting, barely alcoholic water. And it's usually only 1-1.5% less ABV, so it's not only a waste of money, but a waste of beer (you have to drink more to get buzzed).

It's not a waste of money, unless you also think that the only reason to get drunk is to consume your alcohol with the least amount of water and filler. Do you drink Everclear only?

    >>3435626
What? It's definitely a waste of money. If you want to save calories you can drink less beer that isn't watered down and get the same effect. He said nothing about being drunk either, just about flavor.

The major beer companies, after prohibition, wielded the government penis to control distributorships.

By using the government to regulate the shit out of beer distribution they were able to keep other beers off the shelves. Regulation has since loosened quite a bit, a lot of small brewers have found success and there's a greater selection.

Over the years learned to like Coors Light. I'd have to say I pretty much like all beer macro to microbrews. I am likely to buy something better. I usually get it when I am having people over. A couple of 30 packs can sustain 10-15 people. Protip: Keystone Light is the bottom liquid drained from the Coors Light brew. It tastes almost exactly the same. Pic is my absolute I want to get drunk on a budget beer.

    Michelob Ultra, 4.2%ABV, 2.6g carbs, 95 cal
    Sam Adams, 4.7%ABV, 18g carb, 160cal
    SA Stout 4.6&ABV, 24g carb, 195cal

Really? It's not different? It's hugely different. Light beer is especially good for carb counters. And as far as buzz, a shot of vodka is equiv to 4% 12oz beer.
    >> Anonymous 02/22/12(Wed)23:27 No.3435663
The thing about people trying to save on calories but still want to drink beer. ... is that the calories in beer come directly from the alcohol. So the only way to make it lighter in calories is to remove the alcohol.

So basically, you have the unique opportunity to drink something that tastes like piss WITHOUT the benefit of getting drunk.

So yes, all light beer tastes terrible.

All beer is going to have residual unfermented sugars contributing to calories

Any beer that finishes with a higher final gravity than light beer is going to have more calories per serving - especially those with highly kilned, less fermentable malts like stouts

    >>3435663
No, that's false, it's not the only way calories are removed. Beer has a lot of sugar dude.

It's a cost thing. For $10 I can get a six pack of excellent pale ale or I can get enough PBR to drown a small horse.

There's also the fact that strong beers are something of an aquired taste so to a large amount of people cheap, flavorless beers actually taste better than strong, full bodied beers while costing less. For all they care it's a win-win.

In most beer, the sugar is nearly completely converted to alcohol in the fermentation to make beer. Unfortunately for dieters, ethanol is very easily converted to energy by our bodies
