produce is good, chips are good, frozen stuff is good, sardines/tuna are good...
    >> Anonymous 08/10/11(Wed)11:00 No.3032549
The smoked salmon is reasonable, it's cheaper than most supermarkets and even tastes slightly better.
    >> Anonymous 08/10/11(Wed)11:01 No.3032551
Also: Oettinger Beer, the only problem is that if you throw a party with that beer your whole room is full of aluminium foil.

Only if it is Aldi Nord. Aldi Süd is for pissant commoners.

    Just normal, about 5%
It's fairly cheap and nothing special, but I would prefer it over Heineken or Amstel any day.

    I fucking love Aldi.

Go for the jarred pasta sauces. Esp, the marinara and alfredo.

"BUT CK?!?! It's so much easier to make my own?"

Yes, but the shit from Aldi is delicious.

personally i have found the entire store to be just plain shit. I would tar Lidl with the same brush too. Just another one of those crappy supermarkets with no name brands made on the cheap in 3rd world countries and then exported for the poor in europe to feed on. I stopped in one once to buy some razors cos i was in bad need of a shgave and i was meeting up with some chick later but an Aldi was the only place i could find open. They only sold razors in packs of 20 and those fucking things were just cheap and blunt as fuck, i swear they took off more skin than they did stubble. While wandering around trying to find the razors i happened to pass the fruit and veg section and i must say it looked fucking disgusting, most of it was either bashed up or covered in mold and didnt look sutibale to feed to pigs.

    Italian living in America here.
I bought a pouched sauce from them before after reading the ingredients list.
    It was pretty good.
Also, I think it changes region to region what fresh stuff is good at Aldi; in this area, the meat, especially the pork, is decent and cheap but the produce is rubbish.
They used to sell a delicious mango-and-chai-spiced granola, but I'm guessing it wasn't popular since they no longer carry it; it was my favourite.
I buy milk, butter and cream, imported cheeses ($6/lb for imported English cheddar; $8/lb for Danish Havarti), pork, dry beans and instant coffee there (the instant coffee is just as good as Nescafé and costs $2.50USD, thereabouts, in comparison to $8USD).
I use the instant coffee to make frapógalo, a Greek-style iced coffee also popular in Italy (under that name or "caffè shakerato" under the false assumption that it originated in the US).
    Pic related; it's frapógalo.

I haven't been to one yet, but the woman behind me in line at Wegmans the other day was telling me how they have great prices for things like paper towels and toilet paper.

Im thinking about picking up an assload of frozen foods when i go tonight.

their tomato sauce is shit compared to hunts. I can get a can of hunts spaghetti sauce that costs 95 cents and tastes good. aldi sauce is a buck and tastes like asshole in comparison

Among cheap-ass German beer, i'd rate Oettinger 2nd best after Astra.
Much better than the plastic-bottled Karlskrone they sell at Aldi Süd in Germany.
If you want cheap beer, you can't go wrong with it, unless you absolutely want something with a really light, watery taste.

I shop at Lidl as part of my regular shop, I'm not sure how many products are that different from at Aldi though, as I've only popped in there occasionally - am I right in thinking they're largely the same?

Three things I get from Lidl in bulk.
    1) Passata, comes in long-life containers, only about 20p
    2) Noodles. There's a chinese brand of instant noodle at Lidl for about 8p a packet and its some of the nicest noodles I've had. They cook really well and blow the expensive noodles out of hte water comparatively.
    3) Grafenwalder beer

Two things I love to get if I can.
    1) The thick Salami sausages in the wax-paper (They're just excellent, taste really good).
    2) Bacon Lardons. Best I've seen from any supermarket, nice bit of fat on them, all fairly similarly sized so they cook consistantly at the same time, no added water, nice and firm and can be lightly fried or charcoaled happily.

European Chocolate - big bar only 30p each. Its the nicest chocolate, 100x better than the british vegetable shit.
    European brand Ice cream.
I always lol at people who buy Carte Dor like its some kind of godsend, I always tell them "Thats a basement value brand in europe, its SHIT over there, its only PR and deceptive marketing which make it seem like its luxury!"
Buy the Eisstern Ice cream if Aldi do it, its incredible.
